Good evening Bugg families!  This is Becky Foote, Principal of Bugg Magnet Center for Design and Computer Sciences with a weekly message for all families.  This message - and more detailed information -  is available on our website. Please check our website regularly.

I am very proud of our staff and students, as we have started with a focus on positive behavior expectations,  delivering innovative and engaging lessons, and meeting students’ needs.  We have set high expectations for student behavior, as we need to ensure that our classroom and school-wide behavior supports  student learning.  Please remind your children of this expectation.

This Thursday, September 21, is a work-day for staff so that our staff can participate in professional learning activities.  Students will not have school on Thursday.

I want to remind all families about our school hours.  Doors open at 8:40 AM.  Please have students here at that time so they can participate in breakfast and AM Innovation.  Students must arrive by 9:05 to receive breakfast.  Parents are required to use the carpool loop in the mornings and afternoons when dropping off or picking up children.  Please do not drop students off on Cooper Road or other nearby streets, as this is not safe for students.

Our day ends at 3:40PM.  Please arrive close to that time to pick up students. Our afternoon carpool is moving very smoothly.  Please remember that there are no left turns allowed onto the school driveway during carpool.  Be on the look-out for additional cones this week to ensure safety during arrival and dismissal.

If students arrive after 9:10 AM, parents must walk the children into the main office and sign them in using the computer.

Please do not check children out early in the afternoons.  Students are expected to be in class until 3:40 each day, as our learning activities take place till then.

Please consider joining our PTA.  Membership forms will be  sent home with all students.  Your membership helps to provide ongoing support to our programming for  staff and students.  In addition, we will be holding a membership competition between grade levels and the PTA will offer incentives to classes with the highest percentage of PTA members.  Details will be shared soon.

Please mark your calendar for October 4.  This is International “Walk to School Day”.  We encourage all families to park their cars at Walnut Creek Softball Field by 8:20 and walk to school with their children on that day. This event was a huge success last year, and we hope you will join us!  In addition, our Open House will be held at 5:30 that evening.

    Upcoming Dates/ Events:

September 21 - Teacher work day

September 29 - Early Release - all students will be released at 1:10 PM

Thank you for sharing your children with us.  They are our most precious resource and it is my pleasure to see them learn and grow each day.

Good evening Bugg families!  This is Becky Foote, Principal of Bugg Magnet Center for Design and Computer Sciences with a weekly message for all families.  This message - and more detailed information -  is available on our website. Please check our website regularly.

We have gotten off to a terrific start to this school year!  Student are settling in to their new classrooms and   focused on learning; and,  teachers are providing engaging lessons and activities!

As I have previously shared, our days starts each morning, after a quick breakfast,  with an opportunity for students to create, collaborate, and think critically during our new AM Innovation time!  This has given children a great way to start their days, interacting with classmates, communicating about their designs, and building community in every classroom.  This week we are celebrating Dot Day, to promote confidence and courage in each and every child in our school!  Please make sure your child arrives early in the morning in order to participate in these fun learning activities!

All students in grades 1-5 will be participating in mClass assessments this week.  Please be sure students are well rested and ready to do their very best!

Our 3rd grade students will take the Beginning of Grade test in Reading later this week.  More information will be coming from third grade teachers.  We wish our 3rd grade students the very best!

    Please note the following items:

    • All parents should allow students the independence of walking to class or to breakfast, with other students beginning this week.  If our kindergarten students need assistance finding their classroom, we  will have staff to assist them.
    • If students arrive after 9:10 AM, parents must walk the children into the main office and sign them in using the computer in the main office.
    • In the afternoons, we will begin dismissing students at 3:40.  There will be no dismissal from the main office after 3:15.  We discourage early checkout, except in rare cases, as teaching and learning will be occurring till the end of each day.
    • Our school is focused on teaching and learning and your child’s teacher is  working very hard to provide engaging lessons that meet the needs of your child.  Please remind children that they must practice the 3 R’s:  Ready to Learn, Respect, and Responsibility.  Please reinforce these expectations at home.
    • We will continue to work together with parents, and will call you if necessary, to ensure a productive learning environment for all students.  Hallways are to be considered QUIET ZONES, with voices off, so as not to disrupt the learning environment of others.
    • Students are expected to be ready to learn in each classroom, showing respect for their peers and teacher at all times.
    • Please consider joining our PTA.  Membership forms were sent home with all students.  Your membership helps to provide ongoing support to our programming for  staff and students!
    • Also, from our PTA, the first fundraiser of the year, School Mall Booklets, has begun.  Families are asked to provide names and addresses of friends and family members.  Students receive a prize for participating and an opportunity to participate in a drawing to win larger prizes.  Please consider supporting this endeavor.

