Weekly Message for 10-16-22

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 10/16/2022

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for October 16.

  • This Week: This week is a five-day week for students on Track 1 &3. Next Monday (the 24th) is a Teacher Workday. Track 4 returns on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
  • Track 3 Report Cards: Were distributed last Wednesday.
  • School Tours: If you know a family who might be interested in sending their child(ren) to Pine Hollow next year, please encourage them to sign up for a tour using this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c4ea9a62da13-phms.
  • Attention 8th Grade Families: There are many high school options in Wake County. Please encourage your child to join us in the LLC during flight school to learn more about specific Early College & Magnet School Programs. Please click here for the school names & visit dates to PHMS. WCPSS will also host a Magnet/Early College Fair on October 29. Please visit wcpss.net/magnet for more information. Application Window: Early College Oct 14-Dec 14, Magnet Schools Oct 14-Jan 25
  • Community Reads: Attention Pilot Families… As many of you have read in this weekly email, or maybe heard from your student, we are in the beginning stages of our Fall Community Reads project. This is an activity that fosters a community feel around a shared story. In the coming weeks we will offer games and activities related to the story Front Desk by Kelly Yang. We encourage you to get involved! Read the story with or alongside your student and make plans to join us for the discussions and activities later this fall (you don’t have to have read the book to attend…come out to support your student and their reading!). Some families feel a disconnection from the school building and the community that is created in elementary school, if that sounds like you… maybe Community Reads will fill that void. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Ziller at kziller@wcpss.net or Mr. Hutchinson at jhutchinson@wcpss.net
  • Fun Run: Don't forget to sign up for the annual Food Drive Fun Run on October 29th at 9am on the PHMS track! You can register to participate with for $10 through October 27th. As always, all funds will benefit the Food Bank of NC and contribute to the Students Against Hunger Food Drive competition. Registration is online.  Please visit bit.ly/phmsfunrun22 for more information. We look forward to your support in this fun event! Email Mrs. West with any questions.
  • From Our Athletic Director, Mr. Adams: Parents, what a great Rivalry week we had.  Congratulations to our Girls’ Soccer team and our Football team for holding Leesville scoreless in their games.  The Volleyball team played a fantastic match.  The match went to the 5th game and OT.  Unfortunately, the ladies fell 3-2 on some questionable circumstances.  So proud of the efforts of all our athletes.
    • This week Girls’ Soccer and Football get their first road tests of the year at Durant.  Volleyball will be at PINE HOLLOW due to a floor issue at Durant.
    • Basketball tryouts are one month away.  The deadline to have all your boxes checked in Dragonfly is just 3 WEEKS AWAY.  Eligibility remains the same as Fall Sports, we will look at 2nd semester of last school year for grades and attendance.  I will begin putting lists in the athletic bulletin board this week. Kids can easily check it on their way to and from PE.
    • Thank you for your support.
  • Social Media Presentation for Parents: Our counselors will be doing another presentation for parents regarding the latest social media trends and how to keep students safe. It will be Oct. 27 at 6PM. All parents are invited.
  • Teacher Recognition Program:  Is there a teacher or staff member you would like to celebrate for doing a terrific job? Has someone been consistently outstanding or maybe gone above-and-beyond recently for your student/family? If so, I encourage you to nominate that person for our Top Gun Staff Member of the Month award. There aren’t any firm rules or requirements to nominate someone for recognition. The point of this is to recognize a teacher or two each month who was nominated by a student or parent. The teacher(s) would be recognized in front of their peers at the next staff meeting. In order to nominate someone, just fill out this form and make sure to clearly explain why you think they are deserving of this recognition.
  • From the PTSA:
    • Support the PHMS PTSA by becoming a member! We encourage all parents, guardians, teachers, and students to join. https://pinehollow.memberhub.com/store?category=Memberships
    • Support Pine Hollow Middle School by donating to the PTSA's annual Invest In Your Child campaign! Details are in the attached document. The PTSA collects donations only once a year through this no-fuss giving/fundraising campaign: https://pinehollow.memberhub.com/store/items/61043
    • Here is a fun opportunity to volunteer with and support the PTSA: help sell concessions at the home athletic events! Sign up here--there are a lot of flexible times and dates: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e4facaf22a02-phms A quick note from the concessions committee: due to a lack of demand, pizza will not be sold at the remaining volleyball/soccer games this season. However, there will be plenty of snacks and drinks to keep your kids happy!
    • We have a new Spirit Night opportunity this year! Join us on October 20th at City BBQ. Order ahead or upon arrival. Attached is a flyer with all the details.
    • If you have any questions about the PTSA, please reach us at phmsptsa16@gmail.com
