School is closed for students on Wednesday, October 27 for a teacher workday.

Last Week of Quarter 1:  The quarter ends on Monday, October 25.  Report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, November 5.

Attendance notes:  When your child is out of school, please send a note with him/her when they return to school to give to his/her 1st period teacher or email Ms. Dixon at ladixon@wcpss.net so that the absence can be coded correctly.  The note should include your name, your child’s name, the date(s) of the absence, the reason for the absence and your phone number.  Emailed notes must come from the parent’s email account.

Sick Students:  Please check in with your student before sending them to school each day.  Students who do not feel well may not come to school.  We continue to have a large number of students in our care center daily, many before 8:30am.

Parents of Walkers:  Please talk with your child about being a good community member and neighbor.  Students who are walking should stay on sidewalks or the greenway path.  They should not walk in yards or driveways of houses around our school.  Please remind them not to throw trash in yards and to be mindful of their noise level as families may have sleeping or napping babies when our children are coming to or going from school.

Pumpkin Contest:  West Millbrook teachers are so creative and many of them designed pumpkins for our annual contest.  Help us pick the best one!  Vote HERE.

Considering a magnet high school?  The magnet application window is now open!

Costumes:  Students may not wear costumes to school.  We’ve shared this with students but are also asking parents to be aware of what your child wears to school each day.  Thanks!

    Message from Dan Calhoun:

This year, our WMMMS athletes and booster club are trying something different to raise funds needed to support programs. With the pandemic, as well as having no home fields due to construction, we needed to think about different ways to rebuild our income streams to ensure athletes this year and in years to come will have the necessary equipment, new uniforms and assistant coaches!

We are running a SnapRaise campaign for the month of October, and if you are inclined to donate, I would appreciate your support. Click here to donate - https://www.snap-raise.com/v2/fundraisers/153399/participants/9158116#/

    From Wildcat Athletic Boosters:

    First we want to start with a tremendous THANK YOU to everyone that has donated, shared their link and helped raise awareness about our WMMS Athletic Booster Club fundraising effort! We were unsure about how optimistic to be… and are excited and humbled by the contributions. This fundraiser will run for 2 more weeks and we ask you to consider this action;

    • Please post the link to your student athlete donor page, or this one for West Millbrook Athletics - https://www.snap-raise.com/v2/fundraisers/west-millbrook-ms-fall-sports-2021#/ to your social media platforms. Our hope is to cast as wide a net as possible - we don’t want our core parents/community to do all of the heavy lifting! This kind of fundraising works best when many, many people can donate a tiny amount - that’s how it adds up!

Again - thank you for all you are doing to help rebuild our athletic support at West Millbrook - our student athletes today and in the future are so grateful!

A big Congratulations to our Girls Soccer team!  They are now 4-0 for the season and won their last 2 games 7-0.

All students will need to bring their Wake County Chromebooks as well as earbuds or headphones on Thursday.  If you have any specific questions, reach out to our testing coordinator Chelsea Lopez at clopez@wcpss.net.

Vandalism and Theft:  I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to parents who talked with their children about the recent theft and vandalism that occurred at our school due to a TikTok Challenge.  We experienced a dramatic decrease in these incidents this past week, and I attribute it to parents conveying their values and expectations to their children.  However, we had two incidents of soap dispensers ripped off the wall in the bathroom and stolen, so I am asking families once again to talk with their children about how theft and vandalism do not reflect our school’s culture or our families’ values.  Theft and vandalism cost our school money and soap and soap dispensers are not readily available due to the nationwide incidents so we are not able to easily replace these items.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Interims:  All grades were finalized in PowerSchool for the interim reporting period last Friday.  Please log in to PowerSchool to view your child’s grades at the midway point of the quarter.  This is an excellent time to be certain your student is making the academic progress you expect.

School is closed for students on Thursday for a teacher workday.  Our faculty will engage in professional learning on Thursday. Classes resume on Friday at 8:15am.

IREADY Assessments:  On Wednesday, September 15, 2021, all students at West Millbrook will be taking the iReady reading diagnostic. This is a county-wide, universal screener to determine current reading levels of all students. It is important that each child takes their time and does his/her best so we can have accurate data to support them throughout the school year. All students will need to bring their Wake County Chromebooks as well as headphones for this diagnostic. If you have any specific questions, please reach out to Chelsea Lopez at clopez@wcpss.net or Kelly Denny at kdenny@wcpss.net

Student Leadership Opportunity:  Year 2 and Year 3 students who are interested in leadership opportunities on campus should consider becoming a DIPLOCAT! The students in this group help lead tours, speak at open houses, and host 6th grade orientation. If your student has excellent communication and self-management skills please encourage them to participate.

Students who are interested in serving as Diplocats this school year should let their counselors know by Thursday, September 16. These students will be invited to an interest meeting on September 17. Following the interest meeting students will complete a questionnaire and participate in an interview round. Selected students will be notified in early October. If you have questions, please contact Jessica Collins (jcollins3@wcpss.net)

Face Coverings are required while indoors in all WCPSS facilities.  Please make certain your student comes to school with a mask (or two)!   Face coverings must cover the nose, mouth and chin.  Students have done a fantastic job wearing face coverings appropriately and we only needed to provide gentle reminders!  Thank you for working with your student about this important safety measure as well all work together to maintain in-person learning and to reduce the number and length of quarantines!
