Principal's Weekly Message

Hello, Huskies,

For your convenience, we have begun to add information to our start of school area of our HHS website.  As various items become available, such as schedules, parking, and more, you will have 24/7 access to them.  Visit www.wcpss.net/heritagehs often and scroll just below the calendar to view latest updates.

We have had many questions about what Plan B will look like at our school.  We are working hard to get a bell schedule together, but are waiting on additional information.  Plan B will consist of three groups of students who will be on a three week rotation.  Each group will attend school in person for one week and learn remotely for the other two weeks, and this will repeat every three weeks.  When students are in school, they will have a similar bell schedule to the one we have always used, with the exception of a few changes to accommodate health and safety concerns.  When students are learning remotely, they will have “live” virtual instruction through Google Meet for at least 5 hours per week (divided between the student’s four classes).  At Heritage High, this will allow for each class to have a Google Meet for one hour and fifteen minutes per class per week.  This will be a consistent time for each class and we are working on that schedule now.  In addition to the five hours of direct virtual instruction while in remote learning, students will have at least four hours per day of individual or virtual group work to complete.  Work will be graded and feedback provided.  We will keep you updated as we have more information.

Students who took AP exams in May can now go to apscore.collegeboard.org/score to see their results.

Families interested in utilizing the virtual academy option for the upcoming year have until Monday July 20 to register.  Go to www.wcpss.net/virtual-academy to access the registration link.  You can also view the open house event if you missed it on the same web page.

The state immunization law requires that all students, including those participating in the virtual academy, are up to date with immunizations by the first day of school.  For us, this is August 17.   There are no extensions for this date.  Seniors are now required to have the meningococcal vaccine.  Also, for Seniors a 2nd meningococcal vaccine may be required for students by 17 years of age or entering 12th grade. Please consult your doctor to see if you meet this requirement. You are encouraged to immediately check with your doctor to ensure your child is up to date and provide the school with an updated copy of the shot record.  If you do not have a healthcare provider, you can call 919-562-6300 to schedule an appointment at the Health and Human Services Northern Regional Center.  Please do not delay in providing this information to our school.  You can email the records to pjenks@wcpss.net, fax to 919-670-4212, or drop off records in the designated box at the front of the school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8am to 3pm.  Full details will be available in the Start of School section of the HHS website.

Seniors can now schedule appointments for senior portraits by going to prestigeportraits.com  View all package options as well as set up times.

Abbreviated summer office hours are Tuesday and Wednesday, 8am – 3pm.  You’re encouraged to call the office first. If you need to reach someone, you may leave a message at our main number 919-570-5600.  As a reminder, our regular staff is on summer break.  We are understandably experiencing an increase in inquiries about various start of school needs.  Because of reduced staff, you may experience extended wait times for a reply.  You are encouraged whenever possible to visit our website initially as this may offer clarity or even answer general questions.

If you haven’t already, please visit the district’s “Return to Campus” website.  You can access it from our school website and click on COVID 19 Update or go directly to www.wcpss.net/returntocampus.

Please mark your calendar for these virtual events:

Tuesday, August 11:  Senior Orientation

Wednesday, August 12:  New Student Orientation, Parent Orientation, Senior Info Night

If your child has completed the Driver’s Education program and received a completion certificate, you may request an appointment for a Driver’s Eligibility Certificate. Send email to dcwilliams@wcpss.net to get started.  You may visit full instructions in the Start of School section of our school website.

Warm regards,

Scott Lyons
