• Weekly Message for 8-9-20

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 8/9/2020

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for August 9.

    • Parent Portal in Power School: Parents of rising 6th graders and any students new to WCPSS will want to gain access to the parent portal in Power School. This allows you to keep up with your student’s grades and attendance without having to wait for an interim or report card. In order to claim your account, you will need to either download this form and have it notarized and mailed to the school, or you can scan this completed form along with a CLEAR picture of the parent/guardian’s photo ID and email our receptionist, mellisfitzgerald@wcpss.net. Your student’s ID number is their lunch number from elementary school. Your student will gain access to the Student Portal once school begins.
    • Remote Learning: All students will begin the year with online instruction. Regardless of whether students are enrolled in the Virtual Academy or Plan B-Transition, the school year begins on Monday, Aug. 17.
    • First 2 Weeks of School: WCPSS has announced the first two weeks of school for all students will focus on orientation, meet and greet opportunities, and distribution of supplies. We are working with teachers now to plan virtual meet-and-greet sessions and a timeline for distribution of supplies. Look for specific dates/times in the next weekly message (Aug. 16.)
    • Daily Schedule for VA/Remote Learning: Here is the overall schedule we will follow while all students are engaged in remote learning:
      • 8:05-8:50 Flight School
      • 8:50-9:55 Core 1
      • 9:55-11:00 Core 2
      • 11:00-12:05 Core 3
      • 12:05-1:05 Lunch
      • 1:05-1:45 PE/Elective
      • 1:45-2:25 PE/Elective
      • 2:25-3:05 PE/Elective

**Science and Social Studies will be taught in one semester rather than over the course of the year. Students who take Science in the fall will take SS in the spring and vice-versa.

**Please note that students only have PE and one elective, so each student will have a “hole” in their schedule. That was done to keep PE/elective class sizes down and also to give students a time to catch their breath during the day.

**Students will NOT be on the computer receiving instruction for the entire class period every day. Teachers will use a combination of live instruction and asynchronous learning.

**When the decision is made to transition back to face-to-face learning, our daily schedule will be adjusted accordingly and student schedules will have to be re-done. This will result in many students having a change in teacher.

    • Office Hours: Pine Hollow’s office is open from 8-12 Tuesday mornings and 12-4 Thursday afternoons. Visitors are asked to please make an appointment if at all possible so that we can maintain social distancing and keep everyone safe. All visitors are required to wear a mask at all times while inside the building.
    • District Communication: For the latest information from WCPSS, please check https://www.wcpss.net/returntocampus
    • 7th Grade Tdap and Meningococcal Vaccines: By law all 7th grade students must provide proof of these immunizations within 30 days of the start of school or they must be excluded from school until proof is provided. This is not a Pine Hollow or WCPSS policy but a NC law. The only exceptions are students with a medical or religious exemption. We have been notified that this rule also applies to students enrolled in the Virtual Academy and/or distance learning. All 7th grade students must submit proof by September 18 or they will be excluded from school until such proof is provided. Proof of immunizations can be emailed to our data manager, Yolanda Sanders (yssanders@wcpss.net), or mailed to the school to her attention.

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 8/2/2020

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for August 2.

    • Change in Start-End Times: Due to the fact that Multi-Track Year-Round schools are starting several weeks later than normal, every MTYR school’s schedule had to be extended by fifteen minutes each day in order to meet the minimum number of hours required by the General Assembly. Our daily schedule for 2020-21 will be 8:05-3:05.
    • Remote Learning: All students will begin the year with online instruction. Just over 50% of Pine Hollow students are enrolled in the Virtual Academy at each grade level. Regardless of whether students are enrolled in the VA or Plan B, the school year begins on Monday, Aug. 17.
    • First 2 Weeks of School: WCPSS has announced the first two weeks of school for all students will focus on orientation, meet and greet opportunities, and distribution of supplies. More info specific to PHMS will be released as plans are finalized.
    • Daily Schedule for VA/Remote Learning: We are now in the process of scheduling students into teachers’ classes. Given all the changes that have occurred, we must reschedule the entire student body. Just as soon as scheduling is complete, we will let you know and you will be able to see your student’s teachers via PowerSchool. Here is the overall schedule we will follow for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday while all students are engaged in remote learning:
      • 8:05-8:50 Flight School
      • 8:50-9:55 Core 1
      • 9:55-11:00 Core 2

      • 1:05-1:45 PE/Elective
      • 1:45-2:25 PE/Elective
      • 2:25-3:05 PE/Elective

**Wednesdays will be used for intervention and enrichment, individual/small-group instruction, etc. and will not follow the above schedule.

    • Virtual Academy Confirmation: Parents who applied for Virtual Academy will receive a separate message Monday afternoon (Aug. 3) confirming that enrollment. Any parent who applied for enrollment in the VA who does not receive that email should contact the main office on Tuesday.
    • Office Hours: Pine Hollow’s office is open from 8-12 Tuesday mornings and 12-4 Thursday afternoons. • Weekly Message for 7-26-20

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 7/26/2020 6:00:00 AM

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for July 26.

