The first few weeks of kindergarten are always exciting. The children are making new friends, visiting specials, learning routines and procedures and how to take care of school tools, and more. Please see below for classroom happenings, dates to remember, special events, etc. Do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

    Curriculum Connections

    Literacy Comprehension

    • We have used a variety of stories (The On Strike book series) to learn about how to take care of our school tools.
    • We have practiced recalling key details of stories.
    • We have and will continue to make connections to stories about emotions, friendship, bravery, and self-confidence.

    Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

    • We have practiced listening for rhyming words, isolating beginning, and ending sounds.
    • We have begun blending words/word parts (syllables) together to make larger words and more. Ex. out-side is outside

    • We will compare objects, describing how they are alike and different.
    • We will sort objects into groups (Putting objects that are alike together).
    • We will practice strategies for measuring height, length, and weight.

    • We will work on how to identify our feelings and use appropriate words and tone to communicate with our classmates when we are upset or sad.
    • We will continue to work on finding solutions to problems that may arise.

    Parent Support

Research strongly supports reading aloud to young children, as it significantly boosts their language development, literacy skills, and cognitive abilities, including vocabulary, memory, and critical thinking. Reading aloud also fosters a positive association with reading, strengthens the parent-child bond, and promotes emotional and social growth. Studies highlight how daily reading, even just a few minutes, can lead to exposure to millions of new words over time, developing a broader vocabulary and a richer understanding of the world, which improves reading comprehension and academic achievement.

Wake County Public Libraries are a wonderful resource for reading materials and have a large variety of books of interest to young children. Did you know your child can get his/her own library card? How exciting would that be?
