    FWES Updates:

    • End of Year Special Events:
      • Virtual Field Day- Friday, May 22nd
      • Spirit Week- dates TBD
      • Working on special events for 5th graders:)
      • And others....
    • School Planning Needs- It is important in our school that our teachers have a leadership role and a voice in decisions. As we complete needs for the end of the year, and need a cross grade level team of teachers for planning, these meetings may impact a live session with your teacher (since each grade level has those times spread out to no conflict with other teams). I appreciate your flexibility if your teacher needs to reschedule or cancel a session and if you have any questions, please let me know!
    • Report Card and Grading Information- WCPSS will be sending information to families this week. At this time, Report Cards are due to be sent home to families via email on Friday, June 5th for review and time to ask questions or schedule a google meet with the teacher if needed before the end of the year.
    • Gathering belongings- WCPSS is working on guidelines for the process schools can use for students and staff to gather belongings from the classrooms. It should be shared with principals this week and then we will work on the FWES process and share with families. This process will likely not occur until at least Phase 2 of the loosening of restrictions- or possibly later- so there is no hurry at this time.
    • Before/After School Refunds- Families enrolled in Before and/or After School will be receiving communication early this week from Peggy Farr, our Bookkeeper, about what will be needed to request and process a refund for any fees paid for time when students did not attend school.
      • The WCPSS deadline for your response will be Friday, May 15th- so please respond as soon as you receive the communication from Mrs. Farr!
        • If the deadline is not met, due to the close out procedures for the end of the fiscal year, a refund may not be able to be processed until after August 1st- Thank you for your attention to this email and the forms required.
    • School and Class Pictures: Families should have received your unique code to order photos directly from Strawbridge. If not, please call 919-460-3469 and leave a message. Mrs. Moore will get back to you with additional information.
      • Class photos- If you did not order a whole class photo for 2019-20 and would like to order one- please go to www.strawbridge.net   can order from their on-line site strawbridge.com and enter the access code for class photos for FWES. Access Code: FM339850
        • If you ordered a class photo- it will be distributed to you before the end of the school year.

    FWES PTA Updates:

    • Thank you! Thank you to our families for helping us honor the staff at FWES during Teacher Appreciation Week with creative virtual appreciation activities! The PTA created a gift bag for each staff member with a stress ball globe in it and a note that the FWES Staff mean the "world" to us. Mrs. Pierce, Mr. Beamish, Mrs. Plotkin and Mrs. Goodrum were already planning personal visits to the home of each staff member and they happily took our gift to each staff member this week. The PTA will be honoring them, when we can, with a catered meal and look forward to face to face thank yous!
    • Art to Remember: As of May 6th, Art to Remember was not yet back up and running to produce the items ordered. The PTA will continue to update families as additional information is available.
    • Yearbooks: We are excited to announce that the yearbook is completed and has arrived. They may not yet be distributed due to the district and state guidelines. As if we were in school, we will likely distribute yearbooks the last 2-3 weeks of the year, if there is approval to complete that process.
      • We are hoping to coordinate with FWES to also do class photo distribution with yearbooks.

    FWES Morning News

    Dear Farmington Woods Families,

I am heartbroken that we will not be able to return to our school building for the remainder of this year, but know that it will keep our students, staff and families safe and well. Farmington Woods is a family and just like we are having to be apart from our family members, we will have to remain apart from our school family. However, just like our family members, we can still see them through Google Meets in our classrooms, Virtual Picnic Lunches/Snacks, commenting on their work or projects and sharing our IB Attribute of Caring in all we do.

It will not be easy to finish our year this way, especially for our 5th graders, but we will make it the best it can be and when we can finally get together to celebrate a great year of learning- it is going to be a wonderful celebration!

We ask the support of all families in understanding that the Governor also indicated that learning will continue through the end of the year- for WCPSS that will be Friday, June 12th. Our teachers will continue to prepare learning for students that includes NEW material of the essential content they will need when starting the next grade level. In order to have your child as prepared as possible we will need your partnership more than ever. Remember- teachers have daily office hours where parents and/or students can reach out if you have any questions about assignments- and if those times don't work with your schedules- just let the teacher know and they can find another time:) We know how challenging Remote Learning is and want to help you as much as we can.

Have a wonderful Remote Learning Week #3!

