    International Mindedness

“The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who recognize their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet. Central to this aim is international-mindedness. (What is an IB Education?, 2)”

The IB Middle Years Programme encourages international mindedness in students three ways:

    • We reflect on our personal perspective, culture, and identity, and then on those of others. By learning to appreciate the differences in others, we can work towards a more peaceful and sustainable world.
    • We study more than one language because we believe multilingualism provides opportunities to develop intercultural understanding and respect. We learn to appreciate that our own language, culture, and worldview is just one of many.
    • We focus on global engagement and meaningful service with the community.  We move beyond awareness and understanding of complex issues in our local and global communities to engagement, action and bringing about meaningful change.

    The IBO Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

This statement guides the work of all IB World Schools across the globe. Each school aligns its own school philosophy with the IBO mission and centers teaching and learning in the school around this mission. Fortunately, much of the WCPSS mission aligns with the IBO, and by implementing the IB Middle Years Programme with fidelity, we can achieve the goals of our school district as well.

  • Ms. Aman's August 30 Message for Families

Posted by Kelly Aman on 8/30/2020 3:00:00 PM

It was fantastic to see our students and their families over the last 2 weeks as families came to school to pick up curriculum materials.  The halls of West Millbrook are far too quiet without our students and we look forward to the time when they return to campus.

Curriculum Materials Pick Up:  Core instruction begins on Monday, August 31.  If you did not pick up your child’s ELA novel and math and ELA workbooks, please come to West Millbrook on Monday or Tuesday between 8am and 4pm to pick up these items that your child needs for learning at home.

Student Device Pick Up:  We have been notified that families of all middle school students who requested a device or hotspot have been contacted about their pick up date.  Check your SPAM or JUNK folder in email if you have not received your pick up date.  If you have questions, contact brogers@wcpss.net

Bell Schedule:  Beginning on August 31, West Millbrook will operate on a normal bell schedule.  School begins at 8:15am and ends at 3:00pm.  Students have 5 classes each day.  Language and Literature and mathematics are daily classes.  All other classes are on an A/B day rotation.  Students will have a one hour lunch period daily while learning at home.  Additionally, teachers will include brain breaks and movement breaks throughout the day. Access the grade level bell schedule here.

Updated Website:  Our website has been streamlined to provide easy access for parents and students while we are learning from home.  Click on the Learning From Home links for one stop access to teacher emails, websites and schedules. Thanks to Diane Walters for the redesign.  And, all the features of our full website are still accessible!

Student Email and Google Classrooms:  Please remind your child to access each teacher's Google classroom every day.  Students also need to check their school email every day.  Helping them develop these routines will support learning from home.

Free/Reduced Lunch:  Effective September 1, families are required to provide a student ID number and pay for their meals based on their meal benefits status. Families are encouraged to use MySchoolBucks to prepay for meals to reduce any payment collections at curbside. Free and reduced-price meals will be available for eligible students. Families may pick up meals at our curb-side locations without a student present if they can provide the student’s name and ID number. Visit wcpss.net/food for updated food distribution location information. Families may still apply for free and reduced-price meals. Eligibility and application information is posted on wcpss.net/meals. For the 2020-21 school year, students who qualify for reduced-price meals will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. Meals will not be distributed for the Labor Day Holiday.

Tdap & Meningococcal Vaccine - 7th Graders!:  If you have a7th grade student, please be sure you are familiar with the immunization and health assessment requirements.  It is still required for 7th graders, whether you are face-to-face or in the Virtual Academy, to receive Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines.  Most medical providers in Wake County are seeing appointments for health assessments and immunizations.  Email a copy of your child’s vaccination records to odiaz@wcpss.net

News from the PTA: Calling all WMMS Families!

We hope you and your children are off to a great school start, as weird and different as this start is!  We are so proud of our school and want it to continue as a thriving and exciting school.  This season, we will not be able to hold our Fall Frenzy or Fall Fundraiser, which typically are at the beginning of school and typically bring in close to $20,000 collectively!  We are sad to not be able to do this, but feel hopeful for exciting spring activities.

Because we cannot hold these two important events in person, the PTA needs your help!  We would love to have you donate to the PTA under our no fuss fundraiser!  Could you donate what you spent at Fall Frenzy/Fall Fundraiser in the past?  Could you donate some pocket change?  Could you get your company to donate a tax deductible donation?  What can you do?  Please click this link now! https://westmillbrookmiddleschool.memberhub.store/

And, we know this is a tough financial time for some…instead of donating money, we ask if you could spare a minute instead and set up some of your accounts so our PTA gets free money?

Do you shop on Amazon?  Of course you do!  When you log in, simply go to www.smile.amazon.com and in the search button, type West Millbrook Middle School PTA and click it – you’re all set now to have Amazon donate part of your purchase proceeds to our PTA!

Do you shop at Harris Teeter?  Next time you check out, ask the cashier to link your VIC card to 1986 (then you are set for a year!)  Easy Peasy!  Harris Teeter will donate part of your purchase proceeds to our school! You do have to relink your card because Harris Teeter unlinks them in June each year.

We so appreciate your help and continued involvement in the PTA even when we are not physically there together! But, we are all there at heart and let’s continue to make West Millbrook Magnet Middle School the best!!

Posted by Kelly Aman on 8/23/2020 10:00:00 AM

1st 10 Days of School:  The first 10 days of school include several typical orientation activities for students, such as grade level and team meetings, Catapult (for Year 1 students), new student orientation for Year 2 and Year 3 students and teacher meet and greets.  You can view the First 10 Days Schedule on our homepage.

Quarter 1 Material Pick Up:  We had 2 successful days of materials distribution to families last week and it was wonderful to see our families and students, even from a distance.  The final day of material pick up is Monday from 2pm – 6pm for families whose last names begin with the letters P – Z or anyone who has not yet picked up materials.  This event will utilize a carpool process where families remain in their cars.  It is important all students have the materials they need for learning from home.  Please contact Bridget Rogers at brogers@wcpss.net if you have questions or need assistance.

Schedule Change Requests:  Counselors will post a schedule change request form in the grade level Google classrooms on August 25.  Requests will be accepted August 25 – 27.  Staffing and operating the Plan B and Virtual Academy schedules severely limit the requests we will be able to accommodate.  Thanks in advance for understanding.  Counselors will communicate with students and parents via email regarding requests that cannot be accommodated.

Student Device Pick Up:  The WCPSS Technology Services Division is preparing 44,000 Chromebooks and 13,000 hotspots for students who requested one through the device needs survey.  If you requested a device, you WILL be notified of your assigned pick up date and pick up time.

Thank you for understanding that we need to limit the number of people who are notified to ensure distribution sites can maintain social distancing. This is for the protection of families, staff and volunteers.
