2nd Grade Cogat Information 2024-2025

Second Grade CogAt screening:
This spring, WCPSS will universally screen all second-grade students using the Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT).  The CogAT is used to determine if your child requires differentiated services beyond what is provided in the traditional classroom.  The CogAT is one of many tools used to determine if students can benefit from differentiation provided when identified as Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted.
The CogAT measures general thinking and problem-solving skills. It shows how well students use these skills to solve verbal, math-related, and visual puzzles. These skills develop at different rates for everyone and are important for school success. The test results help teachers plan lessons that support each student’s learning.
The CogAT is just one of many tools used to plan teaching strategies.
 
 
CogAT Overview
The test has three sections, called batteries:
  1. Verbal Battery
    This part measures how well students think and solve problems using words. It also checks how flexible and creative they are with verbal tasks. These skills help with reading, writing, and critical thinking.
  2. Quantitative Battery
    This section looks at how students work with numbers and math concepts. It measures problem-solving skills and creativity in using math strategies. These skills are important for solving problems in math and other subjects.
  3. Nonverbal Battery
    This part uses shapes and figures to test problem-solving skills. Students don’t need to read or use outside knowledge. It checks how flexible and creative they are in solving new kinds of problems.
  4. Composite Score
    This overall score combines the results of the three sections. It shows the student’s overall strengths and abilities for learning.
 
 
How Scores Are Used
Your child’s scores are compared to those of other children the same age. The results help teachers understand your child’s strengths and where they may need extra support.
The Track 4 testing window for the CogAt is March 3-21.
There will be a Q & A session about the 2nd grade screening on Wednesday, February 19 at 8:15 AM in Trailer 806.
