Interested students will participate in enrichment activities during the school day later this spring. If you have any questions, please contact Kristen Ziller (library media specialist, kziller@wcpss.net). Happy reading!

    Reminders from Previous Weeks

Reminder Regarding Student Item Drop Off

To protect instructional time and to minimize the number of disruptions to classes, we will be implementing a new process in the coming days for students to pick up items that parents/guardians drop off for them. Instead of calling classrooms to have students pickup items in the middle of class time, we will have a designated bookshelf in the front office (organized by grade level) for items to be dropped off for students. Students will then be able to pick up these items in the office during lunch or during transition time between classes/on their way to electives.

Office staff will not make calls to the classroom for students to come and get items unless these items are urgent and/or medical related (e.g., glasses, medication, etc.). If you are dropping off an item for your child, please label the item clearly with their name and grade level.

    Reminder of Student Expectations

This past week, we have seen a slight uptick in some undesirable student behaviors, mostly in the form of horseplay (e.g., chasing each other, play-fighting, pretending to take belongings, etc.). We fully recognize that kids are kids; however, maintaining a safe and orderly school environment is our first priority. While we do wish to extend grace when it is feasible, at this point in the year, I do expect that our students understand what is expected of them and what is not appropriate for the school setting.

In the coming days, the admin team will be discussing ways to level-set expectations with students to ensure that we have a positive remainder of the school year. As always, any support you can offer, as well, to remind your students about behavioral expectations while at school is greatly appreciated.

A number of high schools that we feed into will be hosting Open Houses, so please be sure to keep an eye out for communication from us about these opportunities.

In fact, on February 20, our Student Services team will be hosting two virtual sessions for parents to learn more about the high school registration process. All 8th grade parents/guardians are highly encouraged to attend. We will host these virtual sessions in the morning and evening to accommodate different schedules. Click here for more information. The Pine Hollow MS Student Services page is also a great resource for you to find information about high school registration and upcoming open houses.

    Athletics Updates from Mr. Adams

To stay up to date please follow our Athletic Director (Mr. Adams) on Instagram (PineHollow16) or Twitter (@PineHollowAD).

Last week the Pilots Traveled to Wakefield and hosted Carroll in Boys' and Girls' Basketball.  The boys split the week falling to Wakefield and defeating Carroll. The girls went 2-0 on the week, so overall a very good week for the Pilots.  This Week the Pilots have one match-up AWAY at East Millbrook on Wednesday.  This will mark the halfway point of our winter season.

    Important Dates Coming Up:

    • February 20: Dragonfly Deadline for Spring Sports

    • February 26: Tryouts for softball and boys soccer begin

    • February 27: Tryouts for track begin

Tryout information is being updated daily at https://wakecountyathleticzone.com/pine-hollow/tryout-information/

Eligibility Reminder: Don’t forget that eligibility for SPRING SPORTS is based on this school year's 1st semester grades and attendance.  You must pass at least 3 out of 4 core classes and attend 85% of your classes.  (Typically, that means no more than 14 absences in the first semester, excused or unexcused). Also, be sure to check your physical date to make sure it is still current

    Reminders:

    • Spring Tryouts are just over a month away.  Students can check bulletin board to see if they are cleared for tryouts

    • Some physicals in Dragonfly have expired, so please check to see if your child's physical is still current.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. If I filled out everything for fall and winter sports, do I have to resubmit everything again for spring tryouts?  NO

    2. If I did not select any spring sports when I originally signed up, can I go back in and select one?  Yes, however you will need to email me (Mr. Adams, pjadams@wcpss.net) to let me know. Dragonfly will not give me a heads-up, and when I sort by sport, your child will not show up.

Reminder: New Process for Student Item Drop Off

    8th Grade Field Trip Reminders

Tuesday, January 9, 2024 is the final date for students to back out of the Williamsburg (VA) field trip with the possibility of receiving a refund due to required deposits for transportation, hotels, etc. If your student no longer wishes to participate in the field trip, please contact Ms. Johannes, 8th grade assistant principal (pjohannes@wcpss.net).

Furthermore, this is a reminder that remaining balances must be paid by January 22, 2024 (for Tracks 1 & 3) and January 25, 2024 (for Track 4). Payments will be accepted online and via check in the main office.

PHMS Community Reads Update - Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling

Community Reads is a wonderful way we support and cultivate our reading culture at Pine Hollow. Our 1st semester Community Reads title, Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling, circulated 233 times from the PHMS library! Students participated in optional book-themed enrichment activities during Flight School, including Cactus trivia, creating art without using their arms or hands, and participating in creative writing. By the end of January, all core teams will have participated in 'Cactus stations,' where students learned about themes in the book, such as what it's like living without arms, what is Tourette Syndrome, and exploring flora and fauna of the southwestern US (the setting for the book). Details about our next Community Reads selection will be announced soon!

We Need Your Help to Keep Everyone Healthy

As a reminder, if your child is not feeling well, please do NOT send them to school. As a school, we certainly value regular attendance; however, our first priority is to try to keep everyone safe and healthy. This past week was particularly bad with illness—from both the student and staff perspective. By the end of the week, we had dozens of students needing to get picked up throughout the day due to illness.

As we all try to do our part to keep all the seasonal nasties (e.g., cold, flu, COVID, and other viral and bacterial infections) at bay, we really need your help. For more information, please be sure to view the WCPSS Health Guidance Page for Flu, Viruses, and Colds.

    Staying Healthy During the Season

As we grapple with cold and flu season (among other things), we kindly ask individuals who are not feeling well to stay at home until they are feeling better. Parents/guardians may wish to review the WCPSS Health Guidance Page for Flu, Viruses, and Colds for information on what to do when your child is sick.

Holiday Assistance Request - Your Support Matters

Some families within our school community are facing unique challenges, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone experiences the warmth and joy of the holidays. As such, we kindly ask for your support in donating small gift cards (max of $25 per gift card) to assist some of our families. Your generosity will make a significant difference in the lives of those who are facing hardships during this festive season.

The gift cards will be distributed to families in need, allowing them the flexibility to purchase groceries, essential items, or even special treats that bring holiday cheer. Your thoughtful donation will directly impact the well-being and happiness of our fellow Pine Hollow families. If you feel inclined to donate, please deliver gift cards to the front office by December 18th. We appreciate your support and care of our school community.
