• Ms. Aman's September 12 Family Message

Posted by Kelly Aman on 9/12/2021 7:00:00 AM

School is closed for students on Thursday for a teacher workday.  Our faculty will engage in professional learning on Thursday. Classes resume on Friday at 8:15am.

IREADY Assessments:  On Wednesday, September 15, 2021, all students at West Millbrook will be taking the iReady reading diagnostic. This is a county-wide, universal screener to determine current reading levels of all students. It is important that each child takes their time and does his/her best so we can have accurate data to support them throughout the school year. All students will need to bring their Wake County Chromebooks as well as headphones for this diagnostic. If you have any specific questions, please reach out to Chelsea Lopez at clopez@wcpss.net or Kelly Denny at kdenny@wcpss.net

For Year 2 Families:     NC State Law mandates that all rising 7th graders have their TDAP and Meningococcal vaccines.  Please return immunization records showing TDAP and Meningococcal vaccines to our data manager Ms. Dixon. Immunization records may be emailed to Ms. Dixon at ladixon@wcpss.net.  Students who have not submitted the required vaccines by September 22 will not be permitted to attend school until the vaccination records have been submitted.

Student Leadership Opportunity:  Year 2 and Year 3 students who are interested in leadership opportunities on campus should consider becoming a DIPLOCAT! The students in this group help lead tours, speak at open houses, and host 6th grade orientation. If your student has excellent communication and self-management skills please encourage them to participate.

Students who are interested in serving as Diplocats this school year should let their counselors know by Thursday, September 16. These students will be invited to an interest meeting on September 17. Following the interest meeting students will complete a questionnaire and participate in an interview round. Selected students will be notified in early October. If you have questions, please contact Jessica Collins (jcollins3@wcpss.net)

Dance Company is an after-school performance group that dances at various events at West Millbrook throughout the year. Students meet once a week on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00 to learn and rehearse choreography. Students must audition to be a part of Dance Company. Students in any grade level may participate. It is recommended that students have some dance experience before auditioning but it is not required. Auditions for the 2021-2022 School Year will be held on September 22nd from 3:30-5:00 in the multipurpose room. Email amaxwell@wcpss.net with questions

School Pictures: It's time to share our smiles.  Picture Day is Tuesday, September 21.  Students will take pictures during their math class.  Students will be allowed to remove their face covering to take their picture.

Ordering packets will be sent home with students this week.  If ordering online, please use the following code.  Picture Day ID: EVT46C499

If you have any questions, please contact Bridget Rogers, ext. 24296 or brogers@wcpss.net

Face Coverings are required while indoors in all WCPSS facilities.  Please make certain your student comes to school with a mask (or two)!   Face coverings must cover the nose, mouth and chin.  Students have done a fantastic job wearing face coverings appropriately and we only needed to provide gentle reminders!  Thank you for working with your student about this important safety measure as well all work together to maintain in-person learning and to reduce the number and length of quarantines!

    Fall Frenzy Postponed

In light of the continuing uptick of COVID numbers, we have decided to postpone Fall Frenzy. We did not make this decision lightly as the Fall Frenzy event is a great community builder and a family favorite. We simply cannot hold an event that may jeopardize in-person learning and extracurricular activities for our students and staff.

  • Ms. Aman's Labor Day Family Message

Posted by Kelly Aman on 9/5/2021 7:00:00 AM

School is closed for students on Monday and Tuesday.  WCPSS is closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday and Tuesday is a teacher workday.  Our faculty will engage in professional learning on Tuesday. Classes resume on Wednesday at 8:15am.

Short but Busy Week:  Please remind your student to listen to morning announcements for information about club interest meetings.  This week Student Council meets on Thursday before school and book club interest meeting is on Friday before school.  Also on Friday during Year 2 and Year 3 lunches, students who are interested in auditioning to be a Diplocat can attend an interest meeting.  Contact Ms. Collins (jcollins3@wcpss.net) for more information.

