Dear Trailblazer Families,

I trust that you are well and enjoying the fall weather. Speaking of fall, please remember to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night! We "fall back" for daylight saving time.

  • READvolution update  | This is the third consecutive year that our school is participating in the district-wide literacy campaign called READvolution! If your child attended BRES last year you know that collectively, our students read over 2020 minutes! That qualified us to be entered into a drawing last year and we were selected to attend the "Cool School Field Trip" to watch the Hurricanes Hockey team practice at the PNC Arena. It was a memorable experience for the entire Banks Community! This year the READvolution time frame is Monday, Sept. 30 until Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. During Media Specials students will be able to engage in silent reading and record their minutes using the READVolution App. Although we will not qualify for the field trip this year, I am reminding students of the importance of reading regardless of incentives. Research does not encourage the use of reward programs to promote reading, but what we do know that works is allowing students to make their own choices of what they read, having the opportunity to talk about what they are reading, and eliminating distractions so they can relax while they read. Please work with your child at home to ensure that they are developing good reading habits. Each students' personal goal is reading daily for 20 minutes and MY personal goal for your child is for them to develop a life-long love of reading! See the school website for the link to the WakeID Portal and the READVolution App.
  • The NCPTA Reflections  The 2019-2020 theme is PARTICIPATE! Reflections is a 50+ year old National program that encourages the students to explore their creativity through 6 Different Categories. If you would like to enter, please submit a hard copy of the form that you can access through this link,

    https://ncpta.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1920-Student-Entry-Packet.pdf

You must still submit your original ARTWORK and follow the rules which are attached to the Student Hard Copy Form.

Submission deadline for artwork and forms: November 4th

Dropbox in the office or bring to Mrs. Mueller (room 2309). Questions? Please email Ms. Mueller at emueller@wcpss.net. For more information go to   http://www.wakepta.org/reflections-2019-20.html

  • Tuesday is Election Day.  | Please be aware that Banks Road ES is a polling site. This means we will have increased traffic and must be paying close attention as we drive through the carpool area during the day. Carpool students will be dismissed from the cafeteria on Tuesday, rather than the gym. Please watch for the adults who normally direct traffic, as the carpool line will start at the cafeteria entrance. The zipper line will be shorter to allow for cars to line up safely.
  • PTA FUNDRAISER at Zaxby's. | Please join us for a PTA Fundraiser at Zaxby's, at 131 N. Main Street, Fuquay, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 7. Ten percent (10%) of the sales will be returned to Banks Road ES!
  • SATURDAY SCHOOL - November 16. | Mark your calendars now for Saturday school for Tracks 1, 3, and 4. This is to replace one of the days lost to the Hurricane. We will not serve breakfast or lunch, so please pack a snack for your child that day. School will begin at regular time: 9:15, and end at 12:45. Buses will run their routes as normal in the morning, and will pick up at school beginning at 12:45. Mark your calendars for the next Saturday school make up day on December 7.

Make it a great week!

Yours,

Jan Hargrove, Interim Principal
