DRMS' Principal Message

Hello, this is Kristen Faircloth, principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your February 9, 2020 weekend message.

We would like to thank everyone for their teamwork, flexibility, and understanding during the two hour early release on Thursday, February 6, 2020 and school closing on Friday, February 7, 2020.  Our Dolphins did a great job listening and following directions to ensure everyone received lunch and dismissed safely on Thursday.  Our hope is everyone stayed safe during the storms with very little or no damage.  The WCPSS will not be making up the missed day on Friday, February 7, 2020 due to using banked hours.

Bus Driver Appreciation Week:  February 10-14, 2020 is Bus Driver Appreciation Week!  It is no secret that we greatly appreciate our bus drivers each and every day.  The Board of Education's recent approval to significantly raise bus driver pay is a strong affirmation of this.  Bus drivers work hard to ensure that more than 70,000 students are delivered to and from school safely every day.  They are the first WCPSS employee our bus riders see in the morning and the last they see in the afternoon.  Everyone is invited and encouraged to share a kind word or even a Valentine's Day card with our bus drivers during "Love the Bus" week.

PTA Valentines:  The PTA is selling Valentine’s Day cand
y-grams every morning between 7:45 AM and 8:15 AM until Wednesday, Feb. 12. Students can buy heart-shaped suckers for their friends or teachers for $1 each and have the opportunity to write a note if they wish.  The treats will be distributed during homeroom February 14, 2020.  You can also buy candy-grams online here through our PTA MemberHub store. Treat your students and staff to something sweet for Valentine’s Day!

NCFC Literacy Challenge:  The NCFC "Reading Goals" literacy challenge comes to a close Friday, February 14, 2020.  Student reading logs were sent home in December.  You can obtain another copy here .  Students who read at least 250 minutes or more can earn free tickets to a NCFC or NC Courage soccer game.  The classroom that reads the most minutes could get a professional soccer player to come visit their grade level!

Board Advisory Council Meeting:  Everyone is welcome to attend the Board Advisory Council Meeting with our School Board Member, Roxie Cash.  The topic for the meeting is Social and Emotional Learning.  Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent in Student Support Services and Dr. Marrius Pettiford, Senior Director in Counseling and Student Services will be presenting.  The BAC meeting will take place on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 6:00 PM at North Ridge Elementary School.

Spring Pictures:  Spring pictures will be taken on Thursday, February 20, 2020 from 9:00 AM - 9:45 AM.  Only students who bring money will be photographed and no make-up pictures will be offered.

Millbrook High School:  Millbrook High School will be at Durant Road Middle School on February 13, 2020 for their annual outreach to prospective students for the 2020-2021 academic year.  Interested 8th grade students will have an opportunity to attend the presentation during Smart Block.

Thank you for supporting DRMS,
Kristen J Faircloth
