September 6th WFMS Family Message

***Este mensaje se puede ver en español haciendo clic AQUI.***

Good afternoon WFMS families,

New Staff

We are pleased to announce  our new Healthful Living teacher, Mr. Ryan Zimmerman, and Autism Support Special Education Teacher, Ms. Sierra Cobb, who are joining our staff this week.

New Science Hires

We are pleased to announce our new science teachers have been recommended to Human Resources.  Ms. Barrett Winder will begin with our 8th grade science classes on Monday, September 16th.  The second hire for our 7th/8th grade science position will begin in late-September once all paperwork has cleared.  Please note due to our current class sizes and increased enrollment, we are not able to make any class changes at this time.  Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to navigate the hiring process.

Student Conduct

We are pleased with the start of the school year overall.  The majority of our students are making positive choices and following expectations.  We are beginning to see social media conflicts from the community spilling into the educational environment.  While we are monitoring and effectively managing cell phone use in the building, we encourage our families to be involved with their student by routinely checking phones and having conversations with your student about appropriate use of social media and cyberbulling/harrassment.

In addition, we ask that you remind your student the importance of honoring the personal space of their peers and not using fighting as a means to resolve conflict.  If a student has an issue with someone else, have them speak with a counselor or administrator for support.

Meet the Teacher

Our fall “Meet the Teacher” event will be held on Thursday, September 19th from 5:00pm - 6:30pm.  More information regarding this event will be shared next week.  We will also hold a General PTSA meeting at the conclusion of our evening, so save the date and join us to learn more about your student’s classes.

PTSA

The WFMS PTSA is excited to welcome you to the 2024-25 school year. Please consider joining our PTSA. One hundred twelve members of our school family have already joined! Be a part of something special at WFMS this year!

PTSA membership is $10 per person. You can join the PTSA by clicking HERE.

On September 11th, PTSA will deliver "room service" drinks and snacks to our teachers as a celebration of the first few weeks of school. Each teacher was able to order a drink, fruit and two snacks. We are in need of donations of food and drinks to make this service a success. You can sign up to volunteer, donate items or make a monetary donation here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0B49AFAF2FA5FBC34-50829057-ptsa.

Everyone is welcome to join us during the Meet the Teacher event on September 19th for our first General Membership Meeting of the school year. The meeting will be held in the Cafeteria at 6:40pm. We will vote on our 24-25 budget and share important updates about our fall fundraiser.  PTSA will have a table at the Meet the Teacher event on 9/19. We would love to meet you and answer any questions you may have about how the PTSA supports students and staff at WFMS.

Our board meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at 2:45pm in the Media Center, there will also be the option to join via Google Meet. Our next board meeting will be Thursday, October 10. All PTSA members are welcome.

Counselor Corner:

It has been a great start back to school, but this can also be a time of challenge and stress. Sometimes, students may have negative feelings about their ability to succeed at the beginning of something new, especially the start of many new things, like lots of classes, at one time. If you hear your student using negative self-talk about their abilities, like “I can’t…” or “I will never be able to…”, one way to help them reframe that is to help them add the word YET to the end of those sentences. The addition of that simple word adds a hopeful twist and is a reminder to them that they are capable of growth and change

Athletics

Try-outs for football will conclude this week.  Cheerleading will also take place this week.  Students must meet all eligibility requirements to participate.

Please note anyone trying out must have a completed Athletic Participation Packet uploaded into DragonFly for any sport. This can also be found on wcpss.net under athletics.

7th Grade Immunizations

North Carolina law requires that all rising 7th graders must present proof of receiving the Tdap and meningococcal immunizations by September 25th.  Any student non-compliant after the due date will be excluded from school and not allowed to attend until proof of compliance has been submitted.

WFMS must have a copy of your physician's record of these vaccines.  Please contact your physician for more information regarding these immunization requirements.

Immunization records can be emailed to jfleet@wcpss.net or faxed to 919.670.4223 (Attention: Jamal Fleet). If you have additional questions, please contact our Data Manager at 919-554-8440 x22437 or Option 1.

Dual Bus Stop Request

WFMS will begin Dual Bus Stop Request on September 27th for families who have completed all three of the following items:

  1. A copy of the joint custody agreement or a completed joint custody form, if an agreement is not in place. WFMS will have to keep a copy on file.

  2. Verification of the parent address not on file (Ex. Utility Bill)

  3. Both parents will need to complete and turn in a Joint Custody Dual Bus Stop Request Form.

If any of the requirements are not met the request will be denied.

WFMS will then:

  1. Verify that all the above parental information is correct

  2. Verify that both parent addresses are in our school’s base assignment area

  3. Submit the approval request to WCPSS Transportation

Please note: WFMS’s support of the request does not mean that it will be accommodated

WCPSS Transportation's Criteria Review will include:

  1. Confirming both bus stops are in the school’s base assignment area

  2. Determining if there is an existing route and bus stop to support the request

  3. Determining if there is capacity on the bus

If the transportation department can accommodate the request, based upon the conditions above, an email will be sent to both parents approving the request.  A copy of the email will be sent to the school administration.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Harris McDuffie at eharrismcduffie@wcpss.net
