DRMS' Principal Message

Happy Sunday, Dolphins!  This is Kristen J Faircloth, proud principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your December 4, 2022 Family Message.

Welcome to December!  It is one of the busiest times of the year, filled with celebrations, performances, and time with family and friends.  We enjoyed a chorus concert on November 17 under the direction of Ms. Kaitlyn Moore, a dance concert on December 1 led by Ms. Jessica Holloway, and we are looking forward to the band concert on December 6 with Mr. Kelly Durham at the helm.  Our arts department will have a Jolly Jamboree, a culminating performance, on December 14.  We hope to see you there!

Please take a moment to read through the Family Message below, as well as the grade level newsletters, and do not hesitate to reach out if there is any way we can support you.

Quarter 2:  We have several teacher workdays, early release days, and holidays in Q2.  Please place the following dates on your calendars:

  • Monday, December 5 - Early Release Day @ 1:00 PM
  • Wednesday, December 21 - Early Release Day @ 1:00 PM
  • Thursday, December 22 - Begins Holiday and Track Out

Early Release Day:  Monday, December 5 is an early release day. We will be dismissing students at 1:00 PM. Please make plans with your children if they are going home a different way.

Academic Breakfast:  Congratulations to all students who earned Principal's List or Honor Roll in Q1.  We are excited to celebrate students on Tuesday, December 6th, with donuts and a guest speaker.  A huge thank you to the DRMS PTA for providing the donuts.  This brief event is for students only.

7th Grade Counselor Message:  Attention 7th grade families with students in Ms. Hayward's fall Health/PE classes. For our next unit of study in Healthful Living we will be discussing Human Trafficking Safety. NC Senate Bill 279 mandates that all students in grades 7-9 receive instruction concerning trafficking prevention and awareness. All WCPSS students in grades 7-9 will participate in a lesson on Human Trafficking, presented by members of the school Counseling and Student Services staff during one Healthful Living class period. Students will participate in a survey to help staff with identifying high-risk pupils and referring them to assistance resources. The district will honor passive consent regarding opting students out of this lesson. Parents wishing to opt their student out of this lesson must do so in writing to the school principal prior to the presentation of the lesson.

Human Trafficking Objectives to be taught:

Grade 7 – 7.ICR.3.3 Recognize that sexual harassment may contribute to sexual abuse, sexual assault and sex trafficking and the feelings that result from these behaviors.

Additionally, your child will receive a paper copy of a parent letter from Ms. Hayward during Health class. Please review the letter and discuss the upcoming unit with your child. Thank you!

7th & 8th Healthful Living:  7th and 8th grade students will begin the Reproductive Health Unit on December 12, 13, and 14 in Health class for Mr. Capel's and Ms. Hayward's classes. Students received an informational letter 3 weeks ago. Parents who would like to opt their child out of the RHS unit need to email or write a note to their child's Healthful Living Teacher. If the teacher does not receive an opt-out letter, the student will be included in the lessons.  Please see the RHS Parent Letter as reference.

Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School:   Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School will hold its annual Magnet Theme Showcase on Thursday, December 8th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM.  This is an event middle school families don't want to miss!  SRMHS is excited to showcase ALL their extensive programs that make SRMHS one of the most unique high schools in Wake County!

Makeup Pictures:  Makeup picture day has been scheduled for January 26, 2023. Purchases for pictures can be made online or by check. More information will be sent home and on our website in January.  If your student was not present for the first picture day, you will be able to take your photo on the 26th. If you would like to have your pictures retaken, please send your student with the originally purchased pictures on January 26th for Strawbridge.

Meal Benefits:  During the 2021-2022 school year, all students received free school meals supported by federal funding due to the pandemic; however, this funding ended on June 30, 2022. In order to receive free or reduced-price meals for this school year (2022-2023), families need to submit a meal benefits application.

All families must complete an application for the 2022-2023 school year in order to receive benefits. Please allow 10 business days for processing.

For every student that turns in the free and reduced meals application and qualifies, the school also receives federal funds that benefit the students and teachers at the school.

We need you to complete a 2022-2023 meal benefits application so our school can be eligible for extra funding next year. If you have not completed a free or reduced-price meal application and think your child may be eligible, pick up an application at your child’s school or apply online

A student’s status from the 2021-2022 school year will roll over to this current year; however, it only carries them forward for the first 30 operational days or until a new application for the 2022-2023 school year has been processed.

Meal prices for the 2022-2023 school year are below:

  • Breakfast - $1.75
  • Lunch - $3.25
