Ms. Kristen McCollum

Greetings Hawks! My name is Kristen McCollum and I serve as the Administrative Intern for this school year. As a native North Carolinian, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Winston-Salem State University. After graduating college, I was accepted into the Greater New Orleans region of Teach for America and was placed at ENCORE Academy where I taught 4th - 6th grade. While at ENCORE Academy a fellow teacher and I combined our passions, and founded and led two after school programs: a performance flag and dance team and "Strong Like a Girl"; a 2nd through 8th grade girl's empowerment group. After two years at ENCORE Academy, I transitioned to Morris Jeff Community School, also in New Orleans, where I taught 4th grade. I relived my childhood by served as the assistant basketball coach to the 6th and 8th grade girls teams. In the last year, I moved back to my home state of North Carolina to attend NCSU to obtain a Master's of School Administration. During that time, I worked as a Before School Care Coordinator for WCPSS. I am excited to join the Hawk Family as a part of the founding staff at Hortons Creek Elementary this year.
