    Principal Message 5/11/2020

This is Elizabeth Battle, principal of North Wake College and Career Academy with announcements for the week.

I want to just take a moment to say thank you to our students, parents, and teachers.  Remote learning has been difficult. We miss the positive, daily, immediate, interactions with each other. We miss the structure of bells and the free time of lunches. We miss group work and project based learning. And even with so much to miss, we have come together as a community. For that I am grateful.  We have two weeks left in year 2019-2020. We have much still to accomplish. Thank you.

Thank you to our students and parents for their well-wishes for Teacher Appreciation week.  The response was wonderful. Please see the padlet for messages. https://padlet.com/ebattle1/xn2yp5lsudlxnk2

The district will review SBOE guidelines and provide directions for schools. Once we have more information for what the guidelines mean for North Wake students and families, we will share them and their implications with our families. Current indications are that there will be no exams. That there will be no 4th quarter grade. 4th quarter work (remote learning)  will factor into the 3rd quarter grade, but only to raise it. Once we have final decisions from the district, we will share them.

We encourage all students to remain engaged. The focus of remote learning will continue to be engagement and feedback while providing the flexibility families need. The final two weeks presents a wonderful opportunity to complete work and improve your third quarter, now final semester, grade. As always, email your student’s teachers, counselor, or administrator if you have questions.

We will be monitoring attendance for online classes.  Students who do not attend will be contacted by our counselors to determine how we can help. We will hold classes until Thursday, May 21.

Device and Technical Support - As you are working with your student, there are resources and support available for your family regarding how to log in and how to use specific digital tools. If you have a technology issue and need help, please contact the Student Help Desk at StudentTechHelp.wcpss.net or by phone weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 919-694-8100.

For our SENIORS!  Cap and gown pick-up is Wednesday, May 13, from 12-3.  Please come to the school, park, and come to a table at the front entrance to receive your cap and gown. We will have lines on the pavement 6 feet apart for you to stand at. We will be wearing PPE equipment. We will collect textbooks at that time and provide you with property from your locker.  Also for seniors, please see a video of our seniors, compiled by Ms. Horton, on our website. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSIIva-KI90&feature=youtu.be

SENIOR graduation! As a modified calendar school, we graduate first.  There are a few of us early colleges with graduations scheduled between May 20 and 22nd. At this time, those traditional graduations are cancelled.  We are working as a group to determine other options. Please stay tuned. We definitely want to celebrate your accomplishments but have to find a way to do so within the constraints of COVID 19. We will find a way.

As always, please e-mail or call me (919-247-4353) with questions and for help. Again, I truly want to thank you for your work, flexibility, and communication during remote learning.

    Principal Message 4/26/2020

This is Elizabeth Battle, principal of North Wake College and Career Academy with announcements for the week.

Thursday and Friday presented us all with a great deal of information regarding the next steps for North Wake Collage and Career Academy and for all Wake County Public Schools. On Thursday, guidelines surrounding grading were presented by the State Board of Education. The district will review those guidelines and provide directions for the schools. Once we have more information for what the guidelines mean for North Wake students and families, we will share them and their implications with our families.

Friday brought the announcement by Governor Cooper that school buildings would remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. NWCCA students and teachers will continue to learn and teach as we have since the start of school closure. We encourage all students to remain engaged. The focus of remote learning will continue to be engagement and feedback while providing the flexibility families need. Students need to use their Wake ID Portal and their WCPSS email to connect with learning and teachers. Not using the Wake ID Portal prevents students from accessing all parts of Remote Learning. Please ask your student to see the work being completed and the feedback being shared. As always, email your student’s teachers, counselor, or administrator if you have questions.

North Carolina approved the distribution of additional resources to families receiving free or reduced-price lunch. The additional benefits will be through the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer Program (P-EBT) to help families buy food during the COVID-19 school closure. Learn more about the P-EBT program on the NC DHHS website.

We realize that many families’ economic and employment situations have changed during this pandemic. Families can apply at any time for free or reduced-price lunch, which may also qualify them for other state and federal benefits. Visit www.wcpss.net/meals to apply.

Please see our schedule for classes on our website. We began classes on April 6. Students will meet for two classes a day and teachers will have office hours everyday at 1 pm.

We will be monitoring attendance for online classes.  Students who do not attend will be contacted by our counselors to determine how we can help.

Students, if you are having any difficulty with remote learning, please let us know. The administrators, counselors and teachers are all here to help and support you as we move through this new learning process. You can email any of us using your WCPSS email. We are also using remind and you can text us via remind.

November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month

November is recognized nationally as "National Homeless Youth Awareness Month” to educate the public about children and youth experiencing homelessness. Each year more than 1.6 million children are homeless at some point in their lives and the number is increasing (The National Center on Family Homelessness). Last year, Wake County Public Schools identified 4,365 children and youth in transition (ie, homeless). The McKinney-Vento Program is a federal program in our district providing services that include school stability and immediate enrollment to improve academic success among students experiencing homelessness.

School and district staff are key to identifying students experiencing homelessness as defined by the federal law. The federal definition of homeless is any student in a temporary living situation due to hardship and includes families that live with others (ie., doubled up) or in hotels. School Social Workers and SAP Counselors are the school contacts for identifying, initiating services and supporting students in transition. For more information, visit the McKinney-Vento site. If you have any questions, please contact your School Social Worker or SAP Counselor. Please mark your calendars.  Our next make-up day is November 12.
