Maverick Message for October 11, 2024

 

Spirit Wear Shop: Our massive spirit wear shop is finally live! Available items include t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, jammies, shorts, and much more. Items are available in multiple colors with lots of options for logos and mascots. 

 

Recruitment Season: The early college application opens on Monday, October 14 and we are looking for around 65 fabulous current 8th graders to join our student body for the 2025-26 school year. If you know of anyone, please direct them to our website for information and to register for a tour or an upcoming open house. Current early college students do not need to reapply to stay at WECIB. 

 

Upcoming Pre-ACT and PSAT: On Wednesday, October 16, All sophomores will take the Pre-ACT and all juniors will take the PSAT. Please ensure that students get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast that morning, and be on time to school. They will need their laptop for these tests. 

 

Gift Card Drive: Monday, October 14 - Monday, November 11. Student Services is hosting a Gift Card Drive to support WECIB families during the holiday season. We are accepting gift cards from Walmart, Target, and Food Lion, and any amount is greatly appreciated. Our goal is to provide assistance to our WECIB community as we approach the holidays. Please drop off gift cards at the main office.

 

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) - Applications are currently being accepted for students interested in Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM). Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) is the process by which a student may earn credit for a high school course by demonstrating a deep understanding of course content, without course enrollment or seat time. The application period is October 14 - December 13. Parent information slides.

 

Picture Day Make-up Opportunity: If your child was absent on Picture Day or would like a retake, please encourage them to attend the make- up session during the second period in RTP 1 auditorium on October 24. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Ms. Miranda. 

 

Senior Portrait Make-up Opportunity: We know some seniors were unable to schedule an appointment at the Prestige studio. To ensure their photo is included in the yearbook. Seniors will have an opportunity to take their portraits in a drape or tuxedo on campus November 4, during the second period.  Please review the following link for additional details. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Ms. Miranda. 

 

The PTSA needs your help! Our Capital Drive is ending soon! And we need your help to reach our goal of $10,000! So far, we've raised $3,490, and every dollar counts. Your contributions directly support our school community. Plus, everyone who donates will be entered into a raffle to win an exciting gift basket! The drive ends on October 25, so let’s come together and make a difference. Please see this flyer for more information; page 2 of the document provides an explanation of what the PTSA would like to fund. To donate, look for the “Unfundraiser” section on the first page. Support Our New Drama Club! We're excited to announce the launch of our drama club and our inaugural play, and we need your help! Our drama club is seeking donations to bring our vision to life. From costumes and props to set design materials and lighting equipment, we have a wish list of items that will enhance our production and provide an enriching experience for our talented young actors. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a big difference. Join us in fostering creativity and passion for the arts in our community! Thank you for your support!

Hurricane Helene Relief Drive:  Our students are facilitating a relief drive to benefit residents of western North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene. Please consider donating any of the following supplies: paper towels, hygiene products, bottled water, hydration packs, baby formula, batteries, diapers, heavy duty trash bags/contractor bags, soap, and canned food/non-perishables. All donations can be taken to Ms. Carey (room 203), Ms. Gomes (room 254), or the front office. 

 

Exam and Testing Schedule for the Year: To help students and families plan, we have created a testing schedule for the year. This includes Pre-ACT, PSAT, ACT, Workkeys, Final Exams, AP Exams, etc. Please use this document to add dates to your calendar. Please check the document periodically in case we make any adjustments. 

 

Family Fall Festival: We are hosting our annual Family Fall Festival on Friday, October 25 from 3 PM- 6PM. There is an entrance fee of $5, which will include popcorn and a drink. All games and activities are included with the entrance fee. We will have food trucks (Jam Ice Cream, The Pyramids, Tacos Las Gringas) and concessions available. Kids 5 years old and under are free! Please put the date on your calendar. More information is coming soon. 

 

Have experience with henna? WECIB's Sophomore Student Class Council is planning our 3rd Annual Fall Festival, and they're looking for parent/community volunteers. If you have experience applying henna and you're willing to donate materials or volunteer time to apply henna at the festival on October 25th, please email Ms. McCaslin (dmccaslin@wcpss.net).

