Attendance
At Fuquay-Varina High School we value the attendance of our students. We recognize that there is a direct correlation between a student’s attendance and their academic performance. Each minute of the school day provides opportunities for valuable learning that support our school mission to challenge students academically and to graduate every student on time in four years.

Attendance Policy
FUQUAY-VARINA HIGH SCHOOL
Attendance PolicyStudent Attendance
Attendance in school is central to educational achievement and school success. School
Attendance is required by state law for all children between the ages of seven (7) and sixteen (16).
Parents must ensure that students attend and remain in school daily.
The principal must assure adherence to attendance rules and regulations and notify parents of
their responsibility under the compulsory attendance law. The teacher must monitor and report
student absences on a daily and class basis and follow all rules and regulations concerning attendance.ATTENDANCE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL IS TAKEN DAILY, CLASS BY CLASS.
To be counted present:A student must attend each class period. This shall include attendance at official school activities at a place other than school with the approval of the principal.
If the student arrives late to a class, the student will be marked tardy in that class. If the student is more than 30 min late to class, this is considered an absence.
When my student is absent, what should I do?
Students are required to submit an absence note when they miss school in order to excuse that absence. Absence notes can be submitted by (1) bringing the note to the attendance office, or (2) sending the note to fvhsattendance@wcpss.net
Per policy, absences can be excused for the following reasons:
- Illness or injury. A doctor's note must be turned in if the student has missed an extended number of days from school.
- A death in the family
- Health care appointments
- Court appearances
- Religious observance
- Natural disasters
- Outside educational opportunities (prior approval is required using the Request for Absence for Educational Reasons form (English | Spanish)
Students should also communicate with their teachers about make-up work.
The student is responsible for submitting a note signed by the parent citing the reason for an absence to the principal's designee within two (2) days of the student's return to school. Failure to comply with the above will result in the absence being unexcused.
Absence notes should include the following:
- Student’s name – first and last – no nicknames
- Date(s) absent
- Time leaving school
- Reason for leaving
- Parent/Guardian signature
- Home and work phone numbers of parents
Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to the following: missed bus, oversleeping, car trouble, personal errands, family trips, and failure to bring a parent's note in the allotted time frame.
Make-Up Work:
Excessive absences will have serious academic consequences and may result in class or grade-level failure. For all absences, the student shall make up all work in a timely manner at the convenience of the teacher.
The make-up work may be specific material missed by the student, reinforcement, or enrichment.
Absences are considered excessive when students exceed 7 days per semester. Excessive absences place students in academic risk for failing their classes.
Students must demonstrate mastery of class skills and objectives based on the teacher’s evaluation using the following criteria:
1.) Knowledge of the curriculum of the class as defined by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
2.) Prompt and successful completion of coursework the student missed while absent. This may include an after-school or lunch time study session with a teacher.
**Students who skip or otherwise fail to attend all scheduled classes regularly are subject to immediate disciplinary action.**The comprehensive FVHS attendance policy and procedures can be found on pages 5-11 in the student handbook. (English Version, Spanish Version)
