Posted by Kelly Aman on 1/17/2021 9:00:00 AM

School is closed on Monday, January 18 for the Martin Luther King Day holiday.  Tuesday is a teacher work day.

Classes resume for students on Wednesday, January 20, 2021.  Wednesday is the first day of 3rd quarter and 2nd semester.

    Wednesday is a B Day.

Schedule changes:  If your student is transitioning from Virtual Academy to Plan A/B/C or from Plan A/B/C to Virtual Academy, his/her new schedule starts on Wednesday.  New classes/teachers may be viewed in PowerSchool.  Your child’s 1st semester classes will drop off of their schedule on January 24.  Many teachers have already sent Google classroom invitations to students who will be joining their classes 2nd semester.  Additionally, students can access their grade level Google Classroom to find all google classroom codes.

Action Required:  Materials Pick Up  We were very excited at the number of families who came out last week for Material Distribution.  Even though we had a great turnout, we still have a sizeable number of students who need to pick up materials.  We invite families to come on Thursday, January 21, 8:30-4pm.  We know students are more successful and engaged if they have the materials they need for their lessons. We ask that you bring any novels that need to be returned from first quarter or last school year. Someone will be able to assist you at the front office.

    We appreciate your partnership.

Calling all students to submit photos for our yearbook!  Thank you Wildcat family for your awesome yearbook pictures!  We are still gathering new content, this time on Learning New Things! Have you learned to do something new - a new skill from a YouTube tutorial, maybe a DIY project, new hobby, or recipe? We'd love to see it!  Use the form in the link below to submit pictures of your new skills!

    Learning New Things

Even better news?  All the previous topics are still open for your photo submissions!

🐕 Pets: show us your furry, fuzzy, scaly, or feathered family member!

🏕️ Outdoors: share your outdoors adventures!

🕺 Dance: show us your favorite moves!

📸 ...and a link to upload any picture to the Jostens site that you think would be good for yearbook. (Just make sure to indicate your name and grade, and any details you think might be helpful).

Contact Mrs. Youth if you have any questions: cyouth@wcpss.net

Missed ordering school pictures?  Parents can call LifeTouch Customer Service at 866-955-8342 to get their ID and Code so they can view their photo and order pictures online.

Bus Attestation:   The WCPSS Transportation department is planning for second semester transportation requests.  It is imperative that every student who may need to ride the bus second semester submit an Attestation Form. If a form is not submitted, the student will not be assigned a bus route for second semester.  Submissions can be done online, or your student will bring a form home. Request from Ms. Aman  I am requesting that all families link their Harris Teeter card to West Millbrook.  Our school code is 1986.  Other area schools earn over $1000 per quarter from this passive fundraiser, which is 10X what West Millbrook is earning.  This is an EASY way for our PTA to earn funds.  Please take a moment to link your Harris Teeter card.  Ask your friends and family members to link to our school as well.  Our PTA does a phenomenal job supporting students and teachers at West Millbrook and this is a easy way to support the PTA!

African American Quiz Bowl will be February 20.  See the attached flyer and contact Mr. Wishon (rwishon@wcpss.net) for more information. AA Quiz Bowl

Posted by Kelly Aman on 1/2/2021 6:00:00 PM

I hope our Wildcat families enjoyed a peaceful and healthy winter break!  As I reflect on this school year, I am grateful to our families who have partnered with us during this very unusual school year.  You are indispensable and I appreciate all that you do to make learning from home possible for our students/your children.  I am very proud of our students who have embraced challenges that a year ago didn't exist.  Our students are resilient and remarkable!  I am also proud of the faculty and staff at West Millbrook who lead learning both in-person and remotely!  I admire their creativifty and commitment to their students.  I am grateful to be part of the West Millbrook Magnet Middle School community and I am proud to be the Head of School for our IBMYP.  Happy New Year, and may it be a year of prosperity, health and happiness for all of us.

Welcome back Wildcats!  School resumes (remotely) on Monday, January 4 at 8:15am.

    Monday is a B Day.

All students will be learning from home this week (January 4 – 8) and next week (January 11 – 15).

    • Students will engage in live instruction via GoogleMeet on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Students will follow their regular class schedule/bell schedule on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
    • Both Wednesdays are asynchronous learning days. New material will be presented on these days.  Attendance and assignments will be available at 8:15am on Wednesdays so that students do not have to sign back in throughout the day.  Additionally, teachers may host small group Google Meets on Wednesdays.

