DRMS' Principal Message
Happy beautiful Sunday Dolphins! This is Kristen Faircloth, proud principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your April 24, 2022 Family Message.
We hope everyone had a wonderful first week back at school and a strong start to Q4. While the week began with weather that would make us want to stay in the house, the end of the week was absolutely gorgeous!
Please take a minute to read through the Family Message below and do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or needs you may have. We are here to support you and your child with a positive school experience.
Q3 Report Cards: Q3 Report Cards were given to students on Friday, April 22. Along with the report card, students were given an EOG information letter for you to review, sign and return. We are looking to receive a letter back from every student.
End-of-Year State Testing: At the end of the school year, your child will participate in the regular administration of North Carolina End-of-Grade (EOG) tests , Reading, Math and Science 8. Students enrolled in Math 1 will participate in an End of Course (EOC) test and students in Math 2 will participate in a teacher-made assessment. Testing will follow this schedule. Students who score Level 3 or higher on these assessments are considered proficient.
Students who do not score a Level 3 or higher on the EOG and pass the course have an opportunity to participate in remediation and to retest (take the EOG a second time) on June 28th and June 29th .
Transportation will be provided, and breakfast and lunch will be available.
At this time, we are providing families with information about this opportunity. After students complete their EOGs, we will determine which students are eligible and notify those families of their child’s eligibility to retest.
Students received their Opt-In Letters for EOG Remediation and Retest with their Report Cards. If you would like to opt in to this opportunity, please complete the form and return it to your child's homeroom teacher. Virtual Academy families can return their letters to the school or email them to our test coordinator.
We look forward to supporting our virtual and in-person students with end-of-year standardized testing. NCDPI does not allow students to take these tests virtually. Students can only take these tests at school.
- June 3 - 8th Grade "Beach Bash" Dance from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Students are invited to stay after school for snacks and refreshments prior to the dance.
- June 23 - 6th and 7th grade student End of Year Celebrations
- June 24 - 8th grade Fun Day/Picnic
- June 27 - 8th grade End of Year Celebration
Panorama Parent Survey: Wake County Public Schools is administering a District-Wide Family Survey from Monday, April 4 through Friday, May 6 to learn more about you and your child’s experiences in our schools. This survey provides families with the opportunity to provide valuable information and a high-quality data source for planning and School Improvement. Your responses to this survey will be anonymous and only reported in combination with other responses. No one will be able to see individual responses from any parent or guardian.
If you have more than one child enrolled in the same school, please fill out one survey thinking about the experiences of your oldest student here at Durant Road Middle. Your honest feedback is essential as we work to create the district, school, and classroom environments that are most supportive for our students. Family Engagement Night: Whether your student is in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, high school is just around the corner. Please join us for an in-person Family Academy Event on Wednesday May 4, 2022 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm in the Learning Commons. We will talk about ways to prepare for life as a high school student and how to set ourselves up for success.
Locker Request for Quarter 4: Due to increased use of technology, utilization of class sets of books, and our allowance of students to carry backpacks from class to class, we will not be assigning lockers to all students during Q4. Throughout this school year, we have found not utilizing lockers to have many positive benefits for students, including an increase in instructional time, items/materials not being left in lockers that are needed during instruction, and support of positive student behavior in the hallways, etc.
Students needing a locker due to special circumstances (medical/health issues, equipment, etc.) should complete the following request below in order to receive one. Lockers will be assigned to individual students, as students will not be able to share lockers.
These lockers are made available for student use in storing school supplies and personal items necessary for use at school, but the lockers are not to be used to store items that may interfere with school purposes or are forbidden by school rules. The school retains the right to inspect the locker and its contents to ensure that the locker is being used in accordance with its intended purpose and to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.
Students will be assigned designated times to utilize their locker throughout the day. Also, students will not be able to get items from their lockers outside of these designated times. As always, students are expected to follow D.R.M.S. expectations at their lockers and during designated locker times.
Due to end-of-grade testing, students who request a locker will only be utilizing them from Monday, May 2, 2022, through Friday, June 3, 2022. Also, we want to emphasize that most high schools no longer use lockers as our 8th graders begin to reflect on their transition to 9th grade.
By submitting this request form, you acknowledge that you accept the guidelines above and understand that students must follow these expectations to have and maintain their locker privilege. ONLY PARENTS should submit this form.

DRMS Band Celebrations: Congratulations to all of the band students who went above and beyond to submit performances for the East Central District's Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment! The following students all scored a superior for their small ensemble:
6th graders Ethan and Caleb and 7th graders Abby, Alazia, Alex, Ben, Kali, Luis, Megan, Oscar, Owen, and Steven.
An extra congrats to Ethan P. and Caleb F. for making finals! They performed at the SEMPA Showcase on Saturday, April 23rd. Way to go!
Rising 7th Grade Immunizations: NC State Law mandates that all rising 7th-grade students have their TDAP and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines. Please return immunization records showing TDAP and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines by or before July 29th, 2022. Immunization records may be emailed to kbograd@wcpss.net. We appreciate your attention to this mandate.
