Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Burt Batten

Greetings Families!  My name is Burt Batten and I am excited to serve you and your child as Principal of Pleasant Grove Elementary school.

Eleven years ago, I began my work in school leadership at nearby Brier Creek Elementary.  From 2008 to 2016 I worked at Laurel Park Elementary, a multi-track year round school in Apex.  I was honored to open that school as its first assistant principal and then lead it for five years as Principal.  Now, I am excited to open Pleasant Grove Elementary and to support your child's learning.

I am a life-long resident of North Carolina and come from a family of educators.  I completed my undergraduate degree at NC State and have graduate degrees from Wake Forest University and UNC-Chapel Hill.  I am proud to be both a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow. I have worked for Wake County Schools since 1999.  My wife also works for the district as a teacher at Leesville Road High School.  We have two young children, ages 10 and 7, along with a little toy-sized Papillion dog.

My goal is to make Pleasant Grove a wonderful school for your child.  Working together I hope that we can guide our students successfully in their academic growth and development of character. The years our students spend in elementary school are marked by dramatic transformations that are nothing short of heroic! Too often, the significance of what it can mean to learn something new, to understand how to work with peers, to face up to a challenge, to master a skill, or to complete a task independently for the first time can be miniaturized when looked at through the eyes of an adult. With this in mind, I hope to provide your child with an enriching learning environment across all grades Pre K-5.

I look forward to showcasing the outstanding creativity and character demonstrated by students using this website and other activities. Please let me know if I can assist you with any concern or question for your child. You can email me at