Visiting Campus:  The front doors of our school are always locked.  Please ring the AIPhone (to the right of the front doors) when you arrive and someone will assist you.   If you are checking your student out, please bring your driver’s license with you.

Also, please note that students who are leaving school early must be checked out prior to 2:45pm.

Student Items:  We are unable to accept items dropped off for students.  Please ensure your child arrives to school with the items/materials he/she needs for that day.  All students receive free breakfast and lunch for the 2021-22 school year so if your child forgets his/her lunch box, lunch is provided.

PowerSchool/Parent Portal Access:  Parents are able to access student grades, attendance and other information through PowerSchool.  If you are new to West Millbrook and do not yet have PowerSchool access as a parent, complete the attached form and send it along with a photo of your drivers license/ID to our Guidance Technician Kaylee Stith.  Her email is kstith@wcpss.netParent Portal Access Request  Parent Portal Access Request - SPANISH

Transportation Information:  Thank you for your patience as we continue to adjust arrival and dismissal procedures to accommodate the significant increase in the number of families who are bringing their child to school this year, and as we work with transportation regarding bus arrival and departure times.  Carpool times have significantly decreased and bus departure times continue to improve.  Bus arrival times are consistently occurring before our school day begins.

Carpool:  During morning carpool, all cars should remain on the right curb.  Students may exit cars at 7:50am.  We have extended the unload runway so please follow instructions from staff on carpool duty about where/when to unload.  Students should exit the cars promptly.  Cars are not permitted to pull out of the carpool line during morning carpool.

For afternoon carpool, please remind your student to be alert and watching for your car.  Once your student is safely in your vehicle, pull completely into the left lane and exit campus.  Do not remain in the curbside carpool lane once your student is in your vehicle.  This procedure allows us to fully utilize the carpool lane.

For both am and pm carpool, pull all the way forward in line.  Please do NOT block the entrance to the bus lot if you are waiting in the carpool lane on Strickland Road.  Please do not block side roads or private driveways on Strickland Road while you are in carpool.

Walkers:  All walkers should enter campus from the Six Forks side of campus or through the back path.  We do not have a walk zone towards the Falls of Neuse side of campus so walkers should not be accessing campus from that direction.  This is a significant safety issue.  Walkers crossing Strickland Road must use the crosswalk.  Walkers should access campus from the Six Forks side and walk up the cafeteria parking lot driveway.  Walkers are not permitted to walk up the main driveway.

Bus Info:  District transportation information is available at Transportation Information.  Bus routes are posted and may be viewed at West Millbrook Bus Routes.   Make certain that you check these websites regularly as information is often updated.

Special Transportation  The cafeteria parking lot is for special transportation vehicles and families only.  If your student does not receive special transportation, please use the carpool lane at the front of campus.

Questions about transportation may be directed to Bridget Rogers brogers@wcpss.net or 919 870-4050 x 24296.

Student Messages:  Please make certain you’ve made after school transportation arrangements with your child before our school day begins.  We are happy to assist you with an emergency message but are unable to take routine messages for students.

Union Bank has asked us to remind families that they may not park in the bank parking lot or use the bank as a drop off or pick up for students.  The bank reported that families blocked their drive through lanes and prevented customers from conducting bank business.  As indicated above, walkers are not permitted to access campus from the Falls of Neuse side as we do not have a walk zone in that direction and families should not be parking in that area.

PTA and Booster NEWS:  West Millbrook’s PTA is a vibrant organization that supports all aspects of our school community.  West Millbrook Athletic Boosters support our student-athletes.  My personal ask is that all families join the PTA and that if your child is a student-athlete you support the boosters.  You can join PTA at this link and you can purchase spiritwear at this link.  Information about boosters is available at this link

Questions?   Please reach out to the school’s administrative team (Donyea Daniels ddaniels@wcpss.net, Katie Jones cdjones@wcpss.net, Bridget Rogers   brogers@wcpss.net, Kelly Aman kaman@wcpss.net, Kortney Howerton khowerton@wcpss.net ) with your questions.  We are here to help!
