DRMS' Principal Message
Greetings Dolphin Families,
Spread the Word - Inclusion Week: Join us in celebrating Spread the Word - Inclusion Week 3/3/25 - 3/7/25, as we embrace diversity, promote kindness, and ensure that every student feels valued and supported! Throughout the week, we’ll have a spirit week, inclusion assembly, engaging activities, take a pledge & sign a banner, and opportunities to highlight the importance of inclusion in our school community.
School Social Worker Week: This week we take time to celebrate the work of our School Social Worker, Mr. Orlander Bullock. School Social Workers are a hard-working and humble group of professionals. They spend much of their work time advocating for others. Working alongside our teachers and school administrators, Mr. Bullock supports students and families by promoting positive change and eliminating barriers to student learning. He provides a critical link between the home, school, and community through support services that positively impact the development of the whole child. Mr. Bullock, we appreciate you and thank you for your commitment to our Durant Road MS students and families!
Congratulations to the nineteen outstanding 6th-grade students who will be inducted into the National Junior Beta Club on Wednesday, March 5, 2025! Durant Road Middle School is proud of your hard work, dedication, and commitment to academic excellence. We look forward to celebrating this special achievement with you. The induction ceremony will take place in the auditorium at 8:30 a.m., and we warmly welcome families and friends to join us in honoring our newest Beta Club members.
North Carolina Severe Weather Preparedness Week: March 5 - 11, 2023 We will participate in the statewide Tornado Drill on Friday, 03/07/25 at 9:30 AM.
Behavior Intervention Monitoring Assessment System-2 or BIMAS-2: We have been fortunate to be among the schools chosen to participate in the district’s Social, Emotional (SEL) Behavior Universal Screener. This is an excellent opportunity for our students and staff! To phase in the program, we will screen all students in grades 6th-8th in the coming weeks.
What is the SEL Behavior Universal Screener?
We’ll use the Behavior Intervention Monitoring Assessment System-2 or BIMAS-2 (pronounced BYE-mahs). This research-based screening tool will help identify students who are at risk of future academic, behavioral, or emotional difficulties. Just like some students benefit from additional academic support and interventions, we know some students would benefit from additional support to strengthen their behavioral, social, and emotional skills. The data generated from this screener will also help us determine district and school-wide programs, interventions, and staff training needs.
- Week of February 24, 2025: Teachers will distribute letters and opt-out forms to students who have enrolled since the fall BIMAS screening. Students whose parents previously opted out will remain exempt.
- Monday, March 10th -17th, 2025- Screening window.
6th & 7th Grade Dance: The 6th and 7th grade dance is coming up! Get ready to GLOW UP and SHOW UP on Friday, March 21st from 3:30pm-5:00pm. The dance costs $5 to attend and this helps to pay for pizza and decorations. Students must stay after school in order to attend the dance. Students may pay in cash every Tuesday and Wednesday leading up to the dance. The last day to pay is Wednesday, March 19th. See Ms. Pitts during arrival on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the top of the 7th grade hallway. Payment will not be accepted on any other days. Payment to the dance is non-refundable and students must be eligible to attend afterschool events in quarter 3. (No OSS assignments and no more than 2 days of ISS in quarter 3.) If students become ineligible after payment is made, there will be no refunds. Students will learn more during homeroom this week!

Reality of Money: On March 18, we will have a Reality of Money event sponsored by State Employees Credit Union. This event offers a financial simulation that provides students an opportunity to make financial decisions about paying for housing, transportation, and other monthly expenses as they are "transformed" into young adults with jobs and other responsibilities to manage. Students are exposed to various financial learning points such as the value of furthering their education, the importance of saving, the limiting effect of bad credit, and "living within their means". We will need 30 volunteers per session in order to provide this opportunity for our students. There are no requirements to volunteer. All volunteers will be provided with all of the training and materials needed. If you are willing to offer your time for one or both sessions, we would love to have you. Please review the session times and sign up here.
Grade Level Newsletters: Please review grade level newsletters as they include lots of great instructional information.
