Teacher of the Year

It's the time of year when our staff chooses a teacher to represent us in competing for the WCPSS Teacher of the Year.  This year, our staff voted for our amazing Coach, Jeremy Smith.  In spotlighting the great work that Coach Smith does with all our our students, I asked him to reflect upon his teaching here and to write a few words to share with the JGMES community.

"I have been teaching at Jeffreys Grove for 6 years and in Wake County for nine. I did not originally see myself becoming a teacher. I went to a community college for two years and attended a four-year university to study geology. After a year, I decided geology wasn’t for me.Then I switched to nursing. Again, not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I applied some of my nursing classes to an exercise science/teacher certification degree. Since stepping into the teaching world, I’ve loved every year more than the last.

What motivates me every day is the ability to change someone’s mood in a positive way. I love the challenge of building a relationship with each student and helping them become better people. Life has not always been easy but the past couple years have been unbelievable! I have gotten engaged, refereed the ACC Champion twice, NCAA Champion in Kansas City, part of the travel crew for the SEC, and now receiving Teacher Of The Year...crazy!!

The hardships I’ve faced in the past make me the person I am today. I strive to keep working hard and to stay inventive in the future. I love Jeffreys Grove and all the teachers who work much harder than me. I never want to be in the spotlight, but I’m extremely honored to accept this award."

We are all very proud of Coach Smith and feel very fortunate to work alongside him each day!
