• Weekly Message for 6-20-21

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 6/20/2021

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for June 20. This will be the final weekly message for the 20-21 school year. The next weekly message will be in July.

    • Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers and grandfathers!!
    • This Week: Tomorrow is the last day of school for this year. We wish our 8th graders much success in high school!
    • EOG Scores: Plan A students were given a letter on Friday to take home and share with parents. This letter contained the student’s Math EOG/EOC score and their Science EOG score (8th graders only). We won’t have Reading EOG scores until the fall. Parents of students in the VA will receive an email from the student’s HR teacher containing this information.
    • Annual WCPSS Student Survey: Parents are asked to please have your child complete the survey found at this link. Student may respond until June 30.
    • Information re: 21-22 school year:
      • Due to the lingering impact of the pandemic, we will not be doing our traditional “Fly By” schedule pick up and open house.
      • All students will be given a copy of their schedule when they come to school on their first day.
      • At some point after July 1, Power School will roll over from the 20-21 school year to the 21-22 school year. At that point, students and parents will be able to see schedules for the upcoming school year. That roll-over is controlled by the state (NC DPI), so we don’t know exactly when that will happen.
      • Teachers are in the process of creating/revising videos and other “virtual open house” activities that we will use to welcome our students and families.
      • Several resources from the 20-21 school year are still available on our website for families who will be brand-new to our school. Just please keep in mind there will be some changes as we move into the new school year. For instance, our Student Services team created a virtual tour that can be seen here: https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/phms-student-services/virtual-tour?authuser=0. If you go to our website (https://www.wcpss.net/pinehollowms) and click on the “Academics” tab and then each grade level, you can find a lot of useful information.
      • Our student handbook for the 21-22 school year can be seen here: https://www.wcpss.net/domain/10551
      • The first day for students on Tracks 1&3 is Thursday, July 8, and the first day for students on Track 4 is Monday, August 2.
    • Enjoy this break over the next couple of weeks as we get ready for the new school year, and remember, at Pine Hollow Middle School the sky is the limit!

    • This Week: This week is a five-day week for all students. The last day of school for this year is Monday, June 21. We continue EOGs this week. See below for details.
    • EOG/EOC Test Calendar:
      • VA Testing:
        • Tuesday, June 15thVA and Plan A-- 8th grade Science EOG
        • VA students must be at school no later than 8:05.
      • Plan A Testing:
        • Monday, June 14th: 6th grade Math EOG; 7th and 8th grade ELA EOG
        • Tuesday, June 15th: 6th grade ELA EOG; 7th grade Math EOG; 8th grade Science EOG
    • All Library Books Due June 16: All PHMS library books, those library books still checked out from other WCPSS schools, and ELA class novels are to be returned inside to the library or outside to the book return bin in the front entry breezeway.  There will be a book return bin outside in the breezeway every school day from 7:35am and 3:00pm through Monday, June 21st. If you have any questions about library materials, please contact Ms. Ziller, school librarian (kziller@wcpss.net).
    • 8th Grade Celebration: 8th grade students will sign the spirit rock and have their final gathering on Friday, June 18 from 1:30-3:00 on the football field. 8th grade Virtual Academy students may come to school at 1:30 to participate. PTSA will be providing Kona Ice and each student will receive a “swag” bag. This event is for current PH 8th grade students only.
    • Annual WCPSS Student Survey: Parents are asked to please have your child complete the survey found at this link. Student may respond until June 30.
    • From Our Athletic Director: Parents, I just received some of the information regarding the 2021-2022 sports seasons.  I am still sifting through all of the information but thought I would share some headlines with you. I will provide more details through the athletic website.
      •  Wake is transitioning to a new athletic participation form.  (I DO NOT want them turned in at this time)
      • We are also transitioning to a new online registration system.  It is the same format the high schools are using; the middle school platform is not up and running yet.  I plan on using the online portal as we have in the past and will not be collecting the 5-page packets.
      • There will be no summer workouts this year. Middle schools are in a dead period and will not resume activities until at least Aug 30.
      • Academic and attendance requirements will be in place as usual.  (You must pass 3/4 core classes and miss no more than 14 days in the second semester of 2020-2021 school year.  Excused absences still count toward the 14)
    • Student Connectivity Devices--Hotspots: All internet “hotspots” issued to students must be returned by the last day of this school year. Parents can send them to school with their child (if they have returned to in-person learning) or drop them off at the main office (VA and in-person students). All hotspots will be turned off after the last day of school. Hotspots do not have to be returned to the school from which they were checked out. They can be returned to any school in the district.
    • Student Chromebooks: Students who will remain in WCPSS next year (even if they will be at a different WCPSS school) should keep a device if one was issued to them. The only students who should return a Chromebook are those who are graduating or otherwise leaving the district (i.e. withdrawing).
    • Calendars for next year: Click here for the 21-22 calendars.
    • New Teacher Recognition Program: Is there a teacher or staff member you would like to celebrate for doing a terrific job? Has someone been consistently outstanding or maybe gone above-and-beyond recently for your student/family? If so, I encourage you to nominate that person for our new Top Gun Staff Member of the Month award. There aren’t any firm rules or requirements to nominate someone for recognition. The point of this is to recognize a teacher or two each month who was nominated by a student or parent. The teacher(s) would be recognized in front of their peers at the next staff meeting. In order to nominate someone, just fill out this form and make sure to clearly explain why you think they are deserving of this recognition.
    • Yearbooks: Yearbooks will be distributed to Plan A students on Wednesday and Thursday during arrival time and Flight School. Virtual Academy students will be able to pick theirs up from the front office starting on Friday. If you purchased a yearbook, you will be receiving an email with more details. There are still a few yearbooks for purchase. Go to yearbookordercenter.com and enter the code 21759. The price is $45. Please email Ms. Anderson (kanderson1@wcpss.net) if you buy online after Tuesday so your name can be added to the distribution list.
    • Have a great week and remember, at Pine Hollow Middle School the sky is the limit!

