    Team Green -

Thank you to our fabulous PTA at Green for a great fall truck festival on Friday.  It was great to see our community out and about, mingling and enjoying each other.

    Positivity Project!

Last week we learned about the character strength Curiosity!  This week's focus is Teamwork.  Please ask your children about these character strengths and ways that they can show them at school, at home, and in the community!

    Parent Academy

Thank you to the parents who signed forms and registered to attend our Parent Academy on September 20.  We had 127 families indicate that they would attend.  We secured childcare, resources, interpreters, and food for this many people.  Unfortunately, only 16 families were represented that night.  This event costs money from our school budget - money that will not be available for supplies, training, etc.  We really need your support - if you return the sign up forms and indicate that you will attend the session, please do so.  We are eager to work with our families and to provide resources to you that will allow you to support learning at home.  Thanks so much for your support and especially to those families who did attend!

Our next Parent Academy will be held on Thursday, November 15.

    Hurricane Florence Recovery Support

Team Green remember that we are supporting Hurricane Florence recovery efforts by collecting applesauce cups and fruit cups for the Eastern NC Food Bank.  The Green Student Lighthouse Team is in the lobby each morning collecting the items.  We're collecting through Friday - please support their efforts!

    Readers are Leaders Night

Join us October 2 at 6:15pm for a fun night of reading with kids.  Put your PJs on and bring your pillow and your favorite book!  Students can read in their teacher's classrooms or in the media center with our World Language teachers.

Parents can attend an information session about our literacy assessments - "What in the World is MClass???"  We'll give you some parent friendly explanations about the assessments we do, how we teach reading at school, and how you can support your young reader at home.  Join Ms. Lankford and me in the Media Center at 6:15pm, then join your child in the classroom at 6:45pm for reading.

We'll wrap up the evening around 7:30pm.  Please join us!

    Parent Advisory Council (PAC)

Thank you to those who attended our PAC meeting on September 7.  We discussed Restart and some changes that we are requested from the school board and from the district.  RESTART is an application process available to struggling schools that provides those schools with flexibility to make changes around calendar, school day, curriculum, staffing, and budget.  We have a multidisciplinary team of teachers who are leading the planning, information gathering, and framing process for the changes we'd like to see.

Restart flexibilities that we may be seeking are as follows:

    • use of Expeditionary Learning K-5; alternative avenues for AIG identification
    • teacher evaluation flexibility
    • calendar change from Traditional to Modified Calendar for 2019-2020
    • use of Restorative Circles as an alternative to out of school discipline
    • additional 15-30 minutes to the school day

A parent survey related to calendar change is being translated right now and will be deployed to you upon completion. A separate email will go out to alert you to the survey.

Our next PAC meeting will be Friday, October 5, at 7:45am in the Media Center.
