DRMS' Principal Message

Hello Dolphins!  This is Kristen Faircloth, principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your May 10, 2020 weekly family message.

We hope everyone has enjoyed this beautiful weekend and have taken time to celebrate all the Dolphin Mothers in the community.  Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing moms, aunts, grandmothers, teachers and other strong women that have such a positive impact on our students.  As we continue with week 4 of virtual learning at DRMS, we hope that your households stay balanced and healthy.  Please continue to support your child in completing academic tasks, take advantage of optional learning opportunities, and encourage them to communicate with teachers when questions arise.  We are all in this together!  This week, the district will provide families with updated grading information as we navigate the last month of school.  We wish you a wonderful week and please reach-out with any questions or concerns.

Building Access:  We were please to provide the opportunity for students to pick up items for continuous virtual learning as well as personal items on Saturday, May 9, 2020.  Thank you to everyone for following the health guidelines of social distancing and wearing masks.  It brought joy to our hearts to see so many smiling faces from a distance.  Saturday, June 6, 2020 has been designated for families to have access to the building, return WCPSS-owned items as well as pick up year books, etc.  Additional detailed information will be available in the coming weeks.

Medication Pick-Up:  If your student has medication at school, it can be picked up in Student Services on Saturday, June 6th (last names A-M from 1-2 pm; last names N-Z from 2-3 pm). Medication trained office staff will be available to assist you and social distancing precautions will be observed. If you are unable to pick up your student's medications on June 6, 2020, WCPSS Health Services is allowing us to hold medications at school due to COVID-19. No medications will be discarded and procedures for next school year will be shared with families as soon as they are made available to us.

Memorial Day Week Schedule:  Monday, May 25, 2020 is the Memorial Day holiday for WCPSS students and staff. We will not be conducting Virtual Learning on this day. DRMS will follow an amended schedule May 26-29 to ensure that all students have the opportunity to attend all classes and interact with all teachers. Grade level specific schedules will be sent to families in newsletters on May 22, 2020.

7th Grade Guest Speaker Opportunities:  We are excited to offer two upcoming guest speakers for all of our 7th grade Dolphins!  Any interested student should get the Google Meet link from their science teacher.

On Wednesday, May 13th from 2:00-3:00 p.m., the director of Carolina Tiger Rescue (based in Pittsboro, NC) will provide students with an inside look of their facility. The director will compare and contrast the human body systems to those of the tigers.

On Monday, May 18th from 2:00-3:00 p.m., a doctoral student will talk about her human anatomy and physiology research. She recently published a paper about how heart transplant patients recover. She will also provide students with information about how science and math are interconnected in understanding the human body.

Students will have the opportunity to ask questions during both opportunities. Please know that students are not required to attend these meetings nor do they have to stay the entire time. These are great opportunities for students to have interactions with professionals and these interactions may spark possible career interests!

Olympic Week:  Since this year was an Olympic year, we are bringing the Olympics to DRMS!  The Olympics are more than just the top athletes around the world competing in their respective disciplines.  The Olympics are about everyone coming together from around the world and unity.  The week of May 18, 2020 is Olympic Week at DRMS led by our elective team!  Check out this amazing video and get excited about the fun to come as we are all in this together:  https://youtu.be/_5LgFdjzXBk

PTA Message:  Thank you for showing our staff so much love during Staff Appreciation Week!  Your support means a lot - especially during this time when their contact with our kids is remote.

While we don’t quite know how the next school year will look, we are always in need of parent help and involvement so if you are interested in being on the PTA board or serving on any committees next year, please send a note to durantroadmiddlepta@gmail.com for more information on available opportunities. As always, thank you for supporting DRMS!

Continue to stay engaged and learning,
Kristen Faircloth
