Principal Message 11 - 21 -22

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you to all who attended the Fall Festival on Thursday evening. It was a huge success. I am absolutely grateful to be a part of a community that understands the importance of coming together to work, learn, and play. I am thankful for each of you.

No School

There will be no school from Wednesday(11/23) to Friday (11/25) of this week. We look forward to your return on Monday, November 29.

Teacher of the Year and Instructional Assistant of the Year

Congratulations to Wiley teacher of the Year Sharon Abel and Instructional Assistant of the Year  Jessica Kohli. Staff nominated Sharon and Jessica for their hard work and dedication to Wiley. They both happen to work in first-grade growing and nurturing young minds. Each of them has been with Wiley for several years. If you get the chance please congratulate them on this accomplishment.

Grading Policy

Linked above is Wiley’s Grading Policy. This information includes Wiley’s policy for homework, classwork & assessments, missed assignments, prevention/intervention, extra credit, and the grading rubric. This information is submitted to the district each year. Minor updates were made as most information included in the document already existed.

Report Cards and Parent-Teacher Conferences

Student Report cards went home last week. If you did not receive your child’s report card, please reach out to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Teachers have also been conducting parent-teacher conferences. If you have not heard from your child’s teacher regarding a conference and you would like to schedule one you should email them personally. At least two conferences a year are required. However, anytime you have a question or concern about your child’s performance, you are encouraged to contact your child’s homeroom teacher to schedule a meeting. Our teachers work extremely hard to accommodate all their families' needs while managing the demands of their own lives. Please keep this in mind as you schedule appointments.

Attendance

As flu season approaches, please make sure you continue to communicate absences to the classroom teacher and data manager. In the event of an absence, you should do one of the following:  1) provide a written note to the classroom teacher upon the child’s return OR 2) send an email to the classroom teacher and data manager (ncwise620@wcpss.net). Teachers will be expected to make communication after 3 consecutive days of absences. However, parents/guardians are still expected to communicate the reason for an absence either via note or email upon the student’s return.

Cecilia Rawlins Fund

Need a holiday gift idea for grandparents or friends of the Wiley community? We think there's no better way to engage the people who love our kids, than a chance at giving to the Backpack Buddies program. It's as simple as passing along a note that asks them to sponsor a family who needs a little extra support this holiday season. Here's where the donations are put to work: $165 pays for a backpack of food every weekend for the remainder of the year and $200 pays for a gift card to help with holiday cheer. We have ambitious goals because we're a community that looks out for one another. Let's broaden the chance for folks to join in our ambition. Donate here.  Remember, your gift goes twice as far now due to a generous donor matching up to $1000 in gifts to CRF this season.

Paving the Way - Legacy Bricks

Do you know about Wiley's Legacy Bricks? These bricks not only create a welcoming walkway to Wiley’s front door but they celebrate students past and present, teachers and staff, community members, and generous local businesses. Each brick is $150 and can be engraved with a message of up to 50 characters. A brick order form is active now until December 31 for early spring installation.

Funds raised by brick sales go to the Wiley Elementary Foundation which works to supplement teacher and staff salaries beyond what the county and state provide.

Fall Festival - Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who made the first Fall Festival on Wiley grounds since 2017 a success! In keeping with Wiley's international focus, this year's Fall Festival had a French Carnival theme, with bounce houses, food trucks, pay-what-you-can pizza, face painters, balloon twisters, band performance, and more!
