Tardy and absence policy for WCPSS Middle Schools:
Tardy: If students are not in their classroom by 8:15am they are considered tardy. Parents are required to sign students in at the front office each time they arrive late to school if they do not have a doctor’s note.
Absent: When your child is absent from school, you are not required to call in on the day of the absence. Please send in a handwritten or typed note. Do not use the Request for Educational Leave for absences due to illness. Your note should have the following information:
- Date the note is being submitted
- Student's First and Last Name
- Student's Grade Level and Track
- Dates of Student Absences
- Reason for Absence
- Parent/Guardian Signature
All notes should be turned in to Student Services within 2 days of student returning to school. (Emails for absences are not accepted.) Without a note, absence is recorded as unexcused. Please allow up to 48 hours upon submitting absence notes to be reflected in official school records.

Your child’s success starts with showing up.
Coming to school every day, ready to learn, builds strong habits and supports academic growth. By law, children ages 7–16 must attend school regularly.
Excused absences
Your child’s absence may be excused for:
-
Illness or injury
-
A death in the family
-
Health care appointments
-
Court appearances
-
Religious observances
-
Natural disasters
-
Educational opportunities (requires advance approval)
To request an excused absence for an educational reason, complete one of these forms before the absence:
-
Request for Excused Absence for Educational Reasons (English)
-
Request for Excused Absence for Educational Reasons (Spanish)
Unexcused absences
Please send a written or digital note within two days of your child returning to school. Without a note, the absence will be marked unexcused.
If your child has three or more unexcused absences, your school will contact you to discuss ways to support regular attendance.
Making up work
Students are responsible for completing all missed work. Teachers will share schedules and expectations for making up assignments.
