Principal's Weekly Message
West Lake Wildcat Families~
Good afternoon, I hope everyone is well! As we navigate through these different times, please know that our Wildcat Team is here to support you. We can feel from a distance that our parents and families have come together to support one another while next steps are not always known and as new information comes to us almost daily.
In addition, I want to commend our staff for their continuous efforts, time, dedication, vulnerability, and continuous learning to #BeTheOne for Kids through their planning of academic lessons, creating lessons/opportunities for new remote learning, and to ensure our students have access to technology, food, and overall support! Again, we are here for every student, each day!
Student Device Distribution for WLMS Students will take place on Tuesday, April 7th from 3:00-5:00 PM. We will be at 3 locations during that time period to ensure convenience for all of our families: West Lake Middle School, Southeast Raleigh High School, and East Garner Elementary School. WLMS Staff Members have currently been calling students and families as we will need to know who is picking up the device for the student. Please note that there will be strict guidelines to ensure everyone’s health and safety at each site. If you will be picking up a device on Tuesday, we appreciate your cooperation with staff who have volunteered to distribute devices.
Please have your WLMS student login to their WakeID account as soon as possible. They should check their email to see if their teachers, administrators and/or other school staff members have sent them messages, notifications, and updates. Here are the links for English and Spanish versions of how to login to a student’s WakeID. Thank you to our own staff, Mr. Jacob Cole and Mr. Guillermo Guzman, for providing this resource to our students and parents!
As you know all WLMS students, regardless of track, will begin Remote Learning as determined by WCPSS on Monday, April 13, 2020. Continuing this week, students are expected to login to their WakeID accounts for messages and review/extension work from their teachers. In addition, here is the link to a WCPSS Remote Learning Resources website. The site contains numerous lessons and activities designed to help you keep your student engaged in learning.
It is our goal to stay connected to our students as we truly miss seeing them each and every day! We look forward to connecting more this week through opportunities teachers have made possible for students through their Google Classrooms.
I will be sending another message midweek to walk parents and students through all of the WLMS Remote Learning Resources and how to utilize them for new learning when it begins on Monday, April 13, 2020.
At the end of last week, you received information from WCPSS regarding Remote Learning. Here are some highlights contained in that message:
- Updated grading practices and expectations. You can find that information here.
- UNC-TV Partnership- UNC-TV and the NC Department of Public Instruction have established a partnership that will support remote learning with content that will be accessible to students—especially those with limited or no internet access—at no charge. Each weekday, two blocks of programming on UNC-TV's North Carolina Channel will serve 4th through 8th grade students, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
These educational program blocks are available on the North Carolina Channel, available statewide for free over-the-air, through cable providers and streamed online.
