DRMS' Principal Message

Hello Dolphins!  This is Kristen Faircloth, principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your June 7, 2020 family message.

Thursday, June 11, 2020 is the last day of school for the 2019-2020 year!  I would like to commend our students, parents, and staff for persevering during these unprecedented times.  Together, we have achieved quite an accomplishment.  Let's commit to finishing the year strong as we move into the last week of school.  Final grades were posted and available to view in PowerSchool on Thursday, June 4, 2020.  Please communicate with your teachers any questions you may have.  With that said, teacher office hours will not take the last week of school.  Don't forget to continue to check the DRMS website for updated information throughout the summer.  Please carefully read the family message below with important information.

Close of School Procedures: Saturday, June 6, 2020 was an amazing day!  Students had the opportunity to clean out their lockers, pick up art work, pick up medications and drive through several stations (band, chorus, athletics, PTA-Day of Awesomeness Prizes, Yearbooks) to close out the 2019-2020 school year.  Our hearts were filled as we waved, cheered and gave social distancing hugs to all of our students.  We snapped some great pictures of our 8th graders wishing them well as they head to high school.  Be on the lookout for pictures on our social media.  A huge shout out to the DRMS PTA, Power of Purpose, Kona Ice and staff who volunteered and made the day so successful.

Any student who was unable to access the building on our previous “open” days, will have a final opportunity to retrieve any items left in their grade-level locker.

From Monday, June 15 through Wednesday, June 17 (9 AM to 4 PM), parents may park in the front parking lot (nearest the front office doors) in order to retrieve items from their student’s grade-level locker.  Please ring the doorbell, give the staff member your child’s name and a bag will be handed that contains any items left in the student’s grade-level locker.  Also, if students ordered a yearbook but were unable to pick it up on June 6, those will be available as well.

Please note, parents and students will not have access to the building, classrooms, lockers or any other areas of the school on these particular days and times.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT ATTENDING A WAKE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEXT YEAR…

If your child is not attending a WCPSS school for the 2020-2021 school year and you were supplied a chromebook and/or WiFi hotspot from the school, those must be returned

June 15-17, 2020.  Please stop by the school between the hours of 9 AM and 4 PM, drop off the technology materials and let the staff member know your child’s name.

Please note, this process is ONLY for students not attending a WCPSS school for next year.  If you are attending another WCPSS school (DRMS, high school, a different WCPSS middle school), students and parents should keep chromebooks and WiFi hotspots supplied from the school until further directions are provided.

If you have any specific questions or requests, please work with your child’s grade-level administrator from this school year.

End of Year Celebrations:  As this year comes to a close, we are excited to have an opportunity to celebrate the many accolades and accomplishments of our Durant Road Middle School Dolphins!  Our students have been resilient through the variety of learning and we could not imagine a better way to cap off this unique year than to recognize them in our End of Year Virtual Celebrations!

While students watched these celebrations with their teams on June 10 and 11, we are excited to offer recordings of these ceremonies for family members to view and celebrate the students’ many accomplishments.

Links to the specific grade-level celebrations will be available through team newsletters and the DRMS Parent School Messenger.

Out of respect and safety for all of our students, we ask parents and family members to please watch the ceremonies through the links provided and not post them on social media platforms.  Thank you so much for your consideration in this matter.

Attention Current 7th Grade Families: Mrs. Warren (7th grade school counselor) would really appreciate it if you would take just a few minutes to complete her school counseling survey as we wrap up this school year and move into next year. She will be moving up with your students to the 8th grade, and looks forward to continuing to support your child and family next year! Thanks in advance! Message from the DRMS PTA:  As the school year comes to a close in these very unusual circumstances, we would like to congratulate our students and staff on all their hard work. The PTA will have a virtual general meeting this month to approve an interim budget to help our school prepare for the new year - we will share details as soon as they are finalized.  Additionally, given current events, we want to take this opportunity to share the NCPTA President's statement on George Floyd as well as this informative article from Parents.com that might be helpful for parents in talking with their children about race. The PTA supports all children and families, and we will continue to gather resources on this important issue to share with our school community.  Best wishes to everyone for a safe, healthy and happy summer.

Thank you for being a positive member of the DRMS community,

Kristen Faircloth
