Weekly Message for 6-7-20

Posted by Andrew Livengood on 6/7/2020

Hello Pine Hollow Middle School community. This is your principal, Andrew Livengood, with the weekly message for June 7.

  • This is the final week of the 2019-20 school year. How can that be?! I would like to thank our 8th graders for three great years and to congratulate them on wrapping up their middle school careers. We will certainly miss them, and I will look forward to hearing of their many successes in high school.
  • Closing out 2019-20: This week is the last opportunity this school year for students to clean out their lockers, return school materials, pick up yearbooks and medicine, etc. etc.:
    • Students on Track 4 will come to school tomorrow (Monday, June 8.)
    • Students on Tracks 2 & 3 will come to school on Tuesday, June 9.
    • Students should arrive according to their last name:
      • A-G 10-11am
      • H-M 11-12/noon
      • N-S 1-2pm
      • T-Z 2-3pm
    • 7th and 8th graders should come through carpool and 6th graders should come through the bus loop. Parents with students in multiple grades may choose either route.
    • Locks have been removed from the lockers so that students can quickly gather their things and exit. Students are encouraged to bring a bag with them to collect their belongings. Any student who needs one will be given a plastic bag as they enter the school. Everything from a student’s locker will be placed in the bag unless it belongs to PHMS. No trash cans will be available. Students will need to discard trash once they get home.
    • Anyone entering the building must wear a face mask and social distancing will be required. School staff will be on site to direct students as they enter the building and to ensure everyone’s safety. Only one person per student (either student OR parent) will be allowed to enter the building.
    • Weather permitting, we will have stations outside of the building (in carpool and the bus loop) for items to be returned. There will be a station for yearbook pick-up in carpool and the bus loop. Mr. Adams will be in the carpool area to collect uniforms, distribute spring sports pictures, and give 8th graders a copy of their physical if they need it for high school athletics.
    • 8th graders will be allowed to sign the Spirit Rock! The PTSA has purchased special sharpies for this occasion. Every 8th grader will be given a sharpie to keep which they will use to sign the rock.
    • Chromebooks and hot spots only need to be returned if your student will NOT be returning to WCPSS for the 2020-21 school year. If your student will be in the district next school year, even if they will not be at PH, families are asked to hang on to devices and hot spots for now.
    • Students in band who will be returning to PH for the 2020-21 school year may continue to hold on to their instrument over the summer. Keep practicing!! 8th graders and any 6th or 7th graders who will not be with us next year should return their instrument.
    • 6th and 7th graders wishing to hang on to their library books over the summer may do so and return them in August. 8th graders and any other students not returning to PH in the upcoming year should return their books.
    • Each team will hold a virtual year-end celebration. Dates have been listed on the calendar on our website. Please contact your child’s team teachers for more information.
    • The last day for Tracks 2-4 is Thursday, June 11.
    • Due to remote learning, we will NOT be printing/mailing final report cards this year. Students and parents can see final grades in each course in Power School. Teachers will let you know once they are available. For more information regarding WCPSS Summary of Grading Guidelines for 2019-20 please click here. This information has been previously released to the public directly from the school system.
  • Pilot Summer Reading Challenge: Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have the opportunity to participate in our first-ever summer reading challenge! Make a copy of this Summer Reading Challenge document (ly/pilotsummerreading), keep track of your reading this summer, and share with Ms. Ziller (kziller@wcpss.net) for a prize.
  • Virtual Library: The PHMS Virtual Library is your student's destination for reading, resources for research, and an assortment of learning activities. • Athletics:

    • By now families should have received their refund check for the cancelled band trip to Williamsburg and/or the 8th grade DC field trip.
    • We are still trying to get a response from the bus company regarding the Richmond, VA 7th grade trip. I will share more information as soon as we hear from the bus company.
  • Yearbooks: We only have a few yearbooks left for purchase. The cost is $50 and must be paid with cash or check. Books can be purchased on Monday or Tuesday of this week during our 2019-20 closeout times.
