Indigenous Peoples' Day is a holiday that municipalities and cities throughout the United States celebrate to honor Native American peoples and commemorate their histories and cultures. The holiday recognizes the legacy and impact of colonialism on Native communities, and it also celebrates the cultures, contributions, and resilience of contemporary Native peoples. It is celebrated on the second Monday in October. 

This year, Indigenous Peoples' Day will be Monday, Oct. 10. We have prepared resources for staff to appropriately acknowledge and celebrate this day with students.

The Wake County Board of Education, with support from the Wake County Indian Education Parent Committee, officially recognizes the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Wake County Schools via proclamation: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eNYzafgeSLIPdTo0mZl1cDCClF10ux0k/view 

It is important to share the significance of people and events on Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the learning is also integrated throughout the entire school year in the secondary Social Studies curriculum.