 

Coffee with the Principal is Rescheduled: Coffee with the Principal is rescheduled for Friday, October 18. We will meet in the school cafeteria but you can also participate virtually. Please bring your own coffee (BYOC). We hope you can join us! Video call link: meet.google.com/spq-trch-vcr

 

Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar - For Sophomores Only - Applications are now being accepted. Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar motivates and develops future leaders through a program designed exclusively for high school sophomores. The location of the seminar is TBA. The HOBY Leadership Seminar is an excellent opportunity to learn powerful leadership skills by interacting with dynamic leadership instructors and like-minded students from across the state. WECIB will select one student to attend the seminar. Application link

Governor’s School: WECIB Application Period - September 23 - October 25, 2024. The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. It is open to juniors only (exceptions are made for sophomores in the following areas: Dance, Choral Music, and Instrumental Music). A student Governor’s School Interest Meeting will be held on Monday, September 23 during lunch. Students interested should attend. Parent Book Club:  We are excited to invite you to participate in our upcoming Parent Book Club, where we will be reading and discussing *The Anxious Generation* by Jonathan Haidt. This insightful book explores the rising anxiety among today's youth and provides strategies for supporting their emotional well-being. Our book club will offer a welcoming space for parents to come together, share experiences, and gain valuable perspectives on helping our children navigate these challenging times. Anyone is welcome to join. Hopefully, this should give everyone enough time to borrow the book from the library or purchase a copy on your own.

Fall Athletics: As we embark on the fall sports season, we want to showcase the incredible moments and memories from our Maverick athletes! Whether it’s action shots from the field, cheering from the stands, or those candid sidelines snaps, we’d love to include them in our yearbook and on our social media channels. School-Wide Behavior Expectations: We covered school-wide expectations in all classes during the first few weeks of school. At WECIB, we strive to foster a positive school culture that ensures a safe and nurturing environment for learning. Please review and reinforce the slide deck to help us achieve these goals. Thank you.  

 

Forms: These are most commonly requested forms at the beginning of the year. Students must turn in a new form each year. 

 

Student Handbook: Here is our student handbook. Much of what students and parents need throughout the year is referenced in the handbook. 

 

New and Experienced Carpool Users (Including families that use bus transportation): With bus transportation being somewhat unreliable, there will likely be new drivers in the carpool loop that are unfamiliar with our process. Given this, we ask all families to familiarize themselves with our processes for carpool:

  • Videos that explain our process 

  • Be sure you are always entering and exiting campus at the light at the intersection of Watkins Road and Chapel Hill Road.

  • As you line up in the queue prior to dismissal, cars should line up in both lanes and zipper merge (like you would in a double-laned fast-food drive through line).

  • We ask that everyone be careful of their speed once on campus and be watchful of pedestrians and other vehicles.

  • Be patient with each other. It may be someone's first time picking up in carpool and they are unsure of the process.

  • Drop off and pick up is always at the main entrance to the Lilly Building. Do not drop off students at any other location on campus, including the parking lot unless parents are coming into the building. 

  • Watch for pedestrians that may be crossing the street in places other than crosswalks.

  • Watch your speed. 

  • Pull all the forward and close the gap between cars. 

Thank you for your patience and understanding of our protocols as we work to keep things safe and efficient. 

 

Afternoon Carpool Pickup: Unless students are in a supervised after school activity (e.g., 5th Period), students should be picked up by 2:15. Students are not allowed to hang out on campus unless under the direct supervision of a teacher for an after-school activity. 

  • Carpool students needing pick-up after 2:15: Students are allowed to walk off campus to the adjacent shopping center (with coffee shops) with parental permission. Use this form to give permission. Please note that the form should be signed by both student and one parent in the presence of an office staff member. Come to the front office for assistance. If this is not possible, the form should be notarized. 

  • Public Transportation: Some students utilize public transportation (e.g., Morrisville Shuttle), which picks up on campus. Students must wait for the shuttle at the designated bus stop. Pick up times vary in the afternoon and on occasion, it picks up a few minutes before our dismissal. If you would like to authorize your student to take advantage of a pick-up before the end of the school day,  please complete this form and we will keep it on file. The student just needs to check out in the office before leaving. Please note that the form should be signed by both student and one parent in the presence of an office staff member. Come to the front office for assistance. If this is not possible, the form should be notarized. 

 

Wake Tech Warn: Wake Tech WARN is the official emergency alert system of Wake Technical Community College and is used to distribute critical emergency information. In the event of an emergency or inclement weather situation, Wake Tech WARN allows the college to notify students, staff, and registered community members. Parents should go to this link to register for alerts.  If you have registered for this previously, you do not need to register again.