  • Weekly Message for 5-9-21

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 5/9/2021

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for May 9.

    • Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers and grandmothers!!!
    • This Week: This week is a five-day for all students.
    • Track Assignments: Parents of rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders received an email Friday afternoon from WCPSS notifying you that our school will return to having multiple tracks for the 2021-22 school year. We can now begin the process of assigning students to tracks. As a result of our desire to balance track sizes as much as possible across each grade level, we will be collapsing track 2 for the 2021-22 school year. Students previously on track 2 will be moved to one of the other three tracks. We are currently working with our feeder elementary schools to ensure our students are on the same track as any younger siblings. Having three tracks instead of four will help us use our limited resources more efficiently which will, in turn, benefit students. Just as soon as track assignments are available, I will notify you via email, the school website and text message. I understand the urgency of families knowing their assigned track, and we will get that information to you just as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for your patience, understanding and support.

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 5/2/2021

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for May 2.

    • This Week: Wednesday is an asynchronous day for all students.
    • Virtual Academy for 2021-22: The registration window to apply for your child to be in VA next year closes today at 5pm. For more information and/or to enroll visit: https://www.wcpss.net/Page/48305
    • Athletics: Winter Workouts begin tomorrow. Parents of registered students received an email last week. Please make sure your student has the pre questionnaire paperwork with them tomorrow.
    • Yearbooks:
      • Do you have a picture of your child’s virtual workspace or from the first day of school? • Weekly Message for 4-25-21

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 4/25/2021

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for April 25.

    • This Week: Is a five-day week for all students.
    • Spotlight on Students: Each year the PH staff has the tall task of selecting our Spotlight on Student winner who is recognized during a special meeting of the WCPSS Board of Education. Unfortunately, that did not happen this year due to the pandemic but we decided to follow our normal process of asking teachers to nominate deserving students. The qualities we look for when selecting a Spotlight winner include, but are not limited to, having strong character, possessing leadership, being a good citizen, excelling in academics, and self-advocating for a healthy lifestyle. Each grade level and our PE/elective teachers selected two students to nominate. Each of these eight students received a certificate and a gift card to Goodberry’s compliments of the PTSA. The eight nominees were: Diego Alfaro and Logan Festog (6th grade), Olivia Forrester and Emily Crawford (7th grade), Roman Menendez and Makayla Moore (8th grade), and Halle Gibson and Kevin Dang (from PE/Electives). Congratulations to these terrific Pilots!!
    • Virtual Academy for 2021-22: Parents can now sign-up for their students to be in the VA for the upcoming school year. The registration window opened last Thursday and closes Sunday, May 2 at 5 pm. For more information and/or to enroll visit: https://www.wcpss.net/Page/48305
    • Virtual Academy EOG/EOC Survey: We need to identify which/how many VA students will be coming to school to take their End-of-Grade/End-of-Course tests. All students are encouraged to take the year-end tests, but I recognize not all families are comfortable having their student in the building right now. Nothing punitive will happen to students who do not take the EOG/EOC tests. A schedule of exactly which test will be given on which day will be published next month once it has been finalized. If your student is in the VA and you have not already taken the survey, please do so by April 30. This is only for parents of VA students. Here is the link: https://forms.gle/Tj5EsapSAAKCAJU5A.
    • Lunch: We were not able to begin selling extra items last week due to complications beyond our control. We are hoping to be able to start this week.
    • Athletics: Parents that registered for Winter Workouts (boys’ and girls’ basketball and cheerleading) will be receiving an email from Mr. Adams soon.
    • ELA Novels: Students need to return the ELA novels listed below back to school as soon as possible. The students will no longer need these novels and we need to have an accurate count to prepare for the upcoming school year. If your student is attending school as Plan A, please have them return the novels to their ELA teacher. If your student is a VA student, please drop them off at the front office between 7:35am-4:00pm. If your student is unsure if they have already returned a novel or if they have lost/misplaced one of their novels, please have them contact Julie Stern (jstern@wcpss.net).

  • Change to Lunch Procedures:

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 4/21/2021

Good afternoon Pine Hollow Middle School Community, This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with a special message for our Plan A families.

Earlier today we had our six-month fire inspection and learned we cannot have cafeteria tables in the hallway. Previously we had students sitting every other seat and we needed tables in the hallway in order to do that. Now that we can no longer have tables in the hallway and everyone will be eating in the cafeteria, students will be sitting closer together than they were previously.

Please have a conversation with your student tonight regarding the importance of always wearing a mask when talking. We do not have a "silent lunch" but we do expect students to not talk if their mask is off. We are most likely to spread the virus when talking without our mask, and now that students are going to be eating in closer proximity to one another, it is even more important that they wear a mask when talking.

I will address this during the morning announcements tomorrow and again with each lunch period, but your help in driving this message home is very important. Thank you for your help in keeping all our students safe.
