Principal

Curtis Brower has been the proud principal of Powell Center for Play and Ingenuity since 2014. He is a native to Pennsylvania and moved to NC to teach. He has been in education for over 20 years serving as an elementary teacher, assistant principal and principal. Prior to being appointed as the principal at Powell, Dr. Brower served as an assistant principal at two Gifted and Talented WCPSS Magnet schools. He holds a BS degree in Elementary Education from The Pennsylvania State University, a master’s in School Administration degree from the North Carolina State University, a 6th Year Advanced Education Specialist degree from the North Carolina State University, and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from the North Carolina State University.

Dr. Brower has led Powell to become the first Center for Play and Ingenuity Magnet Elementary school in the nation. Creating a magnet program from the ground level has been a very rewarding and successful achievement in his career. He greatly enjoys watching the arts “come alive” and seeing the students engaged in hands-on learning and design challenges.

Dr. Brower is married to his wife Allison, who is also a WCPSS school administrator. He is the proud father of Andrew, a WCPSS HS student and Caroline, a WCPSS MS student, and the family puppy, Toby. Outside of school, he enjoys watching Andrew play baseball and Caroline dance. Dr. Brower loves to travel and try new restaurants. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, being outdoors, listening to and playing music. Dr. Brower loves his Penn State Nittany Lions and The Pennsylvania State University Marching Blue Band where he played trumpet for four years.

Dr. KC Berry

Play Integration Specialist

This is Dr. Berry’s first year at Powell and she is ecstatic to be joining our Powell family as our Play Integration Specialist. She is passionate about the important role and impact that play has on children’s development and learning. She has over 13 years of experience working with neurodiverse children in the context of naturalistic play intervention therapies for children with autism spectrum disorders spanning from infancy to adolescence. She is passionate about playing with purpose and helping guide others to do the same with their children and students. Dr. Berry has years of experience training parents and professionals on strategies to engage children and infuse social play throughout daily routines to target a variety of developmental domains. She most recently moved here from San Diego, California, and has lived in 7 different states. She loves a good cross-country road trip! Dr. Berry is happy to be back in North Carolina and loves the people here in Raleigh, but she is not a fan of the summer humidity! On the weekends, she enjoys playing disc golf at local courses around the area and spending time outdoors, usually hiking, with her amazing nieces and nephews.

My Play-losophy:

Play is foundational for learning about the world around us! Play helps us learn how objects work, how people socially engage and how they will respond to our actions and behaviors. The fundamental function of play teaches you the basic concept of cause-and-effect based on the actions you take with objects and people around you. Play is imperative for students’ social-emotional development and should be infused throughout schools for more engaged, active and participatory learning opportunities for all students of all ages! Now, more than ever, play will help our students learn and strengthen their social communication skills that are practiced through engagement in playful activities. Play on, Powell!