    • Technology Needs Survey: As we prepare to return to school in an online environment, every K-12 student will need a laptop and Internet access in order to complete assignments, participate in instruction, and collaborate and learn with others. We’re asking allfamilies with a student in grades K-12 to complete this survey for each student, regardless of your school, whether you have applied to the Virtual Academy, whether you have a device or whether you need a device. (Pre-K students’ technology will be addressed separately by the Office of Early Learning.) This short survey will help us better understand the needs of our students and make sure that we are able to meet those needs. Although the district intends to provide a device for every student in the future, some families may choose to provide their own laptop at this time. If you choose to purchase and/or provide a laptop for your child, we recommend an up-to-date Chromebook, Windows 10, or Apple (laptop only). Mobile devices, such as phones and tablets, typically cannot provide an adequate experience for online learning. Please complete this survey no later than midnight on Wednesday, July 29.
    • Remote Learning: Last week the school board decided to delay bringing students back to school under Plan B. All students will now begin the year with online instruction. Currently approximately 50% of Pine Hollow students are enrolled in the Virtual Academy at each grade level. Regardless of whether students are enrolled in the VA or Plan B, the school year begins on Monday, Aug. 17.
    • Virtual Academy Application Window: WCPSS is opening a second window for parents to apply for enrollment in the VA. The window will open at 12:01AM on Monday, July 27 and it will close at 5:00PM on Wednesday, July 29. Click here for more info regarding VA.
    • What Should I Do?: Practically speaking, Pine Hollow students will receive very similar instruction whether they are enrolled in the VA or Plan B unless/until students return to school for face-to-face instruction under Plan B. Parents who are struggling with whether or not they should enroll their child in the VA should ask themselves which is more important: ensuring their child receives remote instruction for the entire semester or school year (VA), or getting their child back onto the school campus as quickly as possible (Plan B). Any student who is not enrolled in the VA will automatically be under Plan B. But for now, all students will receive remote instruction until the school board decides it is safe for Plan B students to return to the building.
    • First 2 Weeks of School: WCPSS has announced the first two weeks of school for all students will focus on orientation, meet and greet opportunities, and distribution of supplies. More info specific to PHMS will be released as plans are finalized.
    • Daily Schedule: We are putting the finishing touches on our master schedule for the 2020-21 school year. There are a few more details to be ironed out before I can release it, but we are close. Once the master schedule is locked in, we then have to re-do every student’s schedule based on whether they are enrolled in the VA or Plan B. Some of our teachers will only teach students in the VA or only students in Plan B. Other teachers will teach students in VA and Plan B. For instance, we only have one band teacher, one chorus teacher and one art teacher, so those teachers will definitely be teaching students in VA and Plan B. We will release our master schedule and student schedules as soon as possible.

  • Weekly Message for 7-19-20

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 7/19/2020

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. Welcome to the 2020-21 school year!! This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for July 19.

    • PHMS Communication: I recognize that many of you have lots and lots of questions regarding the upcoming school year and what it will “look like.” I too have many unanswered questions. Things change rapidly and it can be challenging to keep up with everything! I will do my very best to keep you updated via the weekly message and our school website as to how district-level decisions affect us at Pine Hollow. Regardless of whether your child is taking his/her classes via the Virtual Academy or with us under Plan B, Pine Hollow teachers and staff are ready to make the 2020-21 school year a great one! We look forward to seeing our Pilots soon.
    • District Communication: For the latest information from WCPSS, please check https://www.wcpss.net/returntocampus
    • Virtual Academy: Tomorrow (Monday, July 20) is the last day to apply to the WCPSS Virtual Academy. Click here for more information.
    • School Board Meeting: Late last week it was announced that the Board would be meeting on Tuesday to discuss possible changes to the planned reopening of schools under Plan B. Should the district decide to modify Plan B, another registration window for the Virtual Academy will be opened.
    • Student Schedules: Given the complexities of opening school with some students in the Virtual Academy and other students receiving a combination of face-to-face and remote learning, the majority of our students will have a change in their schedule from what is currently in Power School. Once we know how many students will be in the Virtual Academy this year, we can begin to assign students to teachers. For students not enrolled in the Virtual Academy, the district will be assigning students to three different groups based on who does/does not ride the bus and which students have siblings at another school in the district. All of this must be done before PH counselors can begin making the necessary adjustments to student schedules. Needless to say, this is a complicated and time-consuming process. Just as soon as we have student schedules completed, we will get them to families.
• New Chorus Program

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 6/22/2020

Good afternoon Pine Hollow Middle School community,

I hope that all the Pilot fathers had an awesome Fathers Day yesterday! I am contacting you today to make sure you are aware that we will be adding a chorus program to our school for the 2020-21 school year. This is something we have long-wanted to do and its finally going to happen! We have already hired a teacher and can't wait to begin singing!!

