Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Susan Halsey (Far left)
I am excited to begin my 5th year as a fourth grade teacher at Baucom Elementary! Baucom is where two of my children attended, and it feels like a home-away-from-home to me because of the wonderful community and staff. I grew up in Cortland, NY, and received a BA in Psychology from SUNY at Buffalo and my teaching credentials from University of Phoenix with a focus in Bilingual, Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development. I began my teaching combined Kindergarten/First grade class at a small private school in San Ramon, CA. After that my family relocated to Denver, CO where I taught Fourth grade for two years in the Brighton 27J School District. I was blessed to spend twelve years at home with my children and I became a certified yoga teacher, and have spent the past 9 years teaching kids yoga on the weekends. We relocated to Apex, NC in 2016, and I returned to the classroom in the spring of 2018. I have 2 daughters who attend Apex Friendship High School and a son who is at Apex Middle School. We have a border collie named Rocky and a cat named Eleanor Buttercup. My heart is in Apex and I am grateful to serve our community as a teacher at Baucom Elementary School.
Ms. Lisa Lower (2nd over)
Hello, my name is Mrs. Lower, and I am so excited to be one of your child’s fourth-grade teachers this year! We are going to have a lot of fun learning and growing together. I have lived in Apex with Mr. Lower for over 28 years and have taught school for more than 20 years. I have three wonderful boys who all attended AV Baucom. When I am not at school you might find me exercising, chasing my dog Rowdy, working in the garden, or enjoying the company of my friends and family. Cheers to a GREAT year!
Ms. Liz Hogg (3rd over)
I am so grateful that I have been a teacher at Baucom Elementary for twenty-seven years. Baucom is an inspirational school and I can’t wait to start a new year with all your wonderful kiddos! My educational background is that I received a BA in English from SUNY Albany and I received my teaching credentials from Central University in Durham. I subbed all over Wake County for almost two years while going back to school at Central University. I learned a lot from that subbing experience before getting hired at Baucom. I also taught in NYC for two years before moving to NC. My daughter went to Baucom and she is twenty-five years old now. She has a real job and can pay her own bills!!! Something that you will learn about me is that I love dogs, especially my sassy Shichon, Cookie Boy!
Ms. Lynn Sweeney (4th over)
My name is Lynn Sweeney. I was born and raised in the beautiful mountains of Western Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school, many years ago, I attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown where I received my BS in Secondary Education with a focus in Mathematics.
Although life was good in the Allegheny Mountains, Mr. Sweeney had a job opportunity as an aircraft technician in RTP, NC that he couldn’t refuse. It was twenty-five years ago that we decided to relocate to Cary, NC. Today, we enjoy being empty-nesters as our three children have grown to be successful adults. Our older son lives in the Dallas area, our daughter lives in Cary (right across the street from us) and our younger son lives in Charlotte.
I spent some time in the corporate world in the data management business in the late 90s and early 2000s, but in 2004, I decided to return to education. I was hired as a teacher assistant here at Baucom in 2006. I fell in love with this wonderful school and community. After 4 years as a teacher assistant, I decided to add Elementary Education to my teaching license. Fortunately, I was able to remain at Baucom as a teacher. This year will mark my13th year as a 4th grade teacher. (I love it that much!)
When I am not teaching, I enjoy traveling, camping, walking/hiking, hanging out with my German Shepherd, Sam, playing Pokemon Go or relaxing around a campfire with friends/family. I keep busy making scented candles, canning vegetables, salsa and soup and restoring my 1957 Chevy Two-Ten Sedan that I recently inherited. Fun Fact: It sat in a barn for over 40 years. We worked hard to get it back on the road. Maybe someday you’ll see us cruising around in it!
