Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Pesce

Hello! My name is Mrs. Pesce ( pronounced "Pesh"), and I moved here from Winston-Salem when my husband got a position in the area. While moving during Covid is something I wouldn't wish on anyone, being at Underwood since the fall 2020 has been a gift. Underwood has such extensive academic, creative, and social-emotional learning for children. I hope to bring whatever strengths I have to this position in order to help support you and your family.

My background

I have been a counselor for 32 years. I have a Master's degree in community counseling and post-graduate courses and training in family counseling. My first job was working in a group home with adolescents with behavior and family challenges. Later, I did in-home counseling and outpatient counseling for adults and children. I am also a N.C. Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC).

When the public mental health system was dismantled, I took a position as the Assistant Dean for Continuing Studies at Salem College, helping academically advise and counsel adult students getting their Bachelor's degree or teaching certificate. i also did community programs, recruiting and marketing for Salem.

After having my two girls, I began work as a school counselor. I went back to graduate school at N.C. A&T and took courses in school counseling and received my school counselor's license. I have been a public/private mental health counselor for 13 years and a school counselor for 19 years.

While I do miss working with clients privately and doing in-home work, I truly love working in a school setting. I love kids: I love the sweet and funny things they say, their honesty, their sense of humor, and their learning opportunities too. Schools are the hubs of social-emotional and academic support and development for our children, and we have been working diligently to address the social-emotional gaps that the pandemic has caused. We see kids learning and growing in all areas and it's quite a sight to see!

My approach

I take a strengths-based approach in mind when working with students, focusing on growing the integrity, strengths and gifts of students. I incorporate cognitive-behavioral work, family systems thinking, some Brief Therapy approaches, relationship-building, Conscious Discipline, some 1-2-3 Magic! and play therapy techniques when working with students.

I look forward to getting to know you and your family. Please email me at fpesce@wcpss if you have any questions or if I can help in any way. :)