Interim reports were sent home with all Plan B students prior to winter break.  Virtual Academy families should access PowerSchool to review academic progress.  All students and families may access current grades via PowerSchool.  Please review your child’s academic progress and contact your child’s teachers if you have questions.  Second quarter ends on January 15 so it is important for students to submit any missing assignments and to ensure the finish 1st semester strongly.

If you are unsure submit another form or if you have questions email Bridget Rogers, brogers@wcpss.net.

    Attestation Form

Assignment Strips:  Parents/legal guardians with a PowerSchool account will access their 2021-22 School Assignment via parent portal.  Your student will not receive a hard copy of the assignment strip.  Families will be able to sign into their PowerSchool account and access this information on the left hand side by clicking Next Year Assignment.

If you have any questions about school assignment for the 2021-22 school year, please contact Kara Garwolds at kgarwolds@wcpss.net or Mary Horton at mhorton@wcpss.net or your child’s counselor.

2nd Semester Schedules:  We know that students and families are anxious about what second semester will look like at West Millbrook Magnet Middle School.  We continue to work on schedules for students who are moving from Plan B to Virtual Academy or from Virtual Academy to Plan B for 2nd semester.  Our goal is to provide as much consistency for students as possible.  However, the change from Virtual Academy to Plan B or from Plan B to Virtual Academy will require a schedule change and/or a teacher change in some instances.  Classroom capacity, class size, balanced cohorts and staffing are all considerations as we work through the scheduling process for 2nd semester.  We are preparing for almost 200 additional students to begin in person learning and we will ensure safety protocols are followed.  Thank you for patience.

Year 2 School Counselor:  I’m pleased to announce that Wanda Moore will serve as an interim school counselor for our 7th grade students.  Wanda is a retired school counselor and her wealth of experiences enable her to be immediately effective.  She started last Friday and is excited to get to know our Year 2 students and their families.  Ms. Moore may be reached at wmoore@wcpss.net or 919 870-4050 x 24304.

Friday is a state designated Remote Learning day and all students will be learning from home on Friday.  New material will be presented.  Attendance and assignments will be available at 8:15am on Friday so that students do not have to sign back in throughout the day.  Additionally, teachers may host small group Google Meets on Friday.  Friday is a B Day so students will have back to back B Days this week; however, this balances the number of A days and B days that are remote learning days.

    EL Novel Return

It is hard to believe we are halfway through the 2nd quarter.  During 2nd quarter distribution, we did not collect 1st quarter novels because students were still using them.

It is now time to return 2nd quarter novels.  If your student is scheduled to be on campus this week, they can return the novel then.  If you are a VA family, we ask that you drop it off at the front office Monday- Friday 8:30- 4pm.   Remember dismissal and carpool is daily 2pm-3:30.

If your student has not returned books (ELA or library) from last school year, please return them at this time as well.  Fines have been added to students' accounts for missing books.

Holiday Hugs:  Each year, the Counseling and Student Services Staff of West Millbrook provide a holiday assistance program for students in need called Holiday Hugs. In previous years, students and their families were invited to school to share a meal and to receive holiday gifts.  Due to the pandemic, our program has changed.  We would like to provide each student in the program with two $25.00 gift cards.  Also, since we are unable to provide the in-person dinner celebration for our families, we would like to provide each family with a $25.00 gift card to Food Lion as well. The Counseling and Student Services Staff needs the help of our Wildcat community to make this event a success. If you would like to help, please use this sign-up genius to donate. Donations are due back to the front office by Thursday, December 10th. We appreciate your help!

Morning Carpool begins at 7:45am.  Students will participate in health screening prior to exiting the car.  Have your student put his/her mask on, roll down his/her window and follow the directions of staff on duty in carpool.

For morning carpool, remain on the right against the curb.  After your student exits the car, you will pull forward and exit campus.  For morning carpool, all cars remain in a single file line.

Afternoon Carpool begins at 3:00pm.  Families should pull all the way forward to the stop bar line.  Remind your student to be alert for your arrival and to move quickly into your car.  Once your student is in your car, pull left out of the carpool line and exit campus.  Cars should continue to pull all the way forward and fill all available space for afternoon carpool.  Students may not congregate in carpool and must be picked up promptly.

Walkers/Bike Riders:   Due to the pandemic, parents are encouraged to either use the yellow bus service or carpool their children to school.  If your child will be walking or riding a bike, they may enter campus either through the back path or through the cafeteria driveway.  Students may not walk or bike up the main carpool entrance.

