DRMS' Principal Message
Happy Sunday, Dolphins! This is Kristen Faircloth, proud principal at Durant Road Middle School with your August 7, 2022 Family Message.
We have had an amazing start to the 2022-23 school year! The DRMS staff have been working very hard to prepare our Dolphins and set them up for a successful year. Students have spent the last week building relationships with their teachers and peers, getting acclimated to their classrooms and schedules, and learning more about the curriculum.
Please take a minute to read through the Family Message below, as well as the grade level newsletters, and do not hesitate to reach out with any needs.

Let’s work together to get DURANT ROAD MIDDLE SCHOOL recognized as the BEST MIDDLE SCHOOL in Raleigh!
Breakfast & Lunch: During the 2021-2022 school year, all students received free school meals supported by federal funding due to the pandemic; however, this funding ended on June 30, 2022. In order to receive free or reduced-price meals for this school year (2022-2023), families need to submit a meal benefits application.
All families must complete an application for the 2022-2023 school year starting July 1 in order to receive benefits. Please allow 10 business days for processing.
For every student that turns in the free and reduced meals application and qualifies, the school also receives federal funds that benefit the students and teachers at the school.
We need you to complete a 2022-2023 meal benefits application so our school can be eligible for extra funding next year. If you have not completed a free or reduced-price meal application and think your child may be eligible, pick up an application at your child’s school or apply online.
A student’s status from the 2021-2022 school year will roll over to this current year; however, it only carries them forward for the first 30 operational days or until a new application for the 2022-2023 school year has been processed.
Meal prices for the 2022-2023 school year are below:
- Breakfast - $1.75
- Lunch - $3.25
2022-23 Athletics: Durant Road sports are fast approaching! All students interested in trying out for an athletics team at Durant Road Middle must complete the following requirements:
- Dragonfly - Please see the linked file on how to complete the health forms for athletic eligibility. There are two documents on how to complete this (one in English & one in Spanish).
- Academic Eligibility - Please see the linked document.
- Season Dates - Please see when each season will begin in the linked document. A reminder will be sent out for winter & spring sports when the time arrives.
Students needing a locker due to special circumstances (medical/health issues, equipment, etc.) can make a request to receive one. Lockers will be assigned to individual students, since students will not be able to share lockers. These lockers are made available for student use in storing school supplies and personal items necessary for use at school, but the lockers are not to be used to store items that may interfere with school purposes or are forbidden by school rules. The school retains the right to inspect the locker and its contents to ensure that the locker is being used in accordance with its intended purpose and to maintain a safe, healthy learning environment.
Students will be assigned designated times to utilize their locker throughout the school day. Students will not be allowed to retrieve items from their lockers outside of these designated times. As always, students are expected to follow D.R.M.S. expectations while visiting their lockers during the designated times.
By submitting this request form, you (parent/guardian) acknowledge that you accept the guidelines above and understand that your student(s) must follow all expectations to have and maintain their locker. If not, their locker privilege will be revoked.
***ONLY PARENTS/GUARDIANS can make this request by clicking here to complete the form.

Information Regarding Child Abuse and Neglect: NC Legislators passed a law last year that requires all secondary schools across the state to inform students in grades 6-12 each year about important resources related to child abuse and neglect. It also requires schools to have this information posted in each middle and high school. The attached document contains important information and resources available in our community. WCPSS is committed to the safety and well being of children in our community. If you have any questions about this information, please reach out to your school social worker or school counselor.
7th Grade Immunizations: NC State Law mandates that all 7th-grade students have their TDAP and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines. Please return immunization records showing TDAP and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines by or before July 29th, 2022. Immunization records may be emailed to kbograd@wcpss.net. We appreciate your attention to this mandate.
Thank you for supporting DRMS,
Kristen J Faircloth
