DRMS' Principal Message

Happy Sunday, Dolphins!  This is Kristen Faircloth, proud principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your July 31, 2022 Family Message.

Thank you for an amazing opening to the 2022-23 school year!  We are off to a great start and are very excited to see what the year has in store for our Dolphins!  Our academies were a huge success and lots of fun as students received their schedules, walked their schedule, met our staff members, got acclimated to their classrooms, learned about the curriculum that will be covered this school year, and ended their time with an ice cream social.  We are looking forward to a full week as we continue to orient our Dolphins to the year and ensure they are set up for success.

Please read through the Family Message below and do not hesitate to reach out with any questions and/or needs.

Breakfast & Lunch:  During the 2021-2022 school year, all students received free school meals supported by federal funding due to the pandemic; however, this funding ended on June 30, 2022. In order to receive free or reduced-price meals for this school year (2022-2023), families need to submit a meal benefits application.

All families must complete an application for the 2022-2023 school year starting July 1 in order to receive benefits. Please allow 10 business days for processing.

For every student that turns in the free and reduced meals application and qualifies, the school also receives federal funds that benefit the students and teachers at the school.

We need you to complete a 2022-2023 meal benefits application so our school can be eligible for extra funding next year. If you have not completed a free or reduced-price meal application and think your child may be eligible, pick up an application at your child’s school or apply online

A student’s status from the 2021-2022 school year will roll over to this current year; however, it only carries them forward for the first 30 operational days or until a new application for the 2022-2023 school year has been processed.

Meal prices for the 2022-2023 school year are below:

  • Breakfast - $1.75
  • Lunch - $3.25

Carpool Procedures:  Carpool will run quickly and smoothly if everyone follows the procedures.  Once families enter the school campus, they should take a right and follow the carpool loop to the back of the school for drop-off and pick-up.   Families who choose to carpool in the afternoon should have a carpool number that can be obtained in the carpool loop by staff members.  Students should not be dropped off or picked up in the front of the school.

Student Handbook:  Thank you to the DRMS PTA, all students have/will receive a student agenda.  The DRMS student/parent handbook can be found in the student agenda for reference.

Parent Portal Access:  All parents are encouraged to get a Parent Portal account so you can monitor your student’s grades and attendance. Instructions on getting an account were shared during the academies as well as on our website. If you have already given us the form but not yet gotten access, don’t worry! It takes a while for your information to be entered and for the system to email you.

Bus Transportation:  It is important to ensure that your child has bus transportation if they require it. Please log in to PowerSchool and/or have your child log in to PowerSchool to check their bus route assignment. If there is no bus route assigned and you want your child to be registered for the bus, please go to wcpss.net/busrider and complete the registration form for 2022-23.

Once you have registered, you should receive an email with a case number. This lets you know that the WCPSS Transportation Department has received your request and will work on processing the request. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ralph Chew, 7th grade assistant principal.

7th Grade Immunizations:  NC State Law mandates that all 7th-grade students have their TDAP and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines.  Please return immunization records showing TDAP and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines by or before July 29th, 2022.  Immunization records may be emailed to kbograd@wcpss.net.  We appreciate your attention to this mandate.

DRMS PTA News:  DRMS PTA would like to announce that Devona Cranford has graciously accepted the open position of PTA President for the 2022-2023 school year. With Devona moving into the presidential position, our PTA is in need of a secretary.  The secretary's main purpose is to take meeting minutes at our 1-hour monthly PTA meetings (we typically do not meet during track out). The estimated time commitment is approximately 2 hours per month. Prior experience is not necessary. Please reach out to durantroadmiddlepta@gmail.com.

Thank you for supporting DRMS,
