How do I know if school is closed for weather?
In case of snow or other potentially hazardous weather or emergency situations, we may close or delay school. WCPSS makes the decision after consulting the National Weather Service, local weather forecasters, and area law enforcement.
Schools will be open on their regular schedule unless otherwise announced. As soon as the decision is made, WCPSS will:
- notify local radio and television stations
- update websites' front pages
- notify our parents through voicemail, email, and texts
If the weather is bad enough to make a decision the day or night before, we will do so in time for the 11 p.m. newscasts. Otherwise, a decision will be made at 4:45 a.m.

My child is feeling well and won't be able to attend school. What do I do?
You may call the school office to report your child's absence on the first day they are off school or contact the teacher by Dojo or email. Send in a note explaining the absence when your child returns to school. Please make sure that they are ready for a full day's work before sending your child back to school after an illness. Remember that they may have to cope with PE and recess. If your child is showing symptoms of a fever, vomiting, headache, or rash please keep them home until the illness has passed, and there has been no vomiting or fever for 24 hours. For sore throat, runny nose, coughing, and sneezing, please consider keeping them at home if they are unwell with these symptoms.

What do I do if I have to pick my student up early from school?
To ensure that a child is taken from school only by an authorized person, a note from home must be presented to his/her teacher or office staff or a phone call made to the office before the child is released. When the parent/guardian arrives to pick up their child, they will sign the child out and the office staff will call the student down to the office. We do not dismiss students from the office after 3:15 pm.
