Hello Huskies,

It is great to have the students back and to see our school come alive.  We had a great first week of school!  Thank you, parents, for helping in the many transitions that are needed with students.

There are a few carpool updates and safety reminders for you and your students:

1 - Morning drop off is along the entire backside of the building, not just in the small stretch near the crosswalk.

2 - Carpool drivers are reminded not to enter the bus loop in the morning drop off or afternoon pick up process. This is for safety and to allow buses to get in and out of that lot efficiently. Morning carpool drop off is only in the back of the school, and afternoon pick up is in the staff lot at the front entrance of the school.

3 – Please remind your students to use designated crosswalks when walking through the student parking lot in the mornings and during lunch.

This past week, administrators met with all students during grade level assemblies to review behavior expectations, safety protocols, as well as consequences for violating the discipline policies.  Please take time to review this information found in the WCPSS Student Parent Handbook.  If you haven’t already, please sign the acknowledgement page of the handbook so that students can submit them.

In the assemblies, we reviewed WCPSS mask requirements.  Please partner with us and talk with your child about the importance of the mask covering both the mouth and nose while inside a WCPSS building.  We are off to a great start, but reminders at school and at home will help.

Registration for the October 13 PSAT is ongoing.  Registration fee is $17; however, juniors with a designated weighted GPA can test for free.  Fee waivers are available for juniors meeting eligibility criteria.  You can register your 9th and 10th grade student using the online payment tool by September 17.  Juniors may register for the PSAT by completing this Google Form- https://tinyurl.com/PSATHusky11 by September 17.

Course correction requests have ended, and the focus is now on getting students settled.  We invite you to aid your students in transitioning to the new semester by considering a success plan and how to balance time well.

Picture Days are approaching.  Students should have brought home information regarding purchase options this week that they received in advisory.  Freshmen grade yearbook photos will be Wednesday, September 8.  Sophomore and junior yearbook photos will be Friday, September 10.  Seniors who have not had taken their formal senior portrait photo can do so also on Friday, September 10.

Tuesday, September 14 is Meet the Teacher Night.  This is your opportunity to learn more about the teachers and courses your student has for this semester.  This event is virtual and links for teachers will be posted on the afternoon of September 14.  More details about this event are provided on the “Start of School Information – Events” page.

East Carolina University, UNC Asheville, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, University of South Carolina, UA Birmingham, and University of Alabama are hosting a virtual college fair on Thursday, September 9 at 7:00 pm.  Register at bit.ly/R3NCnight

Counselors will begin conducting senior conferences after the Labor Day weekend.  Senior Conferences will continue until October 8. Seniors are encouraged to bring their completed senior information sheets and any questions they may have to their meeting.  100% of seniors will receive individual planning time with their counselor to accomplish necessary tasks for post high school transition.

The first edition of the senior scholarship bulletin was released this week.  It includes several upcoming deadlines.  Forms are available for seniors who wish to seek school endorsement for the NCSU Park Scholarship and the UNC Morehead Cain Scholarship.  Please encourage your senior to visit the Counseling Corner often for this information and other updates.

Warm regards,

Scott Lyons
