Good Day! This is Dr. Wheeler with an update on school information.
SSA Testing: The time to request Single Subject Acceleration testing for your child in Mathematics or English Language Arts is now! You must request the testing by Friday, April 24th. A flyer is going home to every child with general information. We also will have an information session on Wednesday, April 5th, at 7:30 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. for interested parents.
PACK Assembly: Our quarterly PACK assembly is this coming Monday, April 3rd. Kindergarten, first and second graders will be recognized at the 1:05 pm. program. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be recognized at the 2:00 p.m. program.
Silent Auction: The count down has started for our adults only A Night to Shine Silent Auction. Last year, the event was a great success and allowed us to purchase the leveled library that many of our students enjoy on a regular basis today. The PTA Silent Auction Committee has a fun evening planned with great food/drinks, entertainment and lots of exciting items to bid on. The event in on Friday April 21st, starting at 6:30 P.M. at the beautiful AIA building in Raleigh. Buy your tickets soon at oldsauction.eventbee.com or in person before and after school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the school foyer.
Fundraiser: Our PTA is sponsoring a family “eat out” fundraiser at Chipotle, Saturday, April 1 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm They will be donating 50% of their proceeds to the Fred Olds PTA. The funds will be used to help sponsor future student fieldtrips. All you have to do is state that you want your food purchase to go to Fred Olds. This should be fun for the entire family, so we hope to see you there!
Art Show: Show off your creativity at the Olds Spring Fling Art Show. Students please turn in your paintings, drawing, collages, sculptures, paper mache, lego creations, or other types of artwork for display during the Spring Fling. Artworks are due to Ms. Lowell by May 3rd. Please include your name, grade, and title of work. Artwork will be on display on May 5th during the Spring Fling. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Liz Hollar.
Congratulations: We want to congratulate Ja'Mia Banks for her second place PTA Reflections win for dance. We also congratulate Saila Chassin for her second place win in the Law Week Poster Contest.

Good day! This is Dr. Wheeler with a few announcements for Olds families. This message will be posted on the school website under Principal Message.
Community Food Drive: We will be finishing our annual community food drive this Friday, March 10. At this time, Ms. Hill’s students are in the lead for bringing in the most cans and dried goods. All food donations will be going to Wake Relief in downtown Raleigh for our community families. Thank you to all for you donations! Coach is waiting eagerly to see which class he will be sponsoring extra activities with in the near future! Keep bringing in those food items through Friday and good luck.
Yard Sale: Our annual Olds Elementary Yard Sale is this Saturday, March 11, from 7:30 - 11 a.m. If you are donating items, please drop them off on Friday, March 10, from 8 a.m. -5 p.m. in the gym. We are accepting items in good, sellable condition including household items, furniture, rugs, art, jewelry, sporting goods, toys & games, books, holiday decor etc. Please do NOT bring clothes, computers, outdated electronics, cassette tapes, personal care items etc. Tax forms will be available if you want one.
Books Are Magic: We are gearing up for our annual “Books are Magic” drive. We will need some volunteers to help with sorting, stamping, set up and take down of the bookstore. The drive will start on Friday the 10th with a table at the yard sale drop-off and continue through Friday March 24th. The bookstore itself will run May 8-11th. Thank you in advance for making this a very special and amazing event!

Good Morning. This is Dr. Wheeler, your Olds Elementary Principal, with a few announcements. This information will be posted on the school website under Principal Message.
PTA Meeting: We are holding a PTA meeting tonight, Tuesday, February 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 in the Media Center. Anna Lutz, one of our parents and a registered dietician and pediatric nutritionist, will be talking about child nutrition. Topics will include: What is the best way to approach food and nutrition and not enter into the food battles? What are some practical tips and strategies to help children grow up to be competent eaters? We hope you will be able to join us for this helpful event. Childcare will be provided in the gym.
Community Food Drive: Our annual Wake Relief Community Food Drive start tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 21 and ends on Friday, March 10. Students are asked to bring canned goods and packaged dry food and place their items in a classroom bin.
Lock Down Drill: We had one of our annual lock down drill practices today. Students were informed of the process and why we practice in order to act in a safe manner in an emergency situation. If you have any questions, please direct them to Mrs. Condry at firstname.lastname@example.org .]You also can call the office at 919-856-7699 and leave a message for Mrs.Condry. She will call you back as soon as possible.
Parent Information Sessions On Acceration Opportunities: Last week, a flyer was sent home that was published by our district gifted program staff. It listed parent information sessions on a range of topics including middle school courses and how to sign your child up for single subject acceleration testing that is needed to be in classes next year. There are four more sessions available in March if you are interested. Details about the sessions will be coming home in your Tuesday folders next week. You also can access information on the wake county website. If you have any specific questions in the meantime, please send them to Dr. Wheeler at email@example.com.
Battle of the Box Tops
Wow, your PTA volunteers counted over 10,000 box tops and collected over $500 from dime bombing to raise $1600. Thank you, Carol Holt, for all your hard work to help us make all this money. We appreciate all the work you do to get this "free money" for the school. The grand prize winner of the Box Top Battle is Ms. Dalessio's class! They won a pizza party. Ms. Stradling's class brought in the most Box Tops and won a popsicle party. Ms. Brann's class brought in the most Labels for Education and won a popsicle party. Great job everyone! Be sure to save your Box Tops all year to win next year.