We had a wonderful first week of school, and we look forward to welcoming our kindergarten and Pre-K students starting tomorrow.

    • Students may begin arriving at school at 8:40 every morning.  Please do not drop children off or allow children who walk to arrive prior to this time.
    • To ensure the safety of all students, all students who ride in a car to school must be dropped off and picked up in the carpool loop.
    • We will be sending home Walker forms with all students who have been identified as walkers.  Parents will need to  complete these forms so that we have complete information and are certain that the students are walking home and not to awaiting cars. These forms will be available online soon as well.
    • Parents who come into school with their child in the morning may walk students to class through the end of this week.  Beginning next week, we ask that all parents allow students the independence of walking to class or to breakfast, with other students.

    • Students must memorize both their lunch numbers and their carpool numbers.  Please practice these at home.
    • Please make sure children know their first and last name, grade, and teacher.

Posted by Bridget Cowan at 8/27/2017

    August 27, 2017

Good evening Bugg families!  This is Becky Foote, Principal of Bugg Magnet Center for Design and Computer Sciences.  I am excited to welcome you to the 2017-18 school year, and share some important information regarding opening day procedures.

All students in first  through fifth grades will begin school tomorrow, Monday, August 28th.  Kindergarten and Pre-K students will be on a modified staggered entry schedule this week.

Students should arrive at school no sooner that 8:40 AM each day. We offer free breakfast to all students, and encourage all families to take advantage of this.  Beginning this year, students will report directly to the cafeteria for breakfast when they arrive at school.  Students must be here by 9:05 AM to receive breakfast.  Immediately after breakfast, from 8:40 - 9:10,  students will begin an exciting new morning routine called AM Innovation.  I encourage you to  have your children at school at 8:40 each morning so they can take advantage of this daily opportunity to be creative and  collaborative, and to start the day with fun design challenges.

In preparation for the first day, please be sure that your child has a back back and necessary supplies.  We also ask they you make sure that your child knows his or her first and last name, their grade, and their teacher.  I know this will take practice with our younger students, so please spend time reviewing that information so each child can share it at school.  It is critically important that your child’s teacher know what mode of transportation your child will use both in the morning and the afternoon.  Children may ride the bus as assigned by the transportation department, may ride with you via carpool, or may walk - if and only if you live within the designated walking zone.  All parents must receive a new carpool number for 2017-18 as needed, as the carpool numbers and tags have changed for this year. Each family will receive two tags, so that you can easily have two different family members approved to pick up your child, and you will not need to transfer the tags from one vehicle to another.   Please come in tomorrow morning to get a new number if necessary.  Old tags will not be honored.   Parents who arrive by car to pick up children without a tag will need to wait until 4:10 to pick up their child.

If, on any given day, you wish to change your child’s method of transportation, these requests must be received by the main office by 2:00 PM.  All requests must be received in writing via a note to the classroom teacher, via email to Ms. Sanchez in the main office (csanchezguerrero@wcpss.net), or by fax at 919-626-4427. We will not be using Dojo or text messages to communicate transportation changes.  This change is necessary to ensure the safety of all Bugg students.

I look forward to seeing our families tomorrow morning and look forward to an amazing year!  Please stay tuned for more info about our new theme and opportunities to learn more about ways we can work together to design the very best school experiences for your child!

    Have a great evening!

    Becky  Foote
