WECHS Principal's Weekly Message 3/3/2023

Happy Friday! 

 

We were excited and happy to welcome our new 9th graders and families last night for the 2023-2024 school year. Thank you to all the staff and student volunteers who made this event successful. The welcome night presentation slides are on our website homepage. If you are a new family reading this message, we will answer and post the remaining Q&A soon. 



Tuesday, we have Express Bus Routes due to a traditional calendar workday.



Tuesday, ALL Juniors will take the ACT on PHS Campus.

If you want to order a school lunch after the ACT, email Ms. Poole by Monday morning at dpoole2@wcpss.net or 919-212-5802.

All 11th graders will take the ACT on Tuesday, Mar 7, 2023, at 7:25 a.m. on the PHS Campus. Additional details have been provided to the students through email and H.S. Seminar. Please speak with your student about their MyACT account and sending scores to colleges. This process must be completed by March 9.

Next week is the last week of the grading quarter on PHS Campus and half-way through the semester on North campus. WECHS and WTCC will be closed for Spring Break March 13-17, 2023 including the WECHS offices. 

 

A WECHS service club is collecting plastic grocery store bags for a service project. Please bring clean, dry, bags to either campus. The project requires 200 bags to per item to help those experiencing homelessness. The project is similar to those noted in this link.



WECHS Junior/Senior Prom 2023

This year’s theme is The Enchanted Forest and will be held Saturday, April 29th, 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Ticket Price: $45.00 per person (No refunds) Online tickets are on sale through March 24th.

Mark your calendars: WECHS Class of 2023 Commencement ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24th, at 7 pm. Graduation practice (mandatory) is Tuesday, May 23rd, at 1:30 pm. https://www.wcpss.net/graduation

 

Preparation for Graduation: Students can wear the WECHS or WTCC cap and gown to WECHS graduation. Please use this link to purchase the WECHS cap/gown and other graduation items.  Cap and gown orders for WECHS graduation should be put in by March 15.

 

Students participating in the WTCC graduation and the WECHS graduation and plan to use the WTCC Cap/gown still need to purchase the stole, diploma cover, and tassel separately for the WECHS Graduation if they are not buying the WECHS Cap/gown by going to https://osp.osmsinc.com/WakeNC/BVModules/CategoryTemplates/Detailed%20List%20with%20Properties/Category.aspx?categoryid=AG150.

 

 

Wake Tech Fall 2023 Advising and Course Selection

North Campus returning students will complete advising pre-work in the HS Seminar class next week.

 

The week of 3/20, students will meet in group advising with Ms. Graham.  Parents are encouraged to set a meeting with Ms. Graham to discuss student pathways and progress.

 

The week of 3/27, students will meet virtually with Wake Tech advisors.  Parents are welcome to attend these sessions.  Email Ms. Graham to schedule an appointment or for more information.  amgraham1@waketech.edu.



 

Financial Aid for College:  If you have questions like: “How do I follow up with colleges about financial aid?”  “Help! I need help understanding the financial aid package I received.”  Ms. Mayo, our financial aid counselor, is here on Mondays to help.  Please contact Ms. Hennings to schedule an appointment with Ms. Mayo.

The Poe Center for Health Education has shared the following opportunity for March 11, 2023. Young people have long been at the forefront of innovation and social progress. From civil rights and environmental justice to education reform and labor rights, youth have consistently paved the way for a more compassionate and socially just world. We look forward to upcoming WECHS Works Wednesday and Thoughtful Thursday events in March. We have the WTCC Medical Assisting and Health and Fitness Sciences programs scheduled and will add additional sessions soon.

Is your student interested in veterinary medicine? Here are a couple of summer opportunities that are focused on vet careers. NCSU’s VetPAC is offering a summer camp for high school students. Click here for more information. Also, the USDA APHIS allows students to participate in the AgDiscovery Program. This program offers students a unique experience at participating universities to learn more about careers in this area. Click here for additional details.

 

2023 AFROTC Shadow Day at NC State will be held on Wednesday, March 29th.  If your student is interested in meeting with Air Force college cadets and learning about career options, click here for additional information.

 

Campbell University is offering STEM workshops this spring. The workshops are geared toward high school students interested in STEM fields such as engineering and health sciences. There is no cost to students, and a pizza lunch is provided.  More information can be found at their Science Education Outreach website linked HERE. 

 

Is your student interested in participating in an NCTAP apprenticeship?  It’s not too late for students to register for a facility tour. The tours will take place on 2/18/23. Please visit the NCTAP apprenticeship to find out more information and to register.  https://www.nctap.org/events 

 

Is your rising sophomore, junior, and senior interested in attending a fun, interactive, and educational camp? Cooperative Leadership Camp is a five-day overnight camp program hosted by the Cooperative Council of North Carolina. Click here to learn more about this opportunity and how to apply.

    

Wake County EMS is also offering an EMS Club. This group meets on the 2nd Monday of each month from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.  Click here for more information and the application. This opportunity is precious and rewarding. If your student is considering applying for the Wake County WCPSS High School EMT program during their senior or super senior year, this club would be a great asset for them.

   

The Perry Virtual Experience is a free, 2.5-hour, interactive online experience for high school and college-aged students who gender-identify as female or nonbinary and are interested in pursuing careers in orthopedics and engineering. Participants will hear from women leaders in these fields and dive into online mock orthopedic surgery simulations and biomechanics experiments. Click here for current opportunities.

 

Testing

 

ACT

Please do not schedule travel for these dates.

   

 

Athletics

WECHS student-athletes participate in Athletics at Enloe High School, and the new and improved website is now live! 



 

Driver’s Education Registration Jordan Driving 

Visit www.jordandriving.com to sign up.  Click ENLOE to register online.  Currently, the Spring class list is full.  We will announce when the summer classes are posted.  If using Jordan Driving School, students can only take the class at their high school or the designated location (Enloe) as determined by Jordan Driving School.   Payment is not due until the class is confirmed by the Driver’s Education teacher at Enloe, Carolyn Hunter, enloe@jordandriving.com.

Class of 2024 Senior Trip (non-school sponsored)

Class of 2024 Senior Trip to Tanzania!

The information session for this opportunity is Thursday, February 9th at 6:30 pm on google meet. The trip is an 11-day trip to Tanzania (travel days included) planned by Explorica during spring break of 2024. It is a volunteer-based trip where students volunteer in local villages teaching children, building parks, and bringing freshwater access. At the end of the trip, there would be a traditional dinner and wildlife safari excursion. This trip allows students to become active global citizens, experience foreign cultures like never before, and have the experience of a lifetime.
