    What We’re Learning

    ELA

    • Students began their first unit: Poetry, Poets, and Becoming Writers. They read the first part of Love That Dog and explored key elements of poetry. Next, they will define the characteristics of poetry by studying famous poems and poets.

    Math

    • Students learned about bar graphs, line plots, and frequency tables.
    • They created these graphs and interpreted the data. Next, they will work on multiplicative and additive comparisons, factors and multiples, and finish the month with a focus on area and perimeter.
    • For more information on math you can visit:

    Science

    • Students are learning that energy is a property of matter that has the ability to make things change or move.
    • They are studying five forms of energy and their characteristics.

    Social Studies

    • Students are beginning to learn about rights and responsibilities reflected in the North Carolina Constitution.

    New Chromebook Policy

    Dear Hilburn Families,

Beginning next week, all 3rd–5th grade students will keep their devices at school instead of bringing them home.

This change is a site-based administrative decision made to help us take better care of student devices. WCPSS is limiting the number of devices that will be replaced, and keeping them at school will help us ensure they are maintained and available for learning.

It will also allow us to guarantee that devices are charged and ready for important school activities such as testing.

Please send your child’s charger to school so that it can remain there with the device.

Thank you for your support in helping us care for our resources and set students up for success. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Huntley or Mrs. Gruenewald, our MTAC chairs.