Sending love and virtual hugs, Winston Pierce

FWES Staff Support and Office Hours

Please remember to reach out to your child's teacher or any other staff member at FWES if you need help or support with Remote Learning or other needs your family may have. We are happy to set up a time to talk with you or through a Google Meet:) You may email the staff member or call the main office at 919-460-3469 and Mrs. Moore will be happy to share your message with the appropriate staff member. Please remember it may take up to 24-36 hours to get a response from a phone message based on our virtual school setting- email is the fastest and most direct way to contact a staff member:)

    Spring Pictures

Information will be coming to families in the next week about how to go on line and see your child's proof and order Spring Pictures. Each student has an individual code that has to be shared with the parent so staff will be reaching out via email and phone calls to share that code and the information on where to go to see the proof. Strawbridge Picture Company appreciates your patience as they were shut down as a non-essential business. They hope to begin to process orders to mail to your home soon!

    Field Trip Refund Checks

We are currently processing the refunds from 4 different grade levels for field trips that were canceled. Each check requires several steps and two signatures so getting that completed, while not in the building, for over 400 families is time consuming. We hope to have checks begin to go out in the mail by the beginning of next week. Thank you for your patience!

Device Distribution: We were happy to have shared more than 140 devices and school supplies with families on Tuesday of last week during our Drive Thru Device distribution event. If you were unable to get a device or also need internet to access, WCPSS will be making arrangements in the coming weeks for distribution and connecting students to the internet- watch email regularly for more details! Thanks so much to our amazing staff volunteers (Mrs. Combs, Ms. Herrema, Mrs. Holste, Ms. Rea, Mr. Beamish and our custodial team) along with Mrs. Grice and Mrs. Goodrum who organized the check out process from the Inquiry Center!

Remote Learning Kick Off: This week starts a new adventure for all of our school community as Remote Learning officially begins. Remote learning for students will include NEW learning, not just practice with skills already learned, but the critical 4th quarter content that students need to be prepared for further learning in the quarter and for the next grade. Thank you for becoming our partner to help make sure our students are learning!

Throughout this transitional learning period- please reach out to your child's teacher or any other staff member to let us know if you need assistance, support or if your child is struggling in any way! Although we are not in our building, we are all still very much engaged in supporting our students and can't wait to see them all again!

Stay safe and well and with love,

    FWES Courtyard Construction- Outdoor Classroom/Amphitheater

We have been excited to be working with the PTA and WCPSS on plans and a budget to create an outdoor classroom/amphitheater area in our wonderful FWES Courtyard. Well, with school out, the construction team has begun work on the area. With no one on campus, they are hopeful to get a huge jump start on the construction as they won't have to work around students moving through the two entrances to the courtyard on a regular basis. As we have photos to share we will! It will be exciting to have yet another area where IB/PYP learning can happen for students!

    March Book Madness- Elite Eight

The Elite Eight have been chosen:
    Breakout  vs Front Desk
    Amal Unbound vs New Kid
Lu vs The Insignificant Life of a Cactus
Marcus Vega Doesn't Speak Spanish vs The Great treeHouse War

There were no perfect brackets but 3 students chose 7 of the Elite Eight correctly !

The next bracket is available in the Specialists' google classroom under the Media/Technology section for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
Voting will end for this round on Friday, April 17th at 5:00pm.

          • Students K-5 will access learning experiences through their Wake ID Portal- K will use See Saw and 1st-5th will use Google Classroom
          • Video lessons and engagement activities that your child will complete at home based on the schedule that meets your family's needs each day- about 2 hours of new learning experiences a day
            • ELA, Math and Inquiry Units (for Science and Social Studies)
          • Daily times when teachers will interact live with students- a mixture each week of whole group, small group and one on one- at FWES these times will be offered in the AM and PM in order to meet schedule needs across all families.
          • Students will have one lesson and engagement each week from our many specialists, too. (Art, Music, PE, Spanish, Mandarin, Media/Technology and Guidance)
          • The time from 11am-1pm will be protected to allow families to access food distribution sites in WCPSS, no live interactions will be scheduled during this time.
          • Students will be asked to complete at least 15 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of physical activity (not just PE with Mr. Eller) each day, too.

Mrs. Pierce's Virtual Picnics: Students (with photo/video permission) are invited to join Mrs. Pierce for lunch from 12:00-12:30pm. Please sign up on a day when your grade level is listed. There are limited spots, but there will be more opportunities throughout the school closure, too! The link to the virtual picnic will be emailed to the email address provided in the sign up, the night before the scheduled picnic. I look forward to seeing many of you soon!

    Dismissal Process Reminders:

Getting our 740 students home safely each day is a challenging task and we have several procedures in place to insure the safety of each student. Thank you for reviewing the reminders below and the dismissal documents so that we can continue to have a smooth dismissal each day.

