AIG at ECMS
We are proud of our AIG program here at East Cary Middle School. We strive to differentiate through co-teaching as well as pulling groups out to participate in engaging hands-on reading, math and stem activities. A primary goal in working with teachers and AIG students is incorporating Socratic Seminars - helping students to develop critical speaking and listening skills as they discuss complex and controversial topics, text and other resources.
AIG students at East Cary Middle School have an annual Differentiated Education Plan (DEP) based on their Individual Student Profiles (ISP). Parents/Guardians receive these documents each year with a description of service delivery options as described by Wake County. AIG identification carries over from elementary to middle school within WCPSS.
If your child was identified as AIG in another school system, a review of all original identification paperwork is required. WCPSS accepts certain aptitude and achievements tests; students’ scores must meet WCPSS eligibility requirements. In some cases, additional testing will be required during one of two testing windows (fall or spring).
Mrs. Courtney Rudder, the AIG Teacher, works with Student Services to ensure your child’s correct placement in their classes. AIG students are cluster-grouped and scheduled into classes for Language Arts and Math. A cluster is defined as a group of 5-20 AIG identified students who are served in a regular classroom setting. Additionally, students identified in the area of Mathematics are differentiated for through their math course selection now that they are learning at the Middle School Level.
Various ways Mrs. Rudder provides support to our AIG population include the following:
- co-teaching with your child’s teacher,
- planning and modeling lessons
- pull-out services for AIG students - sometimes during their class periods but mostly during our EE Enrichment time,
- constant collaboration and communication with teachers to plan differentiated lessons, activities, and projects.
Some of the differentiation strategies utilized by your child’s teachers are:
- Independent Projects for further investigations based on student interest
- Tiered Assignments
- Flexible Grouping
- Learning or Interest Centers
- Varying Questions and Questioning Techniques
- Learning Contracts
- Cluster Grouping
Mrs. Rudder also aids teachers to incorporate the Engineering Design Process in both STEM electives and the classroom. In addition, our school has a concentration on Problem-Based Learning, teaching real-world critical and creative thinking problem skills.
