International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

  • IB World School In January 2003 Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary became the first school in North Carolina to be authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization as a Primary Years Programme. The authorization followed three years of implementation and training culminating with a two-day visit by representatives from the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Since authorization, the program has grown and flourished. Every five years the school has an evaluation visit from the International Baccalaureate organization to ensure that the program is growing and developing and that the standards were being maintained. Visitors have found the school to be rich with the philosophy and principles of the IB and commended the school on its continued improvement and commitment to the IB ideals.

Farmington Woods IB/PYP believes that the PYP is the best education for all children; therefore we continue to seek ways to strengthen the program and nurture students who are excited about a lifetime of learning.

The IB Primary Years Programme, for students aged 3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

    The Programme

    • Encourages international-mindedness in IB students
    • Encourages a positive attitude to learning by engaging students in inquiries and developing their awareness of the process of learning so that they can become lifelong learners
    • Reflects real life by encouraging learning beyond traditional subjects with meaningful, in-depth inquiries into real issues
    • Emphasizes, through the learner profile, the development of the whole student – physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically

The IB Primary Years Programme frames the learning activities of the school community. Typically, the framework is flexible enough to incorporate national curriculum, requirements. It is used in national and international, state and privately funded schools.
