DRMS Principal's Message

Hello, this is Kristen Faircloth, principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your June 6, 2019 weekly message.

On Friday, June 6, 2019, a routine action took place at DRMS in the interest of student safety.  The Raleigh Police Department conducted a "K-9" safety exercise on campus today.  In such an exercise, officers use trained dogs to sweep our hallways and lockers.  All sixth, seventh, and eighth grade lockers, along with the girls' and boy's locker rooms, were searched.  The exercise lasted about 40 minutes.  I am happy to report that no illegal substances or objects were found during the search.  This was a routine exercise.  Our school is one of several to be visited for this purpose this year.  Schools are not contacted prior to the K-9 safety exercise.  Local law enforcement controls all details of the event.  We work closely with the law enforcement and our WCPSS security team to keep all campuses, students and staff safe.  We will continue to take every measure to ensure the safety and well-being of our students.

DRMS enjoyed celebrating our track 1 Dolphins as they ended their 2018-2019 school year on Tuesday, June 4, 2019.  Awards ceremonies took place on Friday, May 31, 2019 and Tuesday, June 4, 2019.  We also enjoyed the eighth grade dance on Friday, May 31, 2019 and the track 1 eighth grade picnic on Monday, June 3, 2019.  Congratulations to all of our track 1 Dolphins on a successful school year and the best of luck to our eighth grade students as they move on to high school.

We welcomed our track 2 Dolphins back from a well deserved track out on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.  We are looking forward to finishing the 2018-2019 school year strong during these last three weeks with tracks 2, 3 and 4.

We are very excited to announce and introduce our new band director, Ms. Casey Duryea!  Ms. Duryea has been the band director at East Wake Middle School for six years and knows that there is nothing she wants to do more than teach middle school band!  She loves the amount of progress hard-working middle schoolers can make in only three years.  Ms. Duryea is passionate for challenging students to be the best they can be - not only as musicians, but as responsible and respectful young adults.  We have scheduled a "Meet and Greet" on Thursday, June 13, 2019 between 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM in the Learning Commons (media center).  Any current and future band families are welcome to stop in and meet Ms. Duryea.

DRMS' administrative team and community will have some "extra hands" starting on Thursday, June 13, 2019.  Ms. Dail Midgette will be completing some administrative internship hours from June 13, 2019 through June 28, 2019.  Please help us welcome Ms. Midgette to the Durant Family.

EOGs, EOCs and NCFEs for learners on tracks 2, 3 and 4 will begin on Monday, June 17, 2019.  Please continue to encourage your child to give 100% right up until the end of the school year.

Thank you for supporting DRMS,

Kristen Faircloth
