The Trailblazer Times   10-26-2019

Greetings Trailblazer Families,

I trust you are all well and enjoying the nice weather outside today. Just a reminder, please make sure that you update any addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses with Ms. Blankenship, our Data Manager. We want to be sure we can contact you with important information related to your child and school events.

  • READvolution update  | This is the third consecutive year that our school is participating in the district-wide literacy campaign called READvolution! If your child attended BRES last year you know that collectively, our students read over 2020 minutes! That qualified us to be entered into a drawing last year and we were selected to attend the "Cool School Field Trip" to watch the Hurricanes Hockey team practice at the PNC Arena. It was a memorable experience for the entire Banks Community! This year the READvolution time frame is Monday, Sept. 30 until Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. During Media Specials students will be able to engage in silent reading and record their minutes using the READVolution App. Although we will not qualify for the field trip this year, I am reminding students of the importance of reading regardless of incentives. Research does not encourage the use of reward programs to promote reading, but what we do know that works is allowing students to make their own choices of what they read, having the opportunity to talk about what they are reading, and eliminating distractions so they can relax while they read. Please work with your child at home to ensure that they are developing good reading habits. Each students' personal goal is reading daily for 20 minutes and MY personal goal for your child is for them to develop a life-long love of reading! See the school website for the link to the WakeID Portal and the READVolution App.
  • The NCPTA Reflections  The 2019-2020 theme is PARTICIPATE! Reflections is a 50+ year old National program that encourages the students to explore their creativity through 6 Different Categories. If you would like to enter, please submit a hard copy of the form that you can access through this link,

    https://ncpta.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1920-Student-Entry-Packet.pdf

You must still submit your original ARTWORK and follow the rules which are attached to the Student Hard Copy Form.

Submission deadline for artwork and forms: November 4th

Dropbox in the office or bring to Mrs. Mueller (room 2309). Questions? Please email Ms. Mueller at emueller@wcpss.net. For more information go to   http://www.wakepta.org/reflections-2019-20.html

  • Girls on the Run | Girls on the Run meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 - 5:00 pm this fall for students who are registered.  The dates include November 4 - December 11, 2019. Please note that GOTR will NOT meet on Nov. 11, Nov. 25 or 27. Their final meeting will be on December 14 during a 5K Fun Run in Cary.

We appreciate our volunteers! If you were a registered volunteer last year, you must re-register every year. The deadline to reactivate your registration is Thursday, October 31, 2019. If you think you may volunteer in the future (classroom, chaperone a field trip, etc.), please come in to register. It can take up to 2 weeks to get the background check completed. We have a need for volunteers to help shelve books in the Media Center. If you are available to help, please contact Ms. Floyd. She will put you to work for sure!

A reminder from last week: Remember to sign in at the office if are joining your child for lunch or to volunteer in the classroom. Please remember to park in the designated parking spaces when visiting Banks Road. We need to keep the bus loop open for emergency vehicles in case we have a school emergency. Finally, remember to hang up your cell phone when moving through carpool. Safety first! Have a great week!

Yours,

Jan Hargrove, Interim Principal
