Lufkin Road Middle School Attendance Policies and Procedures
Welcome back to a new school year! We hope this will be an exciting year offering all of you many new learning opportunities and experiences. We at Lufkin believe consistent daily school attendance is at the core of academic success. In helping our students and families’ to best achieve these successes, we would like to review important Lufkin Road Middle School and WCPSS School Board policies which apply to attendance issues. For a complete listing of the School Board Attendance Policies, please refer to the WCPSS Internet Website and follow the School Board link to the 6000 policies (Student Services).
Six Day Letters for Unexcused Absences
Any student who has 6 unexcused absences anytime during the school year will receive a letter from the Lufkin Principal informing the parents/guardian of the absences. This letter will state the North Carolina State Law that requires Compulsory School attendance up to age 16 years.
Prior Approval for Educational Leave and Make up Work
In order to request Educational Leave an ”Excused Absence for Educational Reasons” form must be completed by the student’s parent/guardian and turned into the front officetwo weeks prior to the student’s departure from school. Mrs. Mitchell, the Lufkin front desk receptionist, will provide you with a form and will also take all completed forms which will be reviewed by the Administrative staff. Per School Board Policy, it is the student’s responsibility to get the school work they will miss while away from school prior to their absence. The make- up work must be turned in to the teacher either the day before they leave or the day they return. Also a report describing the student’s educational experience is due on the day the student returns to school from the trip.
Notes for Excused Absences
Absences not listed under the 6000.3 section of the WCPSS School Board Policy will be considered unexcused. The student is responsible for submitting a note, signed by the parent, citing the reason for an absence to the Main office on the day the student returns. The student has up to two days following an absence that is to be considered excused to submit the note. In addition the student needs to sign in at the front desk in order to return to class after an absence. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the absence being unexcused.
Early Release Attendance
In order for a student to be counted present for an Early Release day, the student must attend the full school day. Leaving early any time on the day of an Early Release School Day will not count toward a day present.