Currently, we have room in our program to add additional students beyond those who listed chorus on their registration form for the upcoming school year. If you are interested in your child taking chorus in the upcoming school year and you did not list it as one of your child's selections, please contact Mr. Tunstall, one of our assistant principals, and he will be able to assist. His email is "ctunstall@wcpss.net".

Thank you very much and I hope you have a great summer. We look forward to seeing our Pilots again in August.

    Sincerely,

    Andrew Livengood, Principal

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for May 24.

    • Congratulations: Our 8th grade Asst. Principal, Jo Ellen Newhouse, was recently named principal of Heritage Middle School effective July 1. Congratulations to her on this wonderful opportunity and a big THANK YOU for her 4 years of service to PH students and families!
    • Closing out 2019-20:
      • We will have another opportunity for students to collect personal belongings, pick-up medications, return locks, library books, athletic uniforms, ELA novels etc. etc.
      • Students on Track 1 will come to school on Monday, June 1.
      • Students on Tracks 2 & 3 will come to school on Tuesday, June 9.
      • Students on Track 4 will come to school on Monday, June 8.
      • Students should arrive according to their last name:

      • 7th and 8th graders should come through carpool and 6th graders should come through the bus loop.
      • We will remove locks from the lockers ahead of time and each student will be given a plastic bag as they enter the school. Everything from a student’s locker will be placed in the bag unless it belongs to PHMS. No trash cans will be available. Students will need to discard trash once they get home.
      • Anyone entering the building must wear a face mask and social distancing will be required. School staff will be on site to direct students as they enter the building and to ensure everyone’s safety. Only one person per student (either student OR parent) will be allowed to enter the building.
      • Weather permitting, we will have stations outside of the building (in carpool and the bus loop) for items to be returned. There will be a station for yearbook pick-up in carpool and the bus loop.
      • 8th graders will be allowed to sign the Spirit Rock!
      • Chromebooks and hot spots only need to be returned if your student will NOT be returning to WCPSS for the 2020-21 school year. If your student will be in the district next school year, families are asked to hang on to devices and hot spots for now.
      • Each team will hold a virtual year-end celebration. Please contact your child’s team teachers for information.

  • Weekly Message for 5-10-20

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 5/10/2020

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for May 10.

    • Happy Mothers Day!!!
    • Track Assignments for Rising 6th Graders: Have been posted to the website by student ID number.
    • Loose Ends: With Governor Cooper’s recent announcement that we will not return to school this school year, we now have many loose ends to clean up. Among the issues to be addressed are: locker clean-outs, library book returns, yearbook distribution, athletic uniform collections, 8th grade spirit rock signing, medicine pick-ups, etc. etc. I am working on plans right now for these various issues and will communicate details as plans are developed.
    • Digital Learning: At this point all students should now be engaging in online learning. Most of our students are engaged in their core classes, but we are seeing a significant drop off in elective classes. Please have your student check their elective teacher's website for information about class assignments and weekly virtual meetings. Our teachers are trying to strike the balance between keeping parents informed when students are not engaged while also understanding that there are many legitimate reasons why students might not be able to fully participate. Please know that there is no “right” or “wrong” way for you to support your child with his/her remote learning as each family is unique. If you or your student have any questions regarding the structure or format for this new way of teaching/learning, please email the teacher and they will be glad to assist. Please note, each teacher has daily office hours in order to help students and answer questions. If you are unsure exactly how your student’s teachers are teaching remotely, please start with his/her webpage. If you are unable to get in touch with a specific teacher, feel free to email me and I can help connect you with the teacher.
    • Athletics: Adams, our Athletic Director, has made several changes and updates to the athletics website. Please click here for more information. He has also been working hard recently to highlight some of our 8th grade student athletes via Twitter. Please click here to see all of those highlights.
    • Instructional Packets: WCPSS has also provided this document with links to grade-level instructional packets. If your family is unable to access remote learning due to technology or internet access issues, we can print a copy of the packet and mail it to you. If you are interested in this option, please contact your child’s teacher.
    • Access to Remote Learing: A number of Chromebooks were distributed to PH families who needed one on Monday, April 6 and again on April 27. So far we have distributed 88 Chromebooks and 11 hotspots for students who needed them! Anyone who needs a Chromebook or a hotspot needs to let a teacher know asap as we are nearing the end of device deployment.
    • Coronavirus Information: Visit wcpss.net/coronavirus for the latest information from WCPSS. Another helpful link regarding WCPSS Remote Learning Resources is available at: https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/instructional-continuity-wcpss/home.

      • By now families should have received their refund check for the cancelled band trip to Williamsburg.
      • For the 8th grade DC field trip, checks were mailed last week.
      • We are still trying to get a response from the bus company regarding the Richmond, VA 7th grade trip. I will share more information as soon as we hear from the bus company.
