Mr. Tim Garris
This 2015-2016 school year begins my fifth year here at Oak Grove Elementary School as a fourth-grade teacher on track 3! I grew up in a small town just outside Charlotte, NC. From there I became a student at Winston-Salem State University where I obtained my undergraduate degree. Immediately following graduation, I enrolled as a graduate student at Radford University where I obtained my graduate degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Next, I relocated to Atlanta to begin a career as an Employee Benefits/Compensation Analyst with a major insurance firm. I should have known that was far from my personality. Me, working in a cubicle, attending board meetings and conducting reviews without face to face interaction with the general public? That scenario lasted about two years before I decided to pursue a career in education in an urban school district in South New Jersey. I obtained my teacher certification via Rutgers University/Glassboro State College of NJ. Fast forward, became married and a father of four children while teaching Math and Social Studies in the public schools at the middle school level. After serving many years in two school districts in NJ, my family and I decided to relocate to Raleigh, NC to continue my desire to teach, but with a slight twist, elementary school! My first assignment was as a third-grade teacher at Weatherstone Elementary School. After serving a few years there, I accepted a position here at Oak Grove as a fourth-grade teacher. I have to admit that this has to be one of my favorite teaching assignments! The administration, fellow staff members, parents, and community are really great! I feel glad to be a part of the community.