    Transportation Changes:

    • Written notes are required to notify a teacher of a transportation change- these cannot be made over the phone for the safety of students
      • Email should not be used to change transportation- as teachers don't have much time during the day to check email or they may be absent and would not see the email and get the information to the school
    • Students will not be released from the front office after 3:15pm- please arrive by 3:15pm if you need to sign your child out from school early

    Bus Reminders:

    • All Bus riders MUST have a bus tag on their backpack to get on the bus. If your child loses his/her tag or gets a new bookbag- please remind them to go to the office to get a new bus tag.
    • Students may not eat or drink on the bus.
    • Students may not use electronic devices- including cell phones while on a school bus (unless there is an emergency)

    Walker Reminders:

    • Walkers are dismissed at 3:45pm- Adults picking up walkers need to be at school by 3:45pm. Walkers with regular late pick ups will be asked to use the carpool dismissal process. Thank you for making sure all walkers are safely on their way home before carpool begins.

    Carpool Reminders:

PTA will have a sign in table in the lobby and then families will need to walk around to the field for the event (see times below). Students should make sure they are dressed appropriately for the fun run- tennis shoes/sneakers are a MUST on Thursday. Teachers will distribute the Fun Run T-Shirts to ALL students for the run on Thursday morning.

Thank you for supporting our PTA as they do sooooo many things that support our students, our school and our IB/PYP magnet program through funds raised at this primary fund raiser of the year!

Report Card Delay- from 11/12 to 11/15: The Power School application (student data system for all public schools in NC) was unavailable to teachers and school staff this weekend due to an emergency upgrade needed to fix some problems. As our teachers were unable to access the system to begin completing report cards- we are going to delay the date they will be sent home from Tuesday, November 12th to Friday, November 15th to provide our fantastic staff the time they need to complete the report cards and narrative comments. Information about your child's progress will be shared as part of your conference with your child's teacher- it is just the process required to enter it all into the system to print a report card that will be delayed.

    Upcoming Testing/Assessments:

    • CogAt Testing- All 3rd Graders: All 3rd graders in NC participate in the CogAt testing in November. The CogAt assesses a student's cognitive ability, similar to an IQ test. Results will be sent home with families when they are returned.

    • NC Check Ins: The state provides schools with quarterly Check In Math assessments to provide teachers with information on how well students mastered the standards from each Quarter- in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. These assessments are given on line and have been scheduled by grade levels at a time that best meets their needs in the next two weeks. Please contact your teacher if you have additional questions.

    FWES Campus Safety Reminders:

    • Dogs are Not Allowed on FWES Campus: Dogs are not allowed on FWES Campus during arrival, dismissal or any other time when students are in attendance (such as before/after school program). If you have a dog with you during arrival or dismissal, you will need to remain off of the campus on Hampton Valley Road. WCPSS policy 4203 defines animals in schools/on campus and for the safety of all students, staff and visitors, you must please remain off campus if you have a dog with you.
    • Carpool Traffic on Hampton Valley Road: The Cary Police Department worked with the FWES community to create our current traffic pattern- right turns in and out ONLY during arrival and dismissal. Hampton Valley Road is a 2-lane road- therefore, passing vehicles lined up to enter the campus is against traffic laws. Cary Police has been notified by several parents concerned about safety and issued several tickets this week to cars passing vehicles on the double yellow line. Thank you for making safety, not your convenience, a priority when arriving to the FWES campus during active arrival and dismissal times.
      • Reminders
        • Hampton Valley is a TWO LANE ROAD- DO NOT PASS STOPPED VEHICLES- double yellow line does not allow for passing

    • Monday, September 30th is a Teacher Workday- No School for Students
    • Wednesday, October 9th is a Teacher Workday- No School for Students
    • October 31st is a Regular School Day! WCPSS has moved the weather make up day from November 1st to October 31st; November 1st will be a Teacher Workday.

School Attendance (including late arrivals and early check outs) Guidelines: Mrs. Frahm, our school social worker, monitors student attendance at FWES. She has included information below as a reminder to families the importance of regular school attendance in order to support student academic growth. The instructional day is from 9:15am to 3:45pm. Even being 15 minutes late or checked out 15 minutes early daily will result in 44 hours of lost instructional time over the course of a school year. Every minute counts!

Reminder that notes to excuse absences must be returned immediately. Families with students who have excessive absences (even if excused) will be notified by the school and offered support through the social worker.
