    FPDE families,

    The end of the school year is upon us! In four short days, the school year will come to a close. Thank you for your partnership this year in both face to face and virtual learning. I am proud to be your child’s principal and can’t wait until the start of the 2021-2022 school year. To our 5th grade students, I wish you well as you embark upon your middle school journey.

    5/9 Family Message

    Thank you for honoring our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. It was very much appreciated.

    Face Covering Update

    Effective immediately, the face covering requirement for outside has changed. Students cannot be required to wear face coverings outside. HOWEVER, the mask requirement remains indoors and on school transportation. Below you will find the official wording from WCPSS.

    • Based on new guidance issued Wednesday by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), face coverings are now optional while outdoors. Face coverings are still required for everyone ages 5 and older and while indoors and on school transportation. 
    • This means students and staff will not be required to wear face coverings outdoors for recess, classes held outdoors, outdoor PE classes, outdoor eating, and similar small gatherings. 
    • Students may choose to wear a face covering outdoors but a school or staff member may not require it. 
    • NCDHHS still recommends that anyone who is not vaccinated continue to wear a face covering when they are closer than six feet to another person, even when outdoors. However, this is a NCDHHS recommendation and not a requirement.

     We recognize that we will have some families that want their child to continue to wear the face covering outside and others that do not. Please communicate with your child's teacher your preference. You can also email/dojo your families to ask their preference. Since face coverings ARE required indoors, all students will be required to wear their face covering inside and on school transportation.

    Reading in the Pines-RESCHEDULED for APRIL 22nd-Mark your Calendar:

    Back by popular demand! We will hold our second Virtual READING IN THE PINES NIGHT on Thursday, March 18th beginning at 6:45pm. Staff will read books for three 15-minute time slots. (6:45 – 7:00, 7:00 – 7:15, and 7:15 – 7:30). See the link to access the book titles and the google meet link.

    Virtual Academy 21-22

    The registration window for next year’s Virtual Academy will be open for approximately 10 days and will begin no sooner than April 22. We will notify you of the specific dates in the coming days.

    Families who attended the WCPSS Virtual Academy this year should note some important points and some differences for the 2021-22 school year:

    Students must commit to attend the Virtual Academy for the entire school year.

    • A one-year commitment is necessary to avoid students having to change teachers, whether in the Virtual Academy or in person, during the year.
    • This will also reduce or eliminate sharing teachers with those attending in-person classes. 
    • The district will reassess this requirement if vaccination programs are expanded to include children of all ages. The district will also re-evaluate registration in Virtual Academy if the COVID-19 pandemic surges again. 

    While a virtual option will be offered for students in grades PreK-3, this is not the ideal learning environment for this age group.

    Certainly, safety concerns weigh heavily on parents’ minds, but the development of academic, social and emotional learning skills needed for this age group is best taught in person.

    Virtual Academy students will be able to participate in extra- and co-curricular activities such as athletics, arts and clubs at their assigned school. 

    Transportation will not be provided because the district does not have enough bus drivers.

    Virtual Academy students will follow their assigned school’s calendar. Students in the Virtual Academy at multi-track year-round schools will follow the Track 4 calendar. 

    • Virtual Academy students enrolled in traditional calendar schools will follow the traditional calendar. Virtual Academy students in schools with modified and single-track year-round calendars will follow those calendars.
    • Students in multi-track year-round schools will follow the Track 4 calendar only. Should the district determine that Virtual Academy students are able to return to in-person learning due to the availability of vaccinations for all students, Track 4 placement for in-person classes should not be expected.

     

    Virtual Academy families must agree to a Statement of Understanding that outlines student expectations involving attendance and engagement. 

    Details will be provided prior to the opening of the registration window. A school may recommend that a child return to in-person instruction if the student is unwilling or unable to meet the stated expectations for the Virtual Academy.

    We will provide Virtual Academy students access to all core curriculum classes and select elective courses. 

    • A list of offerings will be provided prior to the opening of the registration period. 
    • The offering of each course will be subject to sufficient minimum student registration and adequate staffing and other resources in an effort to eliminate teachers having to teach both virtual and in-person students at the same time. 
    • Some courses and classes are dependent on the hands-on learning experiences that are provided through the in-person learning experience and therefore cannot be offered in a virtual environment at this time.

    The Virtual Academy will not be offered in our Early Colleges, Leadership Academies, Alternative Schools, Crossroads Flex High School, and SCORE Academy.

    • Special circumstances at these schools make it difficult to match the programmatic intent of each school with the goal of the Virtual Academy. 
    • The school district is currently exploring potential alternative options for these schools that will support and meet the needs of students and families.
    • The schools are: Mount Vernon Middle School, River Oaks Middle School, SCORE Academy, Connections Academy, Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy, Wake Young Men’s Leadership Academy, North Wake College and Career Academy, Wake STEM Early College High School, Vernon Malone College and Career Academy, Wake Early College of Health and Sciences, Mary Phillips High School, Longview School

    More decisions regarding Virtual Academy offerings will be shared with you over the coming days as we lead up to the window for registering your child.

    The Virtual Academy will not be offered in our Early Colleges, Leadership Academies, Alternative Schools, Crossroads Flex High School, and SCORE Academy.

    • Special circumstances at these schools make it difficult to match the programmatic intent of each school with the goal of the Virtual Academy. 
    • The school district is currently exploring potential alternative options for these schools that will support and meet the needs of students and families.
    • The schools are: Mount Vernon Middle School, River Oaks Middle School, SCORE Academy, Connections Academy, Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy, Wake Young Men’s Leadership Academy, North Wake College and Career Academy, Wake STEM Early College High School, Vernon Malone College and Career Academy, Wake Early College of Health and Sciences, Mary Phillips High School, Longview School

    Changes to On-Site Health Screenings Begin This Week

    Help us keep staff, students and families healthy. Please do not come to school if you learn that you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or are experiencing any of the following symptoms: 

    • Sick or experiencing symptoms of illness
    • 100.4° fever or higher
    • Sore throat
    • New cough
    • New shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Diarrhea or vomiting
    • New severe headache

    We must all do our part to keep our school community healthy. Thank you for your cooperation.


    ​​​​​​​Signs have been posted at the main entrances and other common gathering areas such as gyms and auditoriums, stressing the need for students, staff, and visitors to stay home if they suspect they may be infected or exposed to COVID-19. In addition, there will be reminders during daily announcements, in principals’ messages to families, and during athletic and extracurricular activities. The goal of these changes is to ensure every person who steps onto our campuses for any reason is made aware in multiple ways that they must leave if they suspect they may be infected or exposed to COVID-19.

    Changes to On-Site Health Screenings Begin This Week

    Starting Wednesday, April 7, we will no longer conduct on-site health screenings. In other words, we will not be asking the daily questions or taking temperatures during carpool, when students get off the bus, or when students arrive late. At this time, MASK ARE STILL REQUIRED.

    These steps are being taken to replace current health screening protocols that are no longer required by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. While the goal of our previous screening program was also to keep those infected from being on campus, our data and the guidance from health officials showed the practice could be improved. The CDC never recommended screenings and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services no longer requires it.
