Dr. Curtis M. Brower

Principal

Curtis Brower has been the proud principal of Powell Center for Play and Ingenuity since 2014. He is a native to Pennsylvania and moved to NC to teach. He has been in education for over 20 years serving as an elementary teacher, assistant principal and principal. Prior to being appointed as the principal at Powell, Dr. Brower served as an assistant principal at two Gifted and Talented WCPSS Magnet schools. He holds a BS degree in Elementary Education from The Pennsylvania State University, a master’s in School Administration degree from the North Carolina State University, and a 6th Year Advanced Education Specialist degree from the North Carolina State University. He recently successfully defended his dissertation in pursuit of his Doctor of Education degree from the North Carolina State University.

Dr. Brower has led Powell to become the first Center for Play and Ingenuity Magnet Elementary school in the nation. Creating a magnet program from the ground level has been a very rewarding and successful achievement in his career. He greatly enjoys watching the arts “come alive” and seeing the students engaged in hands-on learning and design challenges.

Dr. Brower is married to his wife Allison, who is also a WCPSS school administrator. He is the proud father of Andrew, a WCPSS HS student and Caroline, a WCPSS MS student, and the family puppy, Toby. Outside of school, he enjoys watching Andrew play baseball and Caroline dance. Dr. Brower loves to travel and try new restaurants. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, being outdoors, listening to and playing music. Dr. Brower loves his Penn State Nittany Lions and The Pennsylvania State University Marching Blue Band where he played trumpet for four years.

My Play-losophy:

"Play provides an opportunity for growth and development in the whole child. It unites students, teachers and families through experiences where they engage in the 4 C’s of Communication, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration.  Play makes learning fun, doing things differently and more interactive.

PLAY = Powerful Learning And You!"

Mrs. Cristen Laurens

Magnet Program Coordinator

Mrs. Laurens came to Powell in 2005, when her oldest daughter began kindergarten as a magnet student. She has been at Powell since then as a magnet parent, teacher and magnet coordinator. Mrs. Laurens brings to Powell over 26 years of education & design experience.

Mrs. Laurens’ passion for education and design is a journey of orchestrated events that have led her from a degree in architecture (The Georgia Institute of Technology) and a master’s in education (The Colorado College) to creating and starting several small businesses. These experiences have transformed her innovative work as the Magnet Coordinator at Powell Center for Play and Ingenuity. Mrs. Laurens enjoys sharing all the wonderful things we do at Powell with our greater community!

When not at Powell, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters pursuing artistic endeavors, stand up paddle boarding, hiking with their dogs, gardening, yoga, cooking and traveling. You may even be able to spot her at a Hurricanes game!

Mr. Justin Kram

Play Integration Specialist

Mr. Kram is pleased to serve as Powell's Play Integration Specialist, where he works with our fantastic teachers to see that our school theme is present in as many areas of our day as possible. He is a Michigan native who moved here after a long stay in Boston, where Mrs. Kram attended school. Free time is hard to come by these days, but Mr. Kram enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, who both attend Powell. He also has a rather portly dog. Bless her heart. Mr. Kram is an avid reader and falls asleep with a book open every night. He would count his time with his XBox as a guilty pleasure, one which he shares with his children.

My Play-losophy:

In my role I define play as creative problem solving, and I work to open spaces for creative problem solving in our classrooms as much as I can. In my experience, children use play as a vehicle for powerful learning, and it is vital that they are able to exercise this in an academic setting. It is my hope that in the years ahead creators of educational policy will create practice that reflects a deep understanding of children's ability to learn through play.
