DRMS' Principal Message

Hello Dolphins!  This is Kristen Faircloth, proud principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your July 25, 2021 Family Message.

It is hard to believe we are starting the 2021-22 school year in one week, Monday, August 2, 2021!  We are so excited to welcome back our Dolphins!  We truly hope you have enjoyed time with family and friends this summer.  We know the transition back to school will be different this school year.  Please know, the DRMS staff is dedicated to supporting our students and families.  There will be a lot of information shared in the coming weeks so please be sure to read the Family Message.  Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have.  We are always here to help.

2021-22 Academies:  The DRMS staff are excited to invite our in-person Dolphins and one adult to campus prior to the first day of school for an Academy.  At the Academy, students will receive their 2021-22 schedule, participate in an orientation to their core classes, engage in team building with peers, meet their teachers and tour the school.  6th Grade Academy will take place on Tuesday, July 27th from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM, 7th Grade Academy will take place on Wednesday, July 28th from 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, and 8th Grade Academy on Wednesday, July 28th from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM.  Students and one adult should plan to stay the entire 3 hours.  Please see the grade level invitations following:

2021-22 Virtual Academy Orientation:  A virtual orientation will be held for all Virtual Academy students on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 2:00 PM.  Please be on the lookout for more information and a link to join the orientation the beginning of this week.

2021-22 School Year:

  • The first day of school for all students is Monday, August 2nd.
  • DRMS will follow the WCPSS year-round, track 4 schedule which can be found here.
  • DRMS Supply Lists can be found here.
  • School hours are 8:15 AM - 3:00 PM.
  • Students may start arriving on campus at 7:45 AM.

Student Device Program:  WCPSS is launching a new student device program for the 2021-22 school year.  All WCPSS students will be issued a Lenovo 300e Chromebook.  Some students received a Lenovo 300e Chromebook last year and will continue to use it.  Students with other models are being asked to bring their device and charger to school to exchange the device for the 300e model.  Students without a WCPSS device will receive one in the first few days of school.  The device will be fully supported by the district while personal devices will not.  Students and parents will be asked to sign an agreement that details the loan period, care, and requirements for taking part in the program.  More information will be provided to students at the beginning of the school year.

School Safety:  COVID-19 safety guidelines are still in place for the 2021-22 school year.  All students and staff will wear a mask that always covers the mouth and nose except when eating and drinking.  Students will be provided opportunities to wash their hands frequently.  Students should stay home if sick and let the school know if they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Immunizations:  NC State Law mandates that all rising 7th graders have their TDAP and Meningococcal vaccines.  Please return immunization records showing TDAP and Meningococcal vaccines by or before August 2, 2021.  Immunization records may be emailed to kanderson7@wcpss.net.

Thank you for supporting DRMS,

Kristen J Faircloth
