Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a pursuit?
A pursuit is the reason why your child needs a flexible schedule. It is the activity that he/she is involved in that conflicts with the traditional school schedule. Some examples are pre-professional ballet, gymnastics, travel sports team, intense training in soccer, hockey, or baseball.
-
Why is there seat time associated with online courses?
Crossroads FLEX was created to be a blended learning school. This means there is a combination of online courses and face to face time. Seat time also ensures that students are being progress monitored and we are able to assist students in real time.
-
What if my child does not meet his/her seat time due to his pursuit taking place out of town?
Submit a Pursuit absence form ahead of the absence and seat time will be prorated that week to accommodate your child’s pursuit schedule.
-
What are some options if my child is struggling with online learning?
Your child can make appointments with content specialists virtually or face to face; take advantage of NCVPS peer tutoring; reach out to his/her NCVPS teacher; request a 1:1 or group session from the content specialist; form a peer study group; increase seat time; take more blended learning courses.
-
What does the application consist of?
General contact information, an essay that must be written by the student, 4 letters of recommendation (English Teacher, Math Teacher, Administrator or Counselor, Coach/Supervisor), most recent report card, final grades from the previous school year and any End of Grade or End of Course test results.
-
What is the difference between an NCVPS course and a blended learning course?
An NCVPS course is taught solely online including an online teacher. Students can receive additional support from content specialists here at Crossroads FLEX, anytime.
Blended learning courses are offered and taught by teachers at Crossroads FLEX. Course material is presented online and face to face so seat time for the course will be required to be successful.
-
My child does not need help from teachers. Can you just enroll him/her in all online courses?
If a blended course is offered, we will enroll your child in that course. Due to the required weekly amount of seat time, your child should be able to attend classes as scheduled. In addition, we have learned that students are more successful in all their courses if they have a balance of online courses and blended learning courses. Should your child’s schedule conflict with the blended learning course schedule due to his/her pursuit, we handle those cases on an individual basis.
-
If my child does not meet his/her seat time during a week, can he/she make that time up the following week?
No. Attendance is taken each week based on a student’s number of required seat time. A student’s attendance for the week is recorded and based on the percentage of seat time met that particular week. Seat time will be prorated for any week containing holidays and/or workdays.
-
Due to the flexible hours, can students leave campus for lunch?
Only juniors and seniors are allowed to leave campus for lunch. Parents must sign consent at the beginning of the year for juniors and seniors to have this privilege. Students only have 45 minutes for lunch.
-
How will I be informed as a parent about my child’s academic progress?
Parents, students, administration, and teachers can receive progress reports through Powerschool for blended courses. Additionally, parents can sign up for observer access for NCVPS and FLEX Canvas courses. Each child also has access to a Counselor and Intervention Teacher to discuss academic progress and strategies for success.
-
How is a student’s final grade calculated for each course?
The course grades in FLEX Blended courses follow WCPSS Policy and the Crossroads FLEX Grading Plan. Access the full plan here: https://www.wcpss.net/domain/15125
The course grade in NCVPS courses are cumulative. Therefore, a student’s course grade is 80% of his/her final grade and the exam is 20% of his/her final grade. Grades reported during 1st and 3rd quarters are more like progress reports and will not count as a percentage of a student’s final grade.
