HELPS Tutoring Opportunity

Our school will be participating in the HELPS 1:1 tutoring model using volunteers. HELPS 1:1 is a WCPSS program in collaboration with the Wake Ed Partnership and Helping Education.

The HELPS 1:1 program equips students with literacy fundamentals in an individual setting. This approach has proven to be one of the most successful systems for improving students’ literacy skills.

  • Builds fluency and confidence.

  • Trained tutors adhere to a research-validated literacy curriculum.

  • HELPS curriculum is structured and scripted.

  • Tutors can be easily trained to implement this program.

Please save the dates for our 24-25 Open House Curriculum Nights

  • Tuesday, September 24, 5:30-7pm: Grades k-2
  • New Date!-Tuesday, October 1, 5:30-7pm: Grades 3-5

Each night, there will be two sessions. Sessions are repeated for parents who have more than one child in a grade level span each night.  Parents only need to attend one session per grade level/child.  For example, if you only have a first grader, you can choose to only attend session 1 and then you are certainly free to leave the event.

Prior to the classroom sessions, the AES PTA will hold a brief general meeting at 5:30pm.

The Importance of Attendance

Did you know that chronic absenteeism - missing 10% (or 18 days) of the school year - can impact your child’s ability to succeed in school? Students who are chronically absent are more likely to face difficulties learning to read by the third grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school. Attending school regularly is necessary for school success, and attendance in school is required by law under the NC Compulsory Attendance Law.

During the 2022-2023 school year, 18.9% of students were considered chronically absent. In the 2023-2024 school year, 10.1% of our students were chronically absent. Please help Apex Elementary continue to improve our attendance, as we want to ensure all our students are set up for success in the future.

What you can do to improve your child’s attendance:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine

  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before

  • Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has their required shots and health assessments

  • Introduce your child to their teachers and classmates before school starts

  • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up – Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.

  • Schedule all medical appointments and vacations when school is not in session.

  • If your child seems anxious about attending school, seek advice from your child’s teacher, school counselor, or school social worker.

  • If your child must stay home due to illness or other reasons, inform the school immediately. You can ask your child’s teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.

Early Check-Out Procedure

As stated in the AES Family Handbook, all early check-outs must be completed by 3:15 p.m. If you arrive after this time, you will be asked to join the carpool line to pick up your student. This is to minimize the traffic in the front office during dismissal and ensure that everyone gets home safely and orderly.

Please enjoy this week’s PTA Bulletin.

Apex Elementary’s Vision: As a community, we will empower and inspire every child to be a confident, compassionate, and creative individual who will reach their potential through meaningful connections and student-centered learning.