Good afternoon Olds Elementary Families. This is Dr. Wheeler with a few school announcements. This message will be posted on the school website under Principal Message.
Early Release: We have an early release day tomorrow, Feb. 10, 2017. Students are dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Please make sure your child knows how they are going home. Also, if you need childcare, you can register for the Early Release After School Care Program up until tomorrow morning, 9 a.m.
Playground: Students who play on our school playground from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. must be with a parent or adult that is responsible for them. Only After School Program students are allowed on the playground after 3:30 p.m. Finally, we will have on and off grass days. Please honor the system so we can keep grass growing on our playground.
Black History Performance: Our annual fifth grade Black History Performance is scheduled for a dress rehearsal on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017 at 1:45 p.m. The program will be presented the same day at 6 p.m.
Spelling Bee Winners: Congratulations to all the students who participated in our annual spelling bee. We loved watching you perform! Special congratulations to Alex Gilliland, Faraz Foroughi, and Jackson Hatch for taking first, second and third place prizes.

Good evening. This is your Olds Elementary Principal with a few short reminders about upcoming events. These comments will be posted on the website under Principal Message.
Early Release: Students have an early release tomorrow, Friday, January 20th. School ends at 12:30 p.m. All students will leave school at 12:30 p.m. unless they are participating in the early release after school program.
Spelling Bee: Students are preparing for our annual Spelling Bee that will take place this coming Tuesday, January 24th. The event will begin after school in the school gym at 3:30 p.m.
Snow Day Make Up: We will have school on Friday, January 27th. It is a snow/ice make up day. School will run according to our normal hours.

Good day. This is Dr. Wheeler, your Olds Elementary principal, with a few short announcements. This message will be posted on our website under Principal Message.
Inclement Weather: All after school activities in Wake County Schools have been cancelled. This means the After School Program, any meetings, any school activities are cancelled today. All children go home at 3 p.m. If your child is not a bus rider or independent walker, please be at the school at 3 p.m. today. Also, please watch the news and WCPSS websites for updates on the weather. If there are any further school cancellations or delays, they will be announced in those media sources.
Assessments: All students are taking their mid-year mCLASS reading assessments in January. They do not study for these assessments. The information lets teachers know how your child is progressing. We also have some pilot assessments taking place with Mrs. Bunn’s class and with the fifth grade students. The pilot assessments are for a short period and one day only. If you have any questions about any of these assessments, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Spelling Bee: Our school’s spelling bee will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room.
Please be prepared for the incoming snow storm and follow your media sources for any updates on school delays or cancellations.

Farewell Event: Our PTA is sponsoring a farewell event for Mrs. Evans, our music teacher, from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. tomorrow, December 21, 2016. Please join us as we thank her for her service to Olds and wish her well on her new adventure.
Winter Break: Students begin Winter Break Thursday, December 22, 2016. That means tomorrow is the last day for students before Winter Break. Students return to school in the New Year on January 3, 2017.

Science Fair: Science Fair for K-2 students is tomorrow, Dec. 13, 2016. Grades 3-5 will participate on Wednesday. All presenters should set up between 8 and 8:25 a.m. Students are invited to view siblings' presentations. We look forward to hearing all about our students’ Science information!
Holiday Concert: Our second and third grade students will be showcasing their talents in a holiday concert for us. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Parents – You will be receiving an email from your teachers with more details for your child.
Spelling Bee: It’s not until January, but it will be here soon. Our annual spelling be is scheduled for January 24 at 3:30 in the gym. All classes will have mini-spelling bees in preparation for the school-wide one Jan. 24th.
We hope to see you at the concert and other upcoming events!

IOWA Testing: Our third graders will be taken the standardized IOWA test next week on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016. You can help by making sure the students get a good night’s rest and a good breakfast. Thank you.
PTA: Our general PTA meeting will be held this coming Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you there.

Thanksgiving Luncheon: Our annual Thanksgiving luncheon for grandparents and special friends is tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016! We hope to see you there!
Stop Hunger Now: We are so proud to announce that our children and their families raised over $1,400 in just 3 days by participating in the Stop Hunger Now event! Thank you for fighting to end hunger! Every penny and every hand can change the world! The winning classes of the Stop Hunger Now party contest are Mrs. Hill’s class for the most in donations and Mrs. Brann’s class for the highest number of participants at the event. Best of all, we packaged meals to feed over 120,000 people suffering from hunger. Way to go Fred Olds and many thanks to Mrs. York for organizing our school’s participation in this wonderful community event with our neighborhood Forest Hills Baptist Church.
Thanksgiving Break: Students will be on Thanksgiving break from Wednesday, Nov. 23rd through Sunday, Nov. 27th. School begins again on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016 at the regular programming times.
