Weekly Message for 8-14-22

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 8/14/2022

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for August 14.

  • This Week: This week is a four-day week for students on Track 1 and 4. Friday is a Teacher Workday. Track 3 is tracked-out and returns on Aug. 22.
  • PHMS Community Reads: We are cultivating a culture of reading at PHMS by sharing reading within our community. We encourage students, school staff, parents, relatives, and neighbors to read the same book and engage in discussion and activities with each other. Our Community Reads selection this semester is Front Desk by Kelly Yang. PHMS library copies are available for student checkout, visit your local library to check out a copy, or purchase your copy from your favorite place to buy books. Happy reading! Details on related activities and discussion coming soon. If you have any questions, please contact Kristen Ziller (library media specialist, kziller@wcpss.net) or Mike Hutchinson (6th grade Social Studies teacher, jhutchinson@wcpss.net).
  • Battle of the Books: Attention Families of Pilot Readers…. Do you have a reader at home? A kid that is constantly asking to go to the library or the bookstore? Do you have to tell a student in your home to put the book down? These are all pretty great problems to have 😉 and you might have a student that is perfect for the Battle of the Books club. We will have an interest meeting for students this coming Wednesday after school. If you have a kid that would like to see what Battle of the Books is all about, have them stay after school on Wednesday (8/17/22) until 4:00. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Hutchinson at jhutchinson@wcpss.net Please make sure you have arranged a pickup at 4:00 if your student is staying after school with us.
  • Best Middle School in Raleigh: We’ve been nominated as the best middle school in Raleigh and we need your votes!! Go to http://voteraleighsbest.com and click the education button, then middle school. You can vote once per day now thru Aug. 19. Let’s Go Pilots!
  • Fall Pictures: Strawbridge Studios will be here on Tuesday, Aug. 30 to take your student’s picture for the yearbook. Attached is an order form if you would like to purchase a picture packet. You can also click this link to sign up to receive updates via email regarding your child's school portraits. These updates include promotions, additional deals and the ability to order more pictures at a later time. When entering student information, parents should be sure to enter the student's name as it is on file at the school.
  • Social Media Presentation for Parents: Our counselors will be doing a couple of presentations for parents regarding the latest social media trends and how to keep students safe. The dates are Sept. 15 at 6PM and Oct. 27 at 6PM. All parents are invited. See the flier in the weekly message.
  • Attention 7th Grade Parents: State law requires all rising 7th graders to have a Tdap and Meningococcal vaccine. Students on Track 1 & 3 have until Aug. 7, and Track 4 students have until Sept. 3.  Click here for more info. Immunization records can be emailed to Ms. Thomas, our data manager, at bwthomas@wcpss.net or mailed to the school to her attention.
  • Information Regarding Child Abuse and Neglect: NC Legislators passed a law last year that requires all secondary schools across the state to inform students in grades 6-12 each year about important resources related to child abuse and neglect. It also requires schools to have this information posted in each middle and high school. The attached document contains important information and resources available in our community. WCPSS is committed to the safety and well being of children in our community.  If you have any questions about this information, please reach out to your school social worker, SAP, or school counselor.
  • From Our Athletic Director, Mr. Adams: Parents, We are just 17 Days away from all forms to be submitted and approved in DragonFly.  Please do not wait until the last minute to submit your forms, your child may miss tryouts. Please, Go back and check your information in DragonFly, I had to reject some documents. DragonFly does not notify users when documents have been rejected.
    • Tryouts Begin Sept 6 – details are on the athletic website.
    • Girls Soccer update – We are interviewing an applicant.
    • Football workouts – As students are approved by me in DragonFly, they will receive an invitation to their school email to a google classroom page from Coach March.  In GC they will sign up for workouts.  We are limited per county rules to 21 attendees.  On Monday, Coach March will post the list in GC for which students can attend on which day. The first week of conditioning went very well. Thank you.
  • Teacher Recognition Program:  Is there a teacher or staff member you would like to celebrate for doing a terrific job? Has someone been consistently outstanding or maybe gone above-and-beyond recently for your student/family? If so, I encourage you to nominate that person for our Top Gun Staff Member of the Month award. There aren’t any firm rules or requirements to nominate someone for recognition. The point of this is to recognize a teacher or two each month who was nominated by a student or parent. The teacher(s) would be recognized in front of their peers at the next staff meeting. In order to nominate someone, just fill out this form and make sure to clearly explain why you think they are deserving of this recognition.
  • From the PTSA:
  • Have a great week and remember, at Pine Hollow Middle School the sky is the limit!!