Walkers/Bikers arriving from Strickland Road are to remain on the sidewalk until they enter the cafeteria parking lot driveway (do not cut across the bus lot).  They should proceed up the driveway to the sidewalk outside the cafeteria where they will participate in health screening.  Walkers/bikers using the back path will be screened as they arrive on campus.  Walkers/bikers coming from the opposite side of Strickland Road must use the crosswalk to cross Strickland and should follow the directions of the crossing guard.

Buses:  Bus riders will participate in health screening after they exit the bus each day.  Please remind your student to follow the directions of the bus driver and that all school rules apply on the bus.

Item Drop Off and Messages:  Please make certain your child arrives to school with any items needed for the day.  Due to the pandemic, we are not able to accept items for students during the school day.  Additionally, please make certain you confirm after school transportation plans with your student before he/she comes to school.  While we can take an emergency message for a student, we are not able to accept routine messages regarding after school plans.

    Healthy Hygiene and Safety Protocols:

Students are encouraged to wash hands frequently throughout the school day and to use the hand sanitizer stations available in hallways and all classrooms.

All students (and all adults) must wear a face covering at all times while on the West Millbrook campus.  Masks breaks have been scheduled during the day, weather permitting.

Physical distancing will be in effect at all times.  Classroom configurations have been altered and signage is posted throughout the campus reminding students to remain 6 feet apart.  Please remind your student to stay 6 feet from others.  Physical contact is not permitted (no high fives, hugs, hand shakes, etc).

Cohort A students and Cohort C have done a terrific job with safety protocols and I am confident Cohort B students will do just as well.

Student Materials and Bookbags:    Students are not permitted to share materials or use shared materials at school (scissors, markers, colored pencils, etc).  Please send materials your child may need for learning in a plastic bag in his/her bookbag.  Also, students need their ELA novel and workbook and their math workbook every day along with something to write in and something to write with (think several pens and pencils).

Medication Drop OffIf your child is a Plan B student and you have medication to drop off at school, we are currently scheduling appointments to practice social distancing procedures.  Contact our receptionist, Kara Garwolds, at kgarwolds@wcpss.net to schedule your appointment.  Please remember the 1702 form must accompany the medication.

WCPSS Chromebooks:  Students who have a WCPSS issued Chromebook should bring it with them each day when they return to school.  Students who do not have a school-issued device may choose to participate in BYOD; however, it is not necessary for students to have a computer at school in order to participate in lessons while learning in person.

Physical and Health Education (PHE):  On days when your student has PHE, encourage him/her to wear comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for physical activity.  Students will not dress out, but we want all students to be able to enjoy physical activity – it’s good for students’ physical and mental well-being.

Lunch:  Students will eat in small groups in the cafeteria.  Students will be permitted to remove their face covering only to eat lunch and will put their face covering back on as soon as they finish eating.  Students are not permitted to talk while they are eating.  Once students finish eating and put their face coverings in place, they will be permitted to socialize, which we realize is important to student well-being, but physical distancing must be maintained.

Health Screening:  All students will participate in health screening when they arrive on campus before entering a school building.  Carpoolers will be screened at carpool.  Bus riders will be screened as they exit the bus and walkers will be screened as they arrive on campus.  We are asking all families to check in with their children before they depart for school.  If they are not feeling well or have a temperature, please keep them at home.  This helps maintain safety in our school community and also prevents you from having to come to school to pick them up.

Bus Information:  Bus routes are available at BUS ROUTES FOR WEST MILLBROOK.  For middle school, riders must sit one student to a seat, facing forward.  All riders must wear their face covering for the duration of the bus ride and when they arrive at school.  Students will be health screened when they arrive on campus before entering the building.

Water Fountains/Water Bottles:  Students are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle with them to school.  Students may not drink directly from water fountains, but may use the fountains to refill their bottles.  Hydration is important!

Health and Safety Protocols:  If your child is not already comfortable wearing a face covering for an extended period of time (think 6 hours), please begin practicing this at home in order to increase stamina.  We are a community that cares about one another and this begins with the 3Ws:  Wash your hands frequently, Wait at least 6 feet away from others and Wear your face covering.  Wash, Wait, Wear:  Because We Care!

School will look different:  Begin talking with your student about how school will be different when students return to campus.  Classroom seating will be physically distanced with most classrooms having 10 or less students in the classroom.  Students will maintain physical distancing in the hallways during arrival and transition.  Students will not use lockers.  Students will not dress out for physical and health education as locker rooms are closed.

Preparing Your Child for In Person Learning and the Return-to-Campus Guide for Families are updated regularly and families should read them thoroughly and review them regularly.
